- Chapter 12 - I’m Jing Ying. I’m Expensive. You Can’t Afford Me
The next morning, Jiang Yuan woke right on time. She remembered that the two top-tier agents arranged by her third brother were arriving today. Without hesitation, she got up, freshened up, got dressed, and called Uncle Jiang to pick them up promptly at 8 AM.
After the call, she went downstairs and was surprised to see two glasses of warm milk already set on the dining table. Someone was moving in the kitchen. At first, she thought it must be a maid Uncle Jiang had hired, but as she stepped closer, she saw it was actually Jing Ying.
Jing Ying wore an apron around her waist and was focused on frying eggs.
Her delicate face looked especially serious. That usual cold expression had softened into one of calm concentration. It felt like she wasn’t just making fried eggs but performing a task that required utmost care.
“Xiao Ying’er, what are you doing? You look so serious.”
Jing Ying turned at the sound of her voice and glanced over. Today, Jiang Yuan had traded yesterday’s seductive outfit for a crisp white blouse with a bow at the collar, paired with loose-fitting slacks. She looked polished and sharp, exuding a poised maturity.
Jing Ying reached out and gave her a gentle tap on the head. “I already told you. Don’t call me Xiao Ying’er.”
Jiang Yuan: …
Throwing her arm around Jing Ying’s shoulders, she leaned in playfully and said in a sweet, exaggerated tone, “Alright, alright. I’ll remember, Sister Jing~”
Her exaggerated act made even herself cringe, and she quickly stood upright, brushing off her goosebumps.
What caught her off guard was that Jing Ying didn’t look annoyed at all. The corners of her lips even lifted in a faint smile.
Jiang Yuan couldn’t help but laugh. She watched as Jing Ying took the fried egg, placed it on two slices of toasted bread, and layered it with colorful vegetables. The red and green made the sandwich look as pretty as it was appetizing.
“Are you making a sandwich?”
Jing Ying nodded. “Yes. I don’t know how to make anything else yet. I’ll learn more in the future, but this is what I can manage for now.”
“That’s totally fine.”
Jiang Yuan waved her hands quickly, her face filled with delight. Her eyes sparkled as she watched Jing Ying work with such focus, and her own smile widened without realizing it.
After placing the egg on the bread, Jing Ying added a slice of toasted ham, drizzled some salad dressing, and carefully layered on another slice of bread.
She was precise in everything. Even a simple sandwich looked tidy and expertly made in her hands.
When she handed the plate to Jiang Yuan, the sandwich was topped with two halves of boiled egg to form eyes, and ketchup was used to draw hair and a smiling face.
Jiang Yuan burst out laughing.
“It’s adorable.”
She took a bite and nodded with satisfaction. “It tastes great too.”
Jing Ying pursed her lips. “Really?”
Watching the girl across from her eat so happily lifted her mood without her noticing.
They chatted idly over breakfast. When Jiang Yuan asked about her plans for the afternoon, Jing Ying said she knew Jiang Yuan’s company had just been registered and still needed time to set up. She wasn’t in a hurry to start work, so she would take this time to care for her mother. Since Jiang Yuan had to pick someone up soon, they decided to leave together after eating.
Jiang Yuan offered to drop Jing Ying off at the hospital, but she declined politely, saying she had some personal matters to handle. Jiang Yuan didn’t pry.
As the car neared the airport, Jiang Yuan suddenly realized what had been bothering her since morning. Something important had slipped her mind. She slapped her thigh and said, “Turn the car around.”
Uncle Jiang was taken aback. “Miss, the third young master’s people are about to arrive. If you turn back now, it won’t look good.”
He clearly wasn’t pleased.
The young miss had said she wanted to start a company, and the third young master had even gone to the trouble of arranging help. Now they were just about to meet the agents, and she suddenly wanted to turn back? What would they think?
Just a few days ago, he had believed she was finally becoming mature. Now it seemed like she was still acting impulsive at the worst moments.
“Miss, you know the two agents arranged by the third young master are top-tier in the entertainment world. Their reputations are as big as their tempers. If you back out now and don’t show them proper respect, it will be nearly impossible to work with them later.”
Uncle Jiang’s tone grew serious. He was clearly angry.
Jiang Yuan knew exactly how important those agents were. In the original timeline, her past self had tried to launch a company too, but it fell apart because she offended them. The business failed, and all three of her brothers were deeply disappointed in her.
Even now, knowing she shouldn’t offend them, she was still going to.
During the entire ride, she had been racking her brain trying to figure out what kind of trouble the female lead might encounter next. Then it struck her. Before they had left the house, Jing Ying had mentioned she needed to handle some personal matters, and now Jiang Yuan suddenly remembered exactly what those were.
In the original plot, Jing Ying was supposed to meet a senior she had feelings for. But due to a misunderstanding, she got assaulted by his ex-girlfriend.
As soon as Jiang Yuan recalled that detail, she couldn’t sit still.
“Uncle Jiang, I really have something urgent to take care of. You go and meet the agents first. I’ll join you as soon as I’m done, alright?”
After explaining, she told the driver to stop and got out of the car to hail a taxi.
…
Jing Ying checked her phone and confirmed the address. She had arrived at the café.
The moment she stopped at the entrance, someone inside spotted her and waved.
Jing Ying frowned and walked in.
“Senior Su Cheng.”
The man called Su Cheng froze when he saw her.
Jing Ying’s beauty was legendary at Nancheng Performing Arts Academy. She was the campus belle, admired by boys and girls alike. Even the usually aloof Su Cheng had been captivated by her after catching a brief glimpse of her during a school event.
Her small face was flawless even without makeup. Her cold yet transparent presence set her apart from all the heavily made-up, flashy girls on campus.
Su Cheng quickly stood up and pulled out a chair. “Xiao Ying, have a seat.”
Jing Ying glanced at his extended hand and frowned. “No need. I’ll stand. If you have something to say, just say it. I’m in a hurry.”
Su Cheng didn’t seem fazed. He smiled and said, “You don’t need to be so guarded. I really did come here for something important. I want to sign you to Huaxia Entertainment. I know your family’s financial situation isn’t great, and I heard you urgently need money. If you join Huaxia, I can speak to my father and get you a debut spot immediately. Your mother’s medical bills will no longer be a problem. My dad doesn’t sign just anyone, but if I tell him you’re my girlfriend and future wife, that will take care of everything. Xiao Ying… what do you think?”
He slowly moved closer as he spoke.
Jing Ying stared at him coldly. A mocking smile tugged at her lips. “So you’re trying to buy me with money?”
“No, that’s not what I meant. I truly like you. I sincerely want to help. Please don’t make it sound so harsh.”
Su Cheng continued inching closer.
Jing Ying remained expressionless. Her eyes swept over him with quiet scorn.
“I think you misunderstood. I’ve already signed with someone else, and I don’t need your money. Take your offer elsewhere. I’m Jing Ying. I’m expensive. You can’t afford me.”
She turned to leave.
Just then, a woman suddenly screamed and charged over. “You slut! Trying to steal my boyfriend, are you?!”
Jing Ying narrowed her eyes and started to raise her hand, but before she could respond, someone rushed in from the side even faster. That someone stepped in front of her and raised a hand to block the cup that had been thrown.
