- Chapter 12 - It’s Not Senior Brother’s Fault
Uncle Chen knew I would be sent to this place. He hoped for me to follow the person standing before me. To live as an ordinary child…
“This seat asks you! What’s your name?” Sang Jingli frowned deeply, his impatience growing more apparent. His sharp, hawk-like eyes locked onto the small child in front of him. At this moment, Sang Jingli’s anger was already burning fiercely. If not for the precious artifact involved, he would have crushed this ignorant brat without hesitation.
The child trembled slightly, tears welling in his eyes. In a voice as soft as a mosquito’s buzz, he answered, “I… my name is Mu Xuan…” As soon as he finished speaking, he couldn’t help but sob quietly.
Sang Jingli let out a cold snort and unceremoniously grabbed Mu Xuan from his soft, comfortable bed, tossing him aside like garbage. “Go find someone yourself, tell them you are this seat’s guard, and have them arrange food and lodging for you. Do you understand?”
The poor child was thrown harshly onto the cold, hard floor, landing on his backside with a painful thud. He dared not resist in the slightest. He only rubbed his sore spot with small hands, his eyes still brimming with aggrieved tears.
Mu Xuan sat frozen for a full two seconds before snapping out of his daze. He quickly scrambled up from the ground, frantically grabbing the life-saving artifact he clung to like a lifeline, holding it tightly in his arms before dashing toward the door, as if fleeing from a monstrous beast.
Time passed, the once timid and cowardly Mu Xuan had now grown into an adult. Like a shadow, he silently infiltrated Sang Jingli’s sleeping chambers. With cautious steps, he approached the bedside, climbing up carefully to gaze at the sleeping face of Sang Jingli.
Moonlight spilled through the window, highlighting the strong contours of his face and his tightly shut eyes. Even in sleep, Sang Jingli still looked cold and unapproachable. But in Mu Xuan’s heart, he was a good person.
For ten years, he stayed by Sang Jingli’s side. The demons’ situation had worsened, besides being suppressed by the righteous sects, the beast clans were also eyeing them hungrily, and internal strife within the demon clan never ceased.
To stabilize the demon clan and intimidate enemies, Sang Jingli forcibly increased his strength by cultivating both spiritual energy and demonic power. Though his power surged, he suffered unbearable pain from monthly meridian impacts.
Now, his condition had worsened to the point of an imminent spiritual energy eruption, if he didn’t find a solution soon, he would die.
Mu Xuan didn’t want him to die. Sang Jingli was his master, his only reliance in this world. He didn’t care whether Sang Jingli was human or demon. He only knew that this man had raised him. His master was his family, and the demon realm was his home.
Meanwhile, Tang Yu lay on his bed, utterly bored. He hadn’t slept well the night before, wrapped up like a dumpling, even turning over was a struggle. But he had to admit, Rong Jiuchuan’s medical skills were impressive.
In just one night, the swelling in his left arm had subsided, and the pain had lessened. At this rate, he’d be fully recovered in half a month.
By evening, he couldn’t take it anymore and decided to remove the bandages himself.
“Yu’er, what are you doing?”
A sudden voice startled Tang Yu.
‘Damn it, how did Fu Qingyin enter his room without knocking?!’
At that moment, Tang Yu was in the middle of an intense battle with his bandages. Because some areas were hard to reach, he had ended up tying himself up even tighter instead.
“I…” Tang Yu blinked, which made Fu Qingyin chuckle softly.
How had he never noticed before, Tang Yu was actually quite adorable?
“Turn around, I’ll help you,” Fu Qingyin said, guiding him to sit properly on the bed.
Tang Yu wanted to refuse, he had just promised Shi Yunyi yesterday that he wouldn’t get close to Fu Qingyin. Yet here he was, letting the man tend to him.
The moment his hands were freed, Fu Qingyin handed him a bowl of medicine. “Drink this.”
“Master, what is this…?” Tang Yu didn’t remember Rong Jiuchuan prescribing this medicine yesterday.
“It’s a tonic. You’re too thin.” Fu Qingyin lightly blew on the medicine and held it to Tang Yu’s lips. “Let me feed you.”
Tang Yu’s face stiffened, and he hurriedly took the bowl himself. “Master, I can drink it myself.”
Looking at the murky, black liquid, he braced himself and downed it in one gulp. The moment he set the bowl down, his face twisted in agony.
‘What the hell?! This was unbearably bitter!’
Fu Qingyin chuckled and shook his head. “You’re still afraid of bitterness, just like when you were little.” With that, he placed a candied fruit into Tang Yu’s mouth. “Here, this will make it better.”
Tang Yu’s face flushed. He was already a grown man, yet being fed like this felt awkward. “Master, I finished drinking… you can leave now.”
“Oh? Are you trying to chase your master away?” Fu Qingyin teased, continuing to untie the remaining bandages. Tang Yu blocked his hands. “Master, I can do it myself.”
Fu Qingyin ignored him, pulling out a porcelain bottle from Rong Jiuchuan’s prescriptions and gently applying medicine to the scars on Tang Yu’s chest.
Tang Yu squirmed uncomfortably, instinctively covering his chest. “Master… I can do it myself—”
Before he could finish, Fu Qingyin interrupted him.
“Yu’er, are you still angry with me?” He pried Tang Yu’s hands away, stubbornly tending to his wounds himself.
“I’m not,” Tang Yu murmured, not daring to resist.
He hadn’t forgotten, Fu Qingyin’s strength was nearly on par with Sang Jingli’s. In their entire sect, only the grandmaster and sect leader were stronger.
“I neglected you all these years, I know you must be upset.” Fu Qingyin sighed bitterly.
He had always assumed Tang Yu was just reclusive and disliked closeness. Besides, he had only taken Tang Yu as a disciple because the sect leader forced him to, it hadn’t been his choice.
For years, he indeed hadn’t fulfilled his duties as a master. Later, he took on two more disciples, Ling Yan and Shi Yunyi. By the time he wanted to make it up to Tang Yu, it was too late. By then, Tang Yu avoided him, and after so much time, Fu Qingyin almost forgot he had an eldest disciple.
“Master, you misunderstand. I’m not angry,” Tang Yu quickly replied. “A disciple is bound to his master for life. How could I resent you? If anything, I should blame myself, I haven’t contributed to the sect or brought you any honor.”
Hearing Tang Yu’s words, Fu Qingyin felt even worse. He carefully continued applying the medicine, changing the subject. “Doctor Rong said you don’t need to be bandaged anymore. Just be careful not to get the wound wet.”
Tang Yu nodded obediently. “Thank you, Master.”
Meanwhile, outside the window, Shi Yunyi’s fingers dug deep into the wooden frame, leaving visible scratches. He had originally come to bring Tang Yu some pastries. But before he even stepped inside, he saw two figures through the window. The flickering candlelight cast their silhouettes onto the floor, making them appear even more intimate.
Fu Qingyin’s hand lightly brushed against Tang Yu. Tang Yu trembled slightly but didn’t pull away. Yesterday, Tang Yu had promised him, he wouldn’t get close to their master.
So why was Fu Qingyin in his room now?
Shi Yunyi remained outside, just as Tang Yu had once spied on him. Watching, he saw Tang Yu’s bare back, covered in whip scars. Saw his reddened ears and neck as Fu Qingyin tended to him. He heard Fu Qingyin’s low chuckle, their lighthearted conversation.
And then he remembered Tang Yu’s words from yesterday.
“From now on, we are just senior and junior brothers.”
‘But what about you and Master? Are you really just master and disciple?’
Shi Yunyi clenched his fists, purple light flickering in his eyes. Tang Yu had already promised him. This wasn’t Tang Yu’s fault.
It was Master who approached him first.
