Chapter 41: There’s No Such Rain Afterstory
***
Making the rain… stop in midair?
Lavendia heard Claire’s words and looked up at the sky.
The fine rain fell continuously, with cool moisture in the air.
This terrace had an arched eave that could block wind and rain, as long as one stood under it, they wouldn’t get wet.
The rain fell from the eaves in strings, like crystalline beaded curtains.
Lavendia raised her slender arm, extending it beyond the eave to feel the rain falling on her fingertips.
Hmm, first, let’s try to concentrate.
Feel the rain, feel the water elements…
Lavendia closed her eyes, letting the raindrops gather into a small pool in her palm.
Then, the water slid down her fingertips and wrists, cold and damp, leaving thin traces of water along the way…
Lavendia tried to recall her previous sensation, becoming quiet for a moment.
Claire watched from the side, unconsciously holding her breath as well.
After about 30 seconds, the System couldn’t hold back anymore and asked:『Host, why are you making the number 8 gesture with your hands?』
Claire furrowed her brows: “What number 8?”
『Could it be two checkmarks?』
“Silly, I’m taking a photo with my fingers! If you don’t even understand this, you need several more version updates.”
Claire positioned her index fingers and thumbs of both hands opposite each other to form a frame-like square, capturing Lavendia, who was practicing with closed eyes, within it.
Then she closed one eye and looked at Lavendia through the finger frame with the other, her expression serious, as if she were truly a photographer admiring a model through a camera lens.
The System fell silent for a moment: 『Fine, so why is the host taking photos of the female protagonist?』
“Oh, you misunderstand, I’m photographing the rainy scenery, Lavendia just happened to be in it, mm-hmm.”
“Look how big this terrace is, how white this crystal ball is, how elegant this rain is.”
“What’s wrong with me spontaneously making some small gestures? It’s not interfering with the mission progress!”
System: 『…』
That’s right, I’m photographing the scenery.
I absolutely didn’t think that big sister holding her coat with one hand and reaching out to catch raindrops with the other was incredibly elegant and beautiful like a painting.
And I definitely wasn’t thinking of making it into CG art for a computer background or anything like that, absolutely not.
System: 『(눈_눈)… You better not be.』
A moment later, Lavendia slowly opened her eyes.
She seemed to have made no progress, just shaking her head slightly.
Just as Claire was about to say something, she saw Lavendia withdraw her arm and take out a handkerchief from the inner pocket of her coat, wiping her hands while lowering her head in thought.
In Claire’s finger frame, Lavendia lowered her gaze, her eyelashes long and delicate, thoughtfully looking at her wet right hand.
Her left hand held the handkerchief, wiping methodically, one stroke at a time.
First, she wiped away the water traces that gently meandered down her fair, smooth wrist… Claire suddenly blushed, her gaze becoming fixed.
Sometimes people’s ability to associate things is really, really.
Really indescribable.
Lavendia hadn’t noticed Claire’s gaze, just immersed in her own thoughts.
…Hmm, although I sensed the abundant water elements just now, and could see them too, I didn’t feel like I could control them.
And somehow, that momentary pause feeling from last time seems different from simply controlling elements…
What exactly is the difference?
Her wrist was now dry.
Lavendia then spread out her wet palm, using her left thumb to stretch the handkerchief fabric, applying some force to press, knead, and wipe.
As her train of thought hit a bottleneck, her hand-wiping motions took on a somewhat forceful quality.
…Control…
Control?
Ah yes, somehow that didn’t feel like control.
It should be temporarily changing some kind of rule…
Or perhaps, it was my reaction speed that increased, rather than Claire’s falling motion itself becoming slower.
So should the training focus be on reaction speed…?
Or is it that this skill can only be triggered in more urgent moments?
Lavendia’s brows furrowed tightly, as if somewhat disgusted by this wet rain.
She unfolded the handkerchief and began slowly and meticulously wiping her damp fingers one by one.
Starting with her delicate pinky, she wiped each knuckle, her neatly trimmed rounded nails gleaming slightly from the rain’s moisture.
When wiping her long middle and index fingers, they suddenly curled slightly, catching the handkerchief between them.
The rainwater remaining on her finger joints soaked through the handkerchief, spreading a dark water stain on the white fabric.
Lavendia suddenly understood.
…I see.
Rather than focusing on feeling, should I try to “observe”?
Should I focus on watching the rain’s movement path, imagining myself intervening to intercept it midway…?
This is it!
Lavendia suddenly raised her head, startling Claire who was caught off guard and couldn’t hide her expression in time, making eye contact for a second.
The look of sudden realization in Lavendia’s eyes was immediately replaced by confusion.
“…Claire, are you really alright?”
“Your face, why does it seem even redder than before?”
—————
Afterward, Lavendia tried several more times, but seemed to achieve no good results.
Because she had been staring at the rain screen so long, her eye sockets were starting to feel sore.
Lavendia had to temporarily come to a conclusion.
Practice related to time-stopping apparently couldn’t be figured out so simply, and couldn’t be rushed.
Additionally, Claire’s condition was also concerning.
Lavendia was really worried about her, so she kept getting distracted.
After all, from their first meeting this morning, the young lady had been in such a dazed state, anyone would be worried seeing that.
Is she really okay?
Could she have caught a cold from yesterday’s bath…
Speaking of which, I got angry at her last night and wanted to apologize.
I got too caught up in practicing.
In the corridor, Lavendia watched the young girl’s back ahead of her.
Claire walked forward in her high-heeled shoes, going tap-tap, head down. Her fluffy skirt and golden hair tips bounced with each step, like a cream cake trying to run away.
Lavendia suddenly curved her lips in a silent smile.
…But this is Young Lady Claire after all, how could she run away?
Hands on hips demanding, “Why are you so slow at practicing, you really can’t compare to even one or two tenths of my talent!” would be more like it.
She’s probably just hungry and rushing to eat milk pudding.
Thinking this, Lavendia adjusted the coat draped over her shoulders and quickened her pace as well.
However, only Claire knew that she really was running away.
Though not out of fear, but rather from unspeakable shyness and nervousness.
She couldn’t help it, she didn’t know why her heart was beating so fast either.
She only knew that if she didn’t run away quickly, she would really slip and fall into big sister’s arms.
Beauty is dangerous, beauty is dangerous, Claire… must resist!
Can only admire from afar, can’t get hands-on!
If she really hugged her, it would surely feel blissful for a moment, but what if the favorability rating dropped to a historic low, what then!
Claire’s little face was bright red, her whole body uncomfortable from holding back.
From behind, Lavendia suddenly spoke leisurely: “Young Lady, the air is humid on rainy days and the ground is bound to be slippery. Even if you’re in a hurry to eat, please be careful not to slip.”
…If she didn’t know Lavendia’s personality, and didn’t know the favorability rating was still negative, Claire would have almost thought this was some kind of seduction!
You don’t know how hard I’m trying not to slip, damn it…!
