Chapter 53: Just to Accompany Me

***

Speaking of etiquette lessons.

These days’ courses were originally designed as an intensive hell training specifically customized for Lavendia alone.

The reason why the courses were so demanding was to transform Lavendia as quickly as possible, in the shortest time, to adapt to her new noble identity.

As for Claire, she was already a young lady, raised by the Duke according to the highest standards as a “perfect noble” since childhood.

All those noble etiquette, sitting and standing postures, table manners — in the original story, Claire had started learning them as soon as she learned to walk.

Given how strict the Duke was in educating children, perhaps little Claire’s first word wasn’t “father” but their surname “Grendel.”

Growing up constantly hearing “you must always remember your status and not disgrace the Grendel name,” she really didn’t need to learn from scratch at this point.

Therefore, just because Claire talked back at the dining table, the Duke actually made her attend etiquette lessons from the beginning along with Lavendia…

This was almost equivalent to telling an English major student: “Go back and relearn the 26 English letters from scratch”, it was practically an insult.

Logically speaking, being treated this way by her father, Claire should have declined, resisted, refused, and then had an emotional outburst, throwing a big tantrum.

However, the reality was that Claire accepted it without crying or making a fuss, and had been obediently attending classes these past few days.

Even Lavendia was somewhat curious, while the etiquette lessons were meant as a punishment for her, why was Claire’s emotional state so much more stable compared to the rumors?

Lavendia decided to ask.

“Lady Sophia said that Duke Grendel is very busy and won’t be at the mansion these days.”

She said: “Young Lady Claire, if you don’t want to attend etiquette lessons, no one will force you to go.”

But Claire shook her head and casually replied: “I quite want to attend.”

Lavendia unusually asked another question.

“Why?”

Hmm.

Even if you ask me why…

Claire thought helplessly, if she were to tell the truth, there were many reasons.

First, of course, was wanting to find more opportunities to get close to sister— (oh no, scratch that, system don’t shock me.)

First of all, the etiquette lessons were quite necessary for Claire.

After all, being the perfect noble young lady who grew up under strict requirements, constantly exhausting herself mentally just to gain her father’s approval, to the point of being somewhat pitiful—

That was the villainess Claire from the original story, what did it have to do with me, the new Claire?

If she didn’t properly train her sitting and standing postures, people might soon start gossiping: “Why is Young Lady Claire suddenly hunching?” “How did Young Lady Claire forget which hand holds the knife and which holds the fork?” “Is Young Lady Claire alright?”… and such.

At this time, the Duke making her relearn everything actually suited Claire’s needs perfectly.

Moreover—

Sigh, there were still system tasks to complete.

Life isn’t easy, Claire sighed.

Might as well just attend the classes, complete the tasks, and try to survive in whatever way possible.

But having to wake up at 4 AM every day, with the script completely forgotten, and a future full of uncertainty.

In this cold world, perhaps only sister’s warmth retained a hint of temperature—

“Young Lady Claire?”

Lavendia asked softly: “…You haven’t fallen asleep again, have you?”

“I really haven’t this time! — No, I wasn’t asleep earlier either!”

Lavendia slightly narrowed her eyes: “…So, are you not going to answer?”

“Hmph, what’s there that I can’t answer?”

Claire put her hands on her hips, adjusted her tone, and proudly lifted her chin.

She said: “Accompanying you isn’t anything special. I just need to personally demonstrate to you what true noble grace really means!”

Lavendia was slightly stunned.

“You mean… you’re doing this to accompany me?”

“What else? Of course I’m accompanying you—”

Claire’s voice grew quieter.

She fell silent for a few seconds, then suddenly began robotically reciting the system’s words.

“Ahem, but don’t take yourself too seriously. Calling you sister is giving you face, don’t get full of yourself, you’re still a hundred years too early to try to replace my position—”

She recited dryly while blinking hard.

At first glance it looked like she was sleepy, but actually it was a case of “blink if you’re being held hostage by the system.”

Though she knew Lavendia wouldn’t understand anyway, ugh.

Life isn’t easy, Claire sighed.

On the morning terrace, rain pattered softly on the eaves.

The sun hid behind clouds, unclear but still gradually brightening the sky.

The world seemed very quiet.

Claire’s expression looked quite reluctant, her face slightly flushed.

Lavendia was lost in thought.

Is she… lying?

Perhaps her true purpose is to interfere with me, deliberately creating obstacles to prevent me from properly attending etiquette lessons… just using “accompaniment” as an excuse?

Perhaps she’s just hiding her hostility too well…

Perhaps she’s just waiting, looking for the best opportunity to make her move?

Just to accompany me, how could that be possible?

Young Lady Claire appears to be quite skilled at lying.

After all, Lavendia had always been alone.

No warmth, no companions, barely even a moment’s rest.

And she had never heard anyone use the word accompaniment with her…

Accompaniment…

Claire seemed to be saying something else, but Lavendia wasn’t listening anymore.

She just stood silently, gently raising one hand to cover the left side of her chest.

Her heartbeat seemed to have become somewhat noisy.

—————

Claire still didn’t go back to her room to sleep.

Even though Lavendia told her: “You can go sleep first, I’ll help explain to Miss Aurora.”

Which moved Claire deeply.

How to describe it…

It was a bit like a college roommate voluntarily telling you “no worries bro, I’ll answer for you if there’s roll call next class.”

Touching, wanting to sleep.

But if she really went back, she felt the system would definitely nag endlessly.

About deviating from the plot, about the host not being diligent enough, so annoying.

Claire had just doubted the system earlier, and now she didn’t want to talk to it much, so she decided against it.

At least during etiquette lessons when Aurora was present, the system would switch to silent mode, which Claire found more peaceful.

The two came to the dining table for breakfast.

Claire sleepily propped up her chin.

She was really too tired, the bread seemed tasteless in her mouth.

…Oh, this whole wheat bread was probably just tasteless to begin with, why couldn’t they add some jam…

Ugh, not tasty.

The more she chewed, the more wronged she felt.

Lavendia sat across the dining table, quietly observing Claire’s little expressions while drinking black tea.

She once again pushed her portion of milk pudding towards Claire.

Claire made a tearful expression, took a big bite, and her eyes brightened after eating the sweet.

Lavendia hesitated for a moment, but still spoke up:

“Young Lady Claire, if your body can’t handle it… don’t force yourself.”

However, Lavendia wasn’t the type to often care for others, so although she said these words, they somehow felt awkward.

The maid Anna was pouring black tea for Claire, and upon hearing Lavendia speak, looked up and glared at her fiercely.

…Oh?

So this is where the undisguised hostility lies.

Lavendia straightened her back, showing no sign of backing down, her gaze cold and sharp, calmly meeting that look head-on.

It seems she can’t completely let her guard down.

The banquet was approaching.
