- Chapter 10 - Xiao Ying’er, You Don’t Actually Think I’m Trying To Keep You, Do You?
Their expressions both changed in an instant.
Li Tingshen’s face went cold, his sharp eyes freezing over. He clenched his jaw and glared at Jiang Yuan as if he wanted to swallow her whole.
But Jiang Yuan didn’t take him seriously at all. She simply turned around and looked toward Jing Ying with a questioning glance.
Only then did Li Tingshen and Shen Mingzhu notice the young woman standing beside Jiang Yuan. And when they saw her face, both of them paused in surprise.
The girl’s appearance was soft and pure, with delicate, striking features. Her long hair draped down beside her face, setting off that small, palm-sized face of hers, making it even more lovely. Her skin was pale as snow, and her figure was graceful.
Even though she was wearing a cheap cartoon smiley-face T-shirt and a pair of three-quarter ripped jeans, she gave off an incredibly clean, outstanding air. It didn’t feel at all like she clashed with the elegant atmosphere of this upscale restaurant. In fact, standing next to Jiang Yuan, the two women gave off an oddly harmonious vibe that was eye-catching in a strange yet compelling way.
What stood out most was that the girl shared a slight resemblance to Shen Mingzhu. However, she carried a spark of liveliness and natural charm that Shen Mingzhu lacked.
Even Shen Mingzhu paused when she saw Jing Ying. Then she smiled and said gently, “This young lady does look a bit like me. For a moment, I thought she might be my little sister.”
Her voice was soft and sweet, appealing to a man’s ear. However, to Jiang Yuan, it was nauseating. She knew all too well that this woman was far from the innocent image she projected. Beneath the surface, she was thoroughly rotten, and that made her even more repulsive.
Upon hearing those words, Jing Ying stood up and walked over to Shen Mingzhu. Their gazes met. She let out a soft chuckle and said, “I wouldn’t dare be Miss Shen’s younger sister. If I could choose, I wouldn’t even want to share this slight resemblance.”
Shen Mingzhu’s face stiffened.
Jiang Yuan sharply picked up on the subtle weight in Jing Ying’s voice as she spoke, a kind of pressure that pressed down.
But the next second, Jing Ying looked over at Jiang Yuan and smiled lightly. “This is Miss Jiang’s gathering. I’ll follow whatever Miss Jiang says.”
Her behavior showed restraint and elegance, clearly distinguishing guest from host.
Jiang Yuan couldn’t help thinking this beauty really had a flawless personality.
But something about it also felt strange.
Since the conversation had returned to her, Jiang Yuan nodded thoughtfully and said, “Well, since my Xiao Ying’er doesn’t mind, then neither do I.”
She then waved over a waiter and pointed to the unwanted pair. “Please bring Mr. Li and Miss Shen two plates. Just serve them some random Western dishes. But no alcohol. They’re standing, it’s inconvenient to drink.”
Li Tingshen: …
His face was already dark beyond recognition.
“Jiang Yuan!”
As Jiang Yuan turned to return to her seat, she heard Li Tingshen call her name. She spun around, a flirtatious smile on her face. “Hmm? Is there something else Mr. Li is unhappy with?”
Li Tingshen stormed a few steps closer and glared at her.
His clenched teeth made a grinding sound.
“You think doing all this will make me see you differently? That I’ll start liking you? Don’t kid yourself.”
“…”
Now it was Jiang Yuan’s turn to be caught off guard.
She really hadn’t expected Li Tingshen to be so full of himself.
She paused, then leaned against the table casually, as if trying to think seriously. She tilted her head slightly, and said, “Emmm… Mr. Li, I think you’ve really misunderstood. I used to be a bit immature, sure. If I saw a pretty little guy at a club, I might impulsively send him a few gifts and chase him for a few days. But once I got bored of the game, they didn’t mean anything to me. So honestly, the way I used to fawn over you? You don’t have to take it seriously. I certainly didn’t. What do you think?”
She lifted her eyes and looked up at him with a radiant, blooming smile.
Li Tingshen’s face turned dark enough to kill.
Was she saying that all her previous attention had just been treating him like one of those MBs at the club?
F**k!
“Jiang Yuan, you’re unbelievable!”
“Mmm. We’re all adults. Let’s not overthink things.”
Li Tingshen was so furious that he kicked over the table and stormed off.
Shen Mingzhu hurried after him. But after a few steps, she turned and looked back at Jing Ying.
“What’s your name?”
“Jing. Ying.”
The girl responded calmly.
Once the two had left, Jiang Yuan glanced at the mess of food on the floor and called the waiter again. “Clean this up. Send the bill to Li Corporation. Make sure Mr. Li pays every cent.”
The waiter nodded quickly. “Yes, ma’am.”
Jiang Yuan sighed and turned to Jing Ying. “Sorry about that, Miss Jing. I didn’t expect it to turn out like this. We didn’t even finish our meal. Are you hungry?”
Jing Ying lightly shook her head.
“Then let’s head home.”
After all that trouble stirred up by Li Tingshen, Jiang Yuan really didn’t feel like eating anymore. Once Jing Ying agreed, the two of them drove home.
She hadn’t had a drop of wine, so this didn’t count as drunk driving.
Along the way, Jiang Yuan kept apologizing to Jing Ying for the chaos tonight.
At the same time, she absolutely loathed that bastard Li Tingshen.
What was truly strange was that when he left, his affection score had dropped straight to -100. But not long after, it jumped back up to -90.
This was… very strange.
Was Li Tingshen one of those masochistic types?
The more she humiliated him, the more fired up he got?
Jiang Yuan shook her head and dropped the thought. She focused her attention on Jing Ying. As long as Jing Ying’s affection score didn’t fall, she could still stay safe.
What she didn’t notice was that since getting in the car, Jing Ying hadn’t said a word. Her head was slightly bowed in thought, occasionally glancing toward Jiang Yuan.
Once they got home, Jiang Yuan pulled into the garage and parked. She unbuckled her seatbelt, but Jing Ying didn’t move.
Jiang Yuan found it strange. “Xiao Ying’er, what’s wrong?”
“Are you treating me the same way you treat those MBs?”
The question came out of nowhere.
Jiang Yuan didn’t understand at first.
But when she turned her head, she met Jing Ying’s eyes, which were serious and slightly filled with anger.
Jiang Yuan paused, then suddenly understood what Jing Ying was thinking.
She burst into laughter.
Jing Ying: ??
Jiang Yuan slumped onto the steering wheel, laughing uncontrollably. “Xiao Ying’er, you don’t actually think I’m trying to keep you, do you?”
“…”
Jing Ying didn’t say anything.
But her expression clearly said she did.
Jiang Yuan was laughing so hard her shoulders trembled. Tears were about to fall.
She had never imagined that this supposedly cold and aloof female lead would have such a wild imagination!
Yes, she had approached her with gifts, bought her a house, signed contracts, and even handed over money. From the outside, it looked like she was wooing her.
But heaven knew, she was just trying to get closer, to become best friends. She needed the love and protection of her bestie to stay alive!
Besides!
They were both women!
What was there to pursue?
Once Jiang Yuan had laughed enough, she straightened up and waved her hand, suppressing her remaining laughter. She said seriously, “Don’t worry. I know you don’t like women. I don’t like women either. I’m definitely not trying to keep you. I just want to invest in you. Everything I’ve given you is to help you build a platform. I’m counting on you to make my company flourish. Do you understand what I mean?”
“…I understand.”
Jing Ying’s face was tinged with a bit of red from the misunderstanding.
She gave a small nod.
Still, hearing Jiang Yuan explain it like that, something in her heart felt a little off.
Looking at the woman in front of her, at that radiant face still glowing from laughter, and that body still lightly trembling, Jing Ying’s heart began to race. She didn’t know if it was from embarrassment or something else entirely. But tonight, she felt strange.
“But to tell you the truth, I really do want to be friends with you. You know I don’t have many friends. You’re exactly my type. So when I give you something, don’t think too much about it. I truly believe you’ll be famous one day. You’ll succeed.”
Jing Ying: …
She pressed her lips together and finally said, “If Miss Jiang only wants to invest and be friends, then please be mindful of your words. Don’t say things that cause misunderstandings.”
With that, she unbuckled her seatbelt, opened the door, and got out of the car.
Jiang Yuan: ????
