Chapter 37: An Uninvited Entry Into Her Life

***

Night fell, and the moon rose above the willow branches.

Lavendia finished her bath and returned alone to her room.

She declined help from Sophia and other maids, sitting quietly by herself at the desk, using an ordinary towel to slowly dry her wet hair.

In the deep of night, the room was silent.

Only the rustling sound of the towel against her hair could be heard, along with water drops falling from her hair tips, quietly landing on the desk surface.

“Drip.”

Such tranquility always made Lavendia feel safe.

On her desk sat an exquisite small night lamp containing glowing magic stone fragments, its light warmer and softer than the wall lamps in the hallway.

Lavendia slowly dried her hair while gazing absently at the small night lamp.

Before coming here, she never knew such lighting tools existed in this world.

Whether it was the merchants in the underground city or the children at the orphanage… everyone used candles or oil lamps for lighting.

Candles burned quickly, and oil for lamps was expensive, so people had to use them sparingly. Common folk thus became accustomed to rising with the sun and resting at sunset.

But Lavendia was different, she rarely had peaceful nights or could sleep soundly until dawn.

In the underground streets, she always had to guard against ill-intentioned people breaking in, so she slept with a dagger in hand.

And at the orphanage, after the children fell asleep was the perfect time for investigation. Lavendia would often walk alone in the night, searching for ways to escape the orphanage or clues that could expose the adults’ crimes.

On those nights, only moonlight would light her way.

…

Ah, moonlight.

Lavendia lifted her head, quietly gazing out the window.

Carved window frames, spotless glass.

She raised her hand, pushed open the window, letting the cool evening breeze into the room.

Slowly inhaling, exhaling.

At peace.

No longer the iron-wire-meshed skylight of the orphanage, like a prison…

The air flowing in was no longer the thick, oppressive atmosphere of the underground streets from before.

Everything around her was reminding her that she was now in a world completely different from her past.

Lavendia was already trying her best to get used to it, trying to adapt, but she still needed some time.

Fortunately, even though time and space might change, people might change, the past might become distant, and the future uncertain, at least the moon remained the moon.

Whether in the slums, underground city, orphanage, or now in this noble mansion, she had always gazed up at the same moon.

Some things never change…

Lavendia continued slowly drying her hair while quietly thinking, organizing her countless thoughts.

Fire magic, unknown time-stopping ability.

And during dance class, Aurora said she might be suitable to become a swordswoman… huh?

She had never imagined she would have so many possibilities.

Currently unsure which path would suit her best, perhaps she could only try her best at everything before her.

Next week’s noble banquet at the Aldrich family was currently the top priority.

After all, all the notable nobles would be present, making it the best opportunity to investigate that badge, a rare lead.

She should focus on etiquette and dance classes first.

…At this thought, Lavendia’s mind couldn’t help but conjure up the image of a certain blonde twin-tailed young lady.

Claire would sometimes smile mischievously, revealing a barely visible little fang, and other times pretend to be on the verge of tears, looking at her with puppy-dog eyes.

…Sigh.

She had lost her temper with her today.

As Lavendia calmed down and reflected on her actions, she suddenly felt somewhat apologetic.

Was this really okay?

Thinking carefully, Claire hadn’t really done anything too terrible…

This was to prevent her judgment from being constantly influenced by Claire.

She should just maintain an appropriate distance going forward, no need to be too cold or too harsh towards her…

Besides, if she truly angered Claire and made her seriously start targeting her, that would only make things more troublesome.

…

This kind of ambiguous feeling, this hesitant state, really wasn’t like her at all.

Maybe she should apologize to her tomorrow.

Without realizing it, Lavendia’s hand had stopped drying her hair.

She became aware once again that just thinking about Claire made her state become strange, and she couldn’t help but let out a soft sigh.

The night breeze remained cool, bringing in moonlight like water, casting a floor full of silent silver radiance.

Lavendia stood up and picked up the suitcase beside her.

She would try on the formal dress for tomorrow’s etiquette class, then rest early.

After experiencing such intense physical training during dance class, and the emotional ups and downs from repeatedly dealing with Claire…

Even she would feel somewhat tired.

“Creak—”

The suitcase opened with a sound.

A bouquet of perfectly blooming roses quietly appeared in Lavendia’s view.

The red roses were as brilliant as fire, the pink roses were delicately tender, and the white roses, though surrounded in the middle, appeared even more fresh and otherworldly.

Even after being stuffed in the suitcase for a while, they still bloomed beautifully and passionately.

Lavendia froze for several seconds, then took out the bouquet.

She felt somewhat at a loss, gently touching the petals with her fingertips.

Such softness and delicacy made her unconsciously hold her breath.

…She had already said it wasn’t necessary.

Had already said she didn’t like them.

Why did you still give them to me?

Claire…

Lavendia was momentarily filled with mixed emotions.

She tucked the loose hair at her temples behind her ear, lowered her fine eyelashes, bowed her head, and lightly inhaled the scent of the rose bouquet.

The lamplight flickered, the petals disturbed by her breath gently swayed.

Even the night breeze carried a heart-refreshing fragrance.

This moment, this scene, so quiet, so elegant, breathtakingly beautiful, would be perfect for a painting.

But if Claire were present, she would probably be shocked beyond belief, her pupils quaking.

Because the “Lavendia Smelling Roses” CG was supposed to appear much later in the original game’s storyline.

This bouquet should have been given by one of the male leads to increase Lavendia’s favorability rating later on, but here, it had become Claire’s gift instead.

This indicated that the story had actually begun moving in a direction completely different from the original. However, no one could say clearly exactly which point it had begun to deviate from.

Yet at this moment, neither of the two protagonists could know…

“Ding-ling, ding-ling—”

Lavendia picked up the small bell beside her bed and tried ringing it.

Two minutes later, someone politely knocked lightly on the room door; it was Sophia.

“Young Lady Lavendia, is there anything you need?”

“Hmm…”

Lavendia hesitated for a few seconds, but still made up her mind and said: “Could you prepare a vase for me?”

“Of course.”

Sophia didn’t raise any questions, gave a curtsy, and left.

Moments later, an exquisite glass vase appeared on Lavendia’s windowsill.

Before this, Lavendia’s room had nothing special about it.

Plain colored curtains, plain colored carpet, black and white walls, an empty suitcase beside the bed… that was all.

After all, when Lavendia came to the mansion, she had almost no luggage. Her suitcase contained nothing but a few plain clothes, some daggers and other weapons for self-defense, nothing more.

Originally everything was so solemn, quiet, and orderly.

No unnecessary ornate decorations, no noisy colorful hues, not even anything extra.

Just like Lavendia’s life up until now.

But now, this ordinary room was suddenly lit up by a bouquet of iridescent roses.

So lively, so brilliant, so full of vitality.

So unreasonably, arbitrarily barging in through the window bathed in silver moonlight…

Lavendia stood by the window, looking at the roses, and suddenly smiled helplessly.

Including that nonsensical wrench tied with a ribbon, her first and second gifts had now both come from Claire.

This really was…

Completely unreasonable.
