- Chapter 19 - Su Cheng: This Shizi is Quite Charming
Hello everyone! This is my very first project and I am very excited to be posting this. If you like my work, please consider supporting me on my Ko-Fi.
Su Cheng snorted coldly, mounted his horse, and moved forward. All the contestants lined up, each in their lane. Moments later, a whistle blew, and everyone shot forward like arrows from a bow!
The horse race wasn’t just about speed; the track had various curves and obstacles. Su Cheng was an expert rider; although his horse was average, his riding skills were exceptional. He navigated jumps and turns without slowing down at all. His red robe fluttered like fire, making him stand out vividly.
If it were any ordinary person, Su Cheng would have left them far behind. Fortunately, Wei Lan was skilled in riding and archery, having honed her skills on the battlefield for years. Following closely behind Su Cheng, she maintained her distance.
Her face was calm and composed, her white robe fluttering like a crane spreading its wings. She and Su Cheng on the track, one red and one white, one ahead and one behind, were exceptionally eye-catching.
Xie Zichen stood on the viewing platform, his hands folded within his black robe, silently watching the two on the track. His hands unconsciously clenched into fists.
He had placed all his bets on Wei Lan…
But was Wei Lan truly someone he could completely trust?
He stood quietly, observing the person on the track. Cheers and shouts surrounded him. Wang Ning, standing beside him, sighed, “This Wei Shizi is truly remarkable. He looks delicate, but once on horseback, he’s so valiant. A true hero!”
If a person widely expected to excel had such riding skills, people wouldn’t be surprised. But Wei Lan’s contradiction was what made him remarkable.
He appeared to be a refined, romantic gentleman, but once on the track, he seemed like a different person.
Riding with the speed of wind, he remained unflustered even when his horse nearly tilted sideways. The contrast between the horse’s speed and his calm demeanor, the horse’s strength and his elegance, created a strikingly contradictory beauty.
Refined yet gallant.
It made people admire him. Even the Crown Prince, Su Xuan, watching from the high platform, whispered to Wang Xi, “A man should be like Wei Shizi.”
Wang Xi remained silent, holding his folding fan, watching the dazzling white-robed youth on the track. His usual playful smile faded, replaced by an unreadable expression in his dark eyes.
He picked up the wine glass and sipped on it and, as if driven by an unseen force, added, “If a daughter were like this, it would be equally great.”
His words were drowned out by the crowd’s cheers. Su Cheng and Wei Lan had left everyone far behind, approaching the finish line. Everyone expected Su Cheng to win. Suddenly, Su Cheng’s horse neighed loudly and stumbled forward! Su Cheng’s face changed as he was flung off the horse by its force. The crowd screamed. At that moment, a pale, slender hand reached out to Su Cheng.
It was a delicate, feminine hand that, in that moment, displayed immense strength, firmly grabbing his wrist and pulling him back. Su Cheng was caught mid-air, his waist held by strong hands and placed back on the horse.
Before Su Cheng could steady himself, he fell back onto the person’s reins-holding hand. The person looked down at him, half-smiling, “Didn’t Your Highness tell me to stay away? Why are you throwing yourself into my arms now?”
Her eyes seemed to glimmer with spring water, her peach blossom eyes were soft and beautiful, making one’s heart race.
Su Cheng, still processing, heard her shout, and before the crowd could come to their senses, she rode the horse, holding him, leaping over the final obstacle, and crossed the finish line!
The crowd finally erupted in cheers. Wei Lan looked at the dazed Su Cheng, laughing softly, “Shall I let go and dismount now, Your Highness?”
Su Cheng’s face turned crimson. Wei Lan laughed heartily, dismounted, and, in a few strides, reached the podium where the peach blossom was kept, grabbing it before the eunuch could react. The eunuch hurried after her, “Wei Shizi, the results haven’t been announced yet!”
Although Wei Lan saved Su Cheng, he was still a prince. If the Crown Prince wanted to favor him, the first place might not go to Wei Lan.
The eunuch was anxious, and the crowd was stunned. Su Cheng sat on the horse, watching the white-robed figure with the peach blossom approach him.
The light shone on her, making her glow. Ignoring everyone, she handed the peach blossom to Su Cheng.
“Peach blossoms bloom beautifully, and so do beauties. I offer this flower, hoping Your Highness will forgive my rudeness today.”
The crowd fell silent. Those with good hearing could hear Wei Lan’s words. Xie Zichen’s face darkened as Wang Ning exclaimed, “This is bad! The Third Prince hates it when people comment on his delicate appearance!”
Xie Zichen pressed his lips, feeling exasperated.
Saving someone is one thing, but creating unnecessary trouble, doesn’t she think there’s enough already?!
Everyone expected Su Cheng to be furious, but he suddenly smiled, a captivating smile that stunned Wei Lan.
Su Cheng took the peach blossom, sniffed it lightly, and said in a low voice, “Today, I’ve witnessed Wei Shizi’s charm.”
Seeing him smell the flower, Wei Lan felt pleased, her hands tucked into her sleeves, smiling, “Does Your Highness dislike it?”
“Not at all.”
Su Cheng laughed, “I find Wei Shizi very interesting. How about a boat trip on the lake someday?”
“Your Highness’s invitation,” Wei Lan bowed slightly, smiling, “I dare not refuse.”
Su Cheng smiled, said no more, and rode off. Once away from the track, his face darkened, instructing his guard, “Find out if Wei Lan tampered with the horse.”
“Yes.” The guard nodded and left quickly. Wei Lan’s gaze swept over Su Cheng, then casually back to Xie Zichen.
Xie Zichen stood on the high platform in black, easily identifiable despite the crowd.
He resembled a proud crane, a noble leopard, elegant and powerful, containing immense strength within his silence.
He watched her, his gem-like eyes cold, like dead water, unperturbed.
Wei Lan’s heart skipped a beat.
Wait, that peach blossom was meant for Xie Zichen!
Seeing him look at her like that, he must be angry!!
If Xie Zichen knew her thoughts, he would have collapsed again.
At this moment, who cares about those damn peach blossoms!!
