- Chapter 16 - This Is Called a "Mask"
When Tang Yu and Shi Yunyi returned, they each held a rectangular piece of fabric. The fabric was soft, with a simple, elegant color. What stood out the most was that two thin strings were carefully sewn onto both sides.
“Senior brother, what is this? I can’t figure it out,” Ling Yan asked, looking confused.
Shi Yunyi also had no idea. He only knew that after Tang Yu returned to the room, he rummaged through drawers and boxes until he finally found a sewing kit. Then, without hesitation, he cut up a brand-new, unworn piece of clothing and started working tirelessly, eventually creating this strange-looking object.
“Come here, junior brother Ling! Let me put it on you and show you!” Without waiting for a response, Tang Yu grabbed Ling Yan and pulled him inside the house.
At the doorway, as if remembering something important, Tang Yu turned back and instructed Shi Yunyi, “Little junior brother, stay outside for now. Don’t come in!” There was a mysterious tone in his voice.
Before long, Tang Yu walked out with Ling Yan, smiling brightly.
Ling Yan now wore the rectangular cloth over his face. It perfectly covered the scars on his cheeks, and the thin strings tied securely behind his head kept it in place. With this, Ling Yan looked far less disheveled and even had a unique air about him.
“Doesn’t this look much better? Not only does it hide your injuries, but it’s also far more convenient than that bulky bamboo hat!” Tang Yu admired his handiwork with pride, his eyes full of joy.
Seeing this, Shi Yunyi couldn’t help but chuckle and agree, “Indeed! Senior brother, you’re quite skilled with your hands.”
Ling Yan touched the fabric covering his face, still confused. “What exactly is this?”
Tang Yu’s lips curled into a bright smile as he answered, “This is called a mask! I used to wear one for years, it almost became a necessity in my life!”
Hearing this, Shi Yunyi looked puzzled, as if giant question marks had appeared above his head. Ling Yan had the same expression, clearly unfamiliar with the term.
Seeing their confusion, Tang Yu quickly changed the subject. “Ah, don’t worry about it. Just wear it for now. Anyway, why don’t we go help our little junior brother this afternoon?”
As soon as Tang Yu finished speaking, Shi Yunyi and Ling Yan both nodded in agreement.
That afternoon, a new batch of disciples was set to arrive. These new disciples had passed rigorous selection tests. They were all of suitable age, consisting of both boys and girls, and each of them had great potential.
When the afternoon sun shone down, the three of them arrived at the designated location. Ye Wuchen was already waiting there.
As they approached, Ye Wuchen greeted them politely. When he looked at Shi Yunyi, he simply nodded in acknowledgment. But when his gaze landed on Tang Yu, a flash of obvious disdain flickered in his eyes.
Tang Yu immediately noticed Ye Wuchen’s unfriendly expression. A wave of irritation surged in his heart, but he kept his composure, only furrowing his brow slightly.
‘What’s his problem? Do we even know each other? Why does he look like he hates me?’
“Am I imagining things?” Tang Yu muttered under his breath.
System: [Nope~]
Tang Yu, “???”
The system, Pao Xiaohui, always popped up mysteriously to say random things. Tang Yu was already used to it.
Pao Xiaohui claimed to be socially anxious, which explained his cryptic way of speaking. Tang Yu couldn’t be bothered to argue with him. But judging by the situation, it was clear that Ye Wuchen and the original owner of this body had some kind of unresolved conflict.
At that moment, Ye Wuchen spoke coldly, “Tang Yu, the elder specifically said that you and Ling Yan don’t need to assist with the new disciples. Why are you so eager now? Afraid people won’t notice you playing hero?”
His tone was completely different from when he greeted Shi Yunyi. Tang Yu looked at Ye Wuchen’s arrogant, self-important attitude and felt annoyed.
However, he kept his face calm and replied evenly, “Senior brother Ye, you’re overthinking it! I’m just here because I had nothing else to do and wanted to join in the fun. Maybe lend a hand if needed. I’d never try to steal your spotlight.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Tang Yu’s lips curved into a subtle, unreadable smile, one that hinted at hidden mischief. Ye Wuchen’s face twitched slightly, his displeasure obvious to anyone watching.
He shot Tang Yu a glare before turning on his heel and striding toward the new disciples without looking back.
Watching Ye Wuchen’s reaction, Tang Yu secretly felt triumphant. He had no idea why Ye Wuchen disliked him, but seeing him frustrated was oddly satisfying.
‘I won’t provoke others, but if someone comes at me, should I just endure it?’
Tang Yu thought to himself. If Ye Wuchen wanted to start something, then Tang Yu wouldn’t hold back. Quickly, Tang Yu caught up to Ye Wuchen and blocked his path, wearing a smirk that practically invited a punch.
Then, in a deliberately exaggerated, playful voice, he said, “Ohhh, senior brother Ye, why are you walking so fast? Poor me, my injuries just healed! My body is still weak, you know. Be nice and slow down for me, okay?”
As he spoke, Tang Yu dramatically clutched his chest, furrowing his brows as if he might faint at any moment. His strong, steady steps instantly became wobbly, making him look like a flickering candle in the wind, about to go out.
Ye Wuchen’s expression darkened instantly. He let out a cold snort, picked up his pace instead of slowing down, and sneered, “Hmph, what a useless weakling. Just a minor injury and you can’t even walk properly? If you’re that fragile, why bother showing off here? Why not crawl back to your little hole and stop embarrassing yourself?”
Shi Yunyi and Ling Yan, who had been following behind, witnessed the entire scene.
Ling Yan sighed and shook his head, muttering, “Sigh… Why does senior brother Ye always have such a grudge against senior brother Tang? They’re always at each other’s throats…”
Meanwhile, Shi Yunyi remained silent, simply watching Tang Yu’s slightly disheveled figure. A faint, unreadable smile played at the corner of his lips, as if he was deep in thought.
