- Chapter 7 - From Stranger to Roommate
The car pulled directly into the garage. Jiang Yuan lugged Jing Ying’s suitcase out of the trunk, then hurried over to unlock the front door. The moment she stepped inside, her eyes widened in shock.
This villa was excessively lavish. She had assumed the original host rarely stayed here and had only arranged for minimal furnishing. However, the moment she entered, she realized the interior was not simply furnished but fully outfitted with luxury. Every item, from furniture to appliances, was top-of-the-line. The space was immaculate, not a speck of dust anywhere. Clearly, someone had been hired to maintain it regularly.
Jing Ying looked around and couldn’t help but frown slightly. “No one else from the company lives here? I’m the only one?”
Jiang Yuan choked on her breath and rubbed her nose, clearly flustered. “Uh… for now, yes. Just you. But new people will definitely move in later. You won’t be alone.”
“I want to visit the company then. I’d like to meet the other employees.” Jing Ying spoke with calm seriousness.
Jiang Yuan: …
Her forehead was drenched in cold sweat.
Other employees?
How was she supposed to explain that she was the only person in the company? That the entire entertainment company had only been registered yesterday, so she could get close to this goddess?
“Um… the other artists are busy with their own events. And the company is currently scouting new office locations. Things are a little chaotic right now. How about you stay here for a while? I’ll take you over later, when things are more settled.”
Jing Ying: …
She gave Jiang Yuan a sidelong glance.
A single glance made Jiang Yuan’s back go stiff, as though everything she’d been hiding had just been exposed.
The look in Jing Ying’s eyes felt like she was staring at a trafficker.
Thankfully, she didn’t press further.
Jiang Yuan let out a long, quiet breath of relief.
But then—
Jing Ying scanned her up and down. “This house is yours, isn’t it? Your company doesn’t have any other artists, does it?”
“Huh? How did you know that?”
Jiang Yuan’s eyes flew wide. The words slipped out before she could stop them. She clamped a hand over her mouth.
Too late.
Jing Ying: …
She didn’t even know how to look this girl in the eye.
Truthfully, she had looked Jiang Yuan up yesterday.
Jiang Yuan, little princess of the Jiang family. Daughter of the wealthiest man in the country.
But she had no entertainment company registered under her name.
Yet this morning, she had produced a contract.
That could only mean one thing. This “Yuan Ying Media” must have been hastily established just yesterday.
Which also explained why Jiang Yuan had claimed she forgot the contract yesterday morning, only to conveniently have it prepared today.
Still, she signed.
Her instincts told her Jiang Yuan wasn’t lying.
With her background, there was no need.
And more importantly, in her current situation, she had no better option.
But what she didn’t understand was why this girl went through all this effort just to get close to her.
“Miss Jiang, may I ask why you’re doing all this?”
Jing Ying placed her suitcase on the floor. She stood straight with composed poise, her eyes calm and sharp as they locked onto the girl standing before her.
Jiang Yuan felt like her little scheme had been peeled wide open in that instant.
She licked her lips, nervous.
A tiny pink tongue flicked out briefly. Her eyes wandered, unsure where to look.
Her fingers twisted together, her two index fingers tapping each other in sync as her mind raced.
Finally, when she couldn’t come up with anything else, she gave up and came clean.
“Um… Miss Jing, I’ll just be honest with you. I made a bet with my brother. He said I was aimless and had no drive. I wanted to prove him wrong, to show him I could actually accomplish something. But I didn’t know what to do. I was stuck. Then I saw you. You look amazing. Your image is perfect. I thought, if you enter the entertainment industry, you’ll definitely be a star. So I figured, if I help you succeed, maybe I’ll prove myself at the same time.”
She paused, lowered her eyes, then added, “You probably already know… my reputation in Nancheng is terrible. People laugh at me no matter where I go. But I really do want to change that. Just once, I want people to see me differently. I just don’t know… can you help me?”
She spoke fast, tripping over her words a little. Half truth, half fluster.
Her large eyes shimmered, blinking rapidly. Her long lashes fluttered like tiny fans, brushing straight against Jing Ying’s heart.
As she finished speaking, her lips curved into a faint pout, and her eyes pleaded with unspoken urgency. There was no trace of the arrogant heiress she was rumored to be. Instead, she resembled a gentle kitten, quietly wagging its tail in a silent bid for affection.
Jing Ying’s tightly wound posture relaxed.
“All right.”
“Huh? You’re agreeing?”
Jiang Yuan watched as she nodded and picked up her suitcase.
Jing Ying met her eyes. “But I don’t want to live here. I don’t like special treatment. Since this isn’t an actual staff dorm, I’ll go back to my place.”
“Wait, what?”
Jiang Yuan blinked, then rushed over and grabbed her wrist.
Her wrist was slender and soft, just as she imagined. Smooth and pale, so slim that even the circle formed by her thumb and middle finger couldn’t completely wrap around it.
Jiang Yuan froze. She looked at her own hand, then up at Jing Ying’s face.
Right. She needed to speak.
“I already said this is your dorm. There’s no need to overthink it. It’s part of the contract, too. If you refuse to stay, wouldn’t that be a breach on my end? Besides, leaving this house empty is a waste. If I have to rent another place for you, that’s even more money. And if, in the future, when you debut, word gets out that you’re living in bad conditions, it’ll hurt your public image. And ours too. Don’t you think?”
Jing Ying thought, after spending just one day with this heiress, she was starting to realize she wasn’t nearly as brainless as the rumors claimed.
Especially when it came to persuasion. She was skilled.
She always knew how to phrase things so you couldn’t say no.
She had bundled her personal interest and the company’s image into one package.
If Jing Ying refused to stay, she’d be harming both.
Jing Ying frowned slightly.
“Then I have a condition.”
“What condition?”
Jiang Yuan looked at her with hope sparkling in her eyes.
As long as the goddess was willing to stay, she’d agree to anything.
“You’ll live here too. This is still your house. Just treat it like I’m renting a room. I’ll pay you rent every month.”
“Eh? What?”
Jiang Yuan blinked.
Jing Ying raised an eyebrow. “You don’t want to?”
Jiang Yuan quickly shook her head. Her entire face lit up with surprise. “No, I do! Of course I do! Forget the rent. That’s not even necessary!”
She was so thrilled she couldn’t even speak properly.
She had been racking her brain for an excuse to visit every day just to build their bond. Now the goddess herself wanted to live together?
Oh my god.
She had gone from being a complete stranger to a roommate in an instant.
Jiang Yuan nearly wanted to grab the goddess and kiss her.
There’s no way she couldn’t max out that affection meter now.
