Chapter 52: So Sleepy, Really So Sleepy
***
A new day, a new 4 AM.
Only 2 days left until the important banquet.
Claire weakly crawled out of bed, her eyes unfocused, face blank, her golden hair as messy as a bird’s nest.
This won’t do, she felt her mental state was in dire straits.
The night before, she had stayed up late anxious about the system’s matters, and after getting only a few hours of sleep, it was time to get up again.
Why.
Must we.
Get up.
So early!!
Claire was breaking down inside, wanting to punch the system to pieces, but she couldn’t act out externally, which made her feel even worse.
She was too sleepy to open her eyes, feeling like she had become a soft and squishy slime in her dreams…
The kind that “becomes soft and comfortable after being violently kneaded and repeatedly crushed by life.”
The maid helped Claire wipe her face.
Her head kept nodding off, unconsciously munching on refreshing mint leaves as she sluggishly got out of bed and barely managed to sit at the dressing table.
The mirror reflected Claire’s face.
A delicate face carved from jade, now pale and lackluster.
After pulling an all-nighter, there were even red blood vessels in her eyes. Under her refined eyelids hung two large dark circles…
She looked quite haggard.
Head maid Anna watched this, took up a comb to help Claire brush her hair, frowning and silent, as if holding something back.
In her half-asleep state, Claire felt today seemed quieter than the previous two days.
Oh… it’s because Anna had finally become more composed.
Today she wasn’t shouting like before about “Young Lady, let’s do something to make that wench behave,” which was nice.
The whole world felt more peaceful, perfect for catching up on sleep.
Claire changed clothes half-asleep.
Walked down the hallway half-asleep.
Greeted Lavendia half-asleep, and as usual went with her to the terrace.
“…Young Lady, careful.”
Lavendia suddenly grabbed Claire’s arm, pulling her back just in time.
She had nearly crashed headfirst into a large decorative vase in the hallway.
“Heh, hehe.”
Claire dazedly blinked, slowly lifted her head, and gave Lavendia a smile.
“Thank you, Sister…”
System: 『…』
System: 『No, host, this is not, no.』
What do you mean no.
What right does a system like you have to say anything, haven’t you seen humans about to die from exhaustion before?
This is what happens when you don’t get enough sleep, not to mention the exhausting daily etiquette lessons…
Claire felt that if she maintained this schedule for a few more days, she would probably evaporate on the spot.
Too tired to deal with the system, she continued trying to catch up on sleep.
Lavendia worriedly released her arm, watching as Claire continued walking forward half-asleep.
She wasn’t even walking in a straight line…
And that silly smile, really now.
This Young Lady, did she not sleep at all last night?
Lavendia shook her head helplessly and followed behind Claire.
She raised one arm, hovering it protectively behind Claire the whole way, preventing her from falling or bumping into anything else.
It was another rainy day.
Dark clouds pressed down with humid air, the crystal ball reflecting abundant water element particles.
Claire started training first.
She held the crystal ball, lowered her head, and closed her eyes.
The morning breeze carrying rain brushed against her cheeks, cool and comfortable.
Very comfortable, perfect for… sleeping…
Claire quickly immersed herself in training (sleep).
Meanwhile Lavendia stood beside her, gazing far into the distant mountains shrouded in mist.
She had been reviewing etiquette lessons in the garden last night and also went to bed late.
But Lavendia’s body was long accustomed to light sleep, just like a cat, only needing occasional short naps to quickly recover her energy.
With the morning wind blowing like this, she felt completely awake, clear-headed and refreshed.
Unfortunately, such humid rainy weather didn’t seem very suitable for practicing fire magic perception… and that ability that seemed to pause time was also difficult to find the knack for practicing.
Such a nice morning, yet training showed no progress, it felt somewhat wasteful.
Lavendia thought for a while, suddenly remembering the high-intensity physical training arranged in dance class.
Why not take advantage of the good morning condition to go run a few laps?
Or do some stretching exercises, physical training would be good for building stamina too.
There were still many things that could be done.
Just as Lavendia was considering how to make a training plan for herself, on the other side—
Claire’s eyelids were becoming heavier and heavier, her breathing becoming more and more even.
Ah, the wonderful dreamland, like an invisible large net, was absorbing her consciousness…
Ugh, so sleepy, can’t go on…
Her eyelids were completely, unable to lift anymore…
Claire’s head slowly drooped.
Her fingers holding the crystal ball also unknowingly, gradually lost their strength.
“…!”
Lavendia turned her gaze back to Claire’s direction at that instant.
It was as if breathing stopped in that moment.
— She saw it.
Claire’s eyelashes trembled lightly, probably fighting against sleepiness, yet looking like a butterfly gently fluttering its wings among flowers.
The crystal ball, refracting semi-transparent light, was sliding from her fingertips like slow motion, inch by inch, frame by frame—
Lavendia held her breath, reached out her hand, and could easily catch that crystal ball.
The rain also seemed to pause in mid-air… in that instant, even the trajectory of water droplets seemed crystal clear down to the finest detail.
Just in that less than one second of time.
This time, the triggering scene was almost completely identical to the first time.
Same terrace, morning, Claire almost knocking over the magic crystal ball.
The difference was, this time, Lavendia firmly remembered this feeling.
“Ah…!”
Claire was startled awake.
Lavendia had somehow appeared in front of her, one hand supporting the terrace railing, the other hand helping her catch the crystal ball.
Then— steadily placed it back on its base.
Claire blankly blinked her eyes.
In Lavendia’s light purple eyes, there seemed to be some complex emotions.
She tilted her head, leaned closer to Claire, and Claire instinctively shrunk back a bit.
“Young Lady, just now—”
“Just now what?”
Lavendia asked softly: “Just now… did you fall asleep?”
Claire hurriedly shook her head: “No, no! How could that be possible? Who would suddenly fall asleep while standing? That would be so undignified!”
Lavendia fell silent, staring at Claire with scrutinizing eyes for a while.
Claire fought against sleepiness, dizzy and lightheaded, yet still had to raise her voice under the system’s urging.
“What, what are you looking at? I was just immersed in practice earlier, too focused that’s all!”
“You just have quick reactions and are thoughtful and caring, don’t think I’ll thank you!”
Due to lack of sleep, Claire’s voice was still a bit hoarse.
When she raised her pitch, it almost cracked. Like a small animal putting on a brave front.
The content of what she said was also unclear whether she was scolding or praising, her aggressiveness completely reduced to zero.
Sigh.
It seems Young Lady Claire is particularly out of sorts today.
Looking at those pitiful dark circles, Claire had completely turned into a dejected little panda baby.
Why dejected? Probably because she was too sleepy.
It seems she really didn’t rest well last night.
Lavendia withdrew her scrutinizing gaze and laughed lightly.
She said: “If you’re not feeling well, would you like to go back and sleep for a while?”
Claire was taken aback: “…Is that allowed?”
Lavendia’s smile became more apparent: “Of course it is, you are Young Lady Claire after all. Who would dare criticize you?”
“But.”
Claire lowered her head: “I need to attend etiquette class with Sister…”
