- Chapter 47 - The Cannon Fodder (Part Fourteen)
Jian Tongyao made a decision that surprised even herself. After leaving a trace of consciousness on Ling Yan, she went to chase after the little golden dragon.
The little golden dragon fled frantically for five li away. His collar, which radiated an aura of nouveau riche extravagance, was hooked by a slender finger with a light touch. He could only spin in place. He struggled with all his might but couldn’t break free. Immediately, he turned his head around pitifully and met Jian Tongyao’s expressionless face. Like a magic trick, he quickly changed into a new face to gain sympathy.
If Qian Jiujiu had been there, she would have scolded him without hesitation. She would have called him shameless.
It was no wonder. The little golden dragon loved nothing more than cross-dressing. His female features were transformed to match Jian Tongyao’s eyebrows and eyes exactly. When the little golden dragon could truly take human form, he had already adopted this appearance.
Over the past two hundred years, Qian Jiujiu would beat him up every time they met. Eighty percent of the reason was that she felt the little golden dragon was using this method to humiliate the Master who was like a lofty moon over high mountains in her heart. She wholeheartedly wanted to tear off his face. Unfortunately, before she could succeed in tearing it, the little golden dragon would escape.
Jian Tongyao faced this high-quality imitation face with a somewhat dazed expression. Strictly speaking, this face with slightly softer angular features was her true appearance. Having maintained a detached and aloof persona for a hundred years, she had nearly forgotten her original face.
“Dingding.”
Dingding responded, “Mm…”
The little golden dragon trembled all over from that single call. His jet-black pupils darted around everywhere, his head moved erratically, his hands and feet shrank inward, and a brilliant golden little snake whooshed down into the grass. He demonstrated on the spot for Jian Tongyao the art of shedding one’s shell like a cicada.
Jian Tongyao let out a mocking laugh. Looking at the clothes hanging in her hand, she shook them twice and shook out from within a slender little dragon that had been hiding inside. The little golden dragon coiled his body and connected head to tail, tying himself into a knot. Without careful observation, one might mistake him for a gold jewelry pendant.
“Roasted snake meat actually tastes quite good. I just don’t know how roasted dragon meat would taste. I’ve never tried it before.”
“…”
The little golden dragon quietly lifted his eyelids and saw Jian Tongyao skillfully set up a wooden frame. She gathered materials locally, piling up enough firewood underneath to fuel a fire. A cluster of flames casually leaped out. The crackling sound of burning was infinitely amplified in his ears like surround sound.
Aoooo!!!
Watching himself being placed into the fire pit, the little golden dragon let out a series of miserable screams that didn’t sound like dragon cries at all. The tip of his tail trembled even more as it rested against the inside of Jian Tongyao’s wrist in a final struggle.
Jian Tongyao rolled up his tail and played with it.
“Don’t be afraid. I’ll drizzle some oil on you later so you won’t burn easily. When the meat is cooked, it will definitely smell very fragrant…”
The little golden dragon shook even more violently.
“No, no, no. I don’t want to become roasted meat.”
Jian Tongyao clattered as she threw the wooden stick into the fire pit.
“Then confess. Leniency for those who confess, severity for those who resist.”
The little golden dragon nodded frantically.
“I’ll confess, I’ll confess. I’ll tell everything.”
Jian Tongyao snorted with laughter. Dingding, in its role as a system, remained as silent as a chicken and didn’t dare make a sound.
After Jian Tongyao threw the little golden dragon to the ground, he quickly changed back into female clothing. He clung to her legs and began to cry and whimper pitifully. Facing her own face crying tears like pear blossoms in the rain, this experience made Jian Tongyao involuntarily recall many old memories. She lightly kicked the dragon at her feet. “Change your face.”
The little golden dragon pouted his lips aggrievedly. “But I was born with this face.”
Because they were identical, he couldn’t even cross-dress properly. Especially with a face exactly like Jian Tongyao’s, once he left Lingjiu Mountain, he could only change into a fake face again.
Jian Tongyao remained silent.
She had nearly forgotten that Dingding initially loved to transform into her exact likeness.
By all logic, she should have recognized this little golden dragon when she was at Lingjiu Mountain. But over two hundred years, had the little golden dragon’s personality grown to become completely opposite to Dingding’s character?
He had even become so glib and smooth-talking…
Jian Tongyao licked her teeth, feeling them itch.
“Dingding, he’s broken. Is that what this means?”
Chi chi—
Dingding pinched its voice. “Hello, Host. Your system has gone offline.”
Jian Tongyao was amused to the point of anger. She glanced at the little golden dragon, who seemed boneless.
“You deliberately approached Xu Jiao, didn’t you? Then you must know where Ling Yan is going next.”
In the previous world, the trace of consciousness that Dingding left on the little white fox followed her into this one. It even found a new identity for itself. Everything that happened afterward was like an unbridled wild horse, completely beyond System Dingding’s control.
The little golden dragon couldn’t comprehend the system’s old-father-like painstaking efforts. He suddenly stood up.
“I’ll take you there.”
Dingding could locate Ling Yan’s coordinates. After Jian Tongyao compared them slightly and confirmed the route was correct, she then remembered this little golden dragon’s matter of using his appearance to seduce people. She couldn’t help but tease, “Dingding, although this little golden dragon is formed from a fragment of your consciousness, he was originally as pure as a blank sheet of paper. What method did you use to turn him into a scumbag dragon?”
If Xu Jiao’s earlier story was true, the little golden dragon must have arrived before Ling Yan. He deceived Xu Jiao’s heart first, causing quiet trouble between Ling Yan and Xu Jiao, who were meant to become Dao companions.
Mission accomplished, he brushed off his clothes and left, hiding his achievements and fame deeply.
Dingding remained silent.
Jian Tongyao knew it wouldn’t answer.
“I imagine that for two hundred years, he stayed well on Lingjiu Mountain, eating and sleeping, sleeping and eating. His leisure activity was accompanying Seventh Sister in her cultivation. His sudden departure from Lingjiu Mountain must also have been at your command, correct?”
Dingding remained silent again.
The disguise had fallen off so quickly. It was all the fault of this playful dragon.
The little golden dragon acted extremely obsequiously as he led the way ahead, completely unaware of any undercurrents. He even shared the results he had achieved over the past few months with her.
“Ling Yan has been tormented quite severely by her inner demons. Later, she encountered a demonic cultivator. They colluded together and obtained the Fantian Branch early on. Now they’re just waiting for that foolish Xu Jiao to walk into their trap.”
Jian Tongyao replied, “So you’re saying Xu Jiao should thank you for your righteous assistance?”
The little golden dragon giggled foolishly, then scratched his head in great distress.
“If not for the fact that he’s from my own clan, I wouldn’t want to bother with him. I only hope that after this incident, he’ll stop saying those strange and bizarre things to me.”
So this little golden dragon was actually a pure and natural scumbag?
Jian Tongyao silently lit thirty-two candles for Xu Jiao, who still hoped the little golden dragon would have a change of heart.
“Since you know about Ling Yan developing inner demons, you must also know who the demonic cultivator is?”
When it came to this demonic cultivator’s deeds, the little golden dragon could talk endlessly for three days and three nights. This was because the demonic cultivator named Xiang Tian had quite an impressive background. Throughout the entire cultivation world, there was no one who didn’t know of him.
Xiang Tian was originally a disciple of the Lingshen Sect. Later, due to his fiancée being killed, his temperament changed drastically. He slaughtered his sect members, and after being expelled from the Lingshen Sect, he completely embarked on the path of demonic cultivation. Supposedly, to increase his strength, he committed all manner of evil deeds. He forcibly abducted other people’s dao companions or captured righteous sect disciples with higher cultivation levels to use as cauldrons. In his madness, he often did things that left people utterly baffled.
In short, this was a demonic cultivator without a bottom line and even without any weaknesses. He was very difficult to deal with.
“Ling Yan promised to give the demonic cultivator that silly Xu Jiao to use as a cauldron. Only then did she obtain a manual about an evil technique for phoenixes to avoid backlash.”
“So this is the real reason she wants to seize the body.” Jian Tongyao was unconcerned.
“Lead the way quickly.”
Xiang Tian lived on Demon Bone Island. The entire island was filled with demonic cultivators and puppets. If righteous sect people fell onto this island, more often than not, they would meet with disaster. Ling Yan entered without obstruction, bouncing around as if she were at her own doorstep.
Just as Jian Tongyao was about to force her way in, the little golden dragon grabbed her.
“If you show yourself like this, you’ll only provoke public outrage. Furthermore, if Xiang Tian finds out it’s you who came, I’m afraid he’ll tear off all pretense before we even get to talk!”
Others still had room for negotiation, but those from the Lingshen Sect received brutal treatment without exception! Especially since this demonic cultivator’s connection with Jian Tongyao wasn’t just as simple as fellow sect members. They were siblings from the same master.
Jian Tongyao watched as the little golden dragon fumbled around and somehow produced two disguise pills from somewhere. She refused promptly and directly picked up this dawdling little golden dragon.
The little golden dragon resembled a quail. When Jian Tongyao had walked halfway, he simply transformed into an ornament and automatically coiled around her wrist. This was better than letting this group of demonic cultivators know that he, a dignified golden dragon, was being dragged around by someone like a pet…
He needed to save face!!!
The demonic cultivators only saw the river surface calm and peaceful, with one person walking toward them as if treading on level ground. When she drew closer, they discovered that beneath the river surface, waves surged tumultuously. However, before they could make trouble, they were easily suppressed by Jian Tongyao. They all sucked in a breath of cold air and quickly retreated backward.
“Go tell your Demon Lord that his senior sister has arrived!”
“!!!”
They almost all knew the sordid affairs between the Demon Lord and the Lingshen Sect clearly. At the same time, they were also familiar with Jian Tongyao’s great reputation. For a moment, no one dared to pluck whiskers from the tiger’s face. Soon, someone went to report.
“Hehehe. After several hundred years of not seeing each other, you actually left that ghost place and came running to me. How truly rare.”
These words were spoken in a strange and mocking tone. Not only did Jian Tongyao not get angry, but she also remained exceptionally calm and composed. “I came today for two reasons. First, to reminisce about old times. Second, to ask you for a favor.”
“Hahahaha.”
Xiang Tian laughed maniacally several times, then suddenly changed his expression completely. He looked at her with a sinister gaze and questioned harshly, “On what basis? When I knelt before you back then and begged you, do you still remember what you said to me at that time!”
Jian Tongyao pondered for a long while. “I don’t remember.”
Xiang Tian’s furious face instantly became ferocious, like a demon that had just crawled up from underground.
“Don’t remember. Hahaha, what a good ‘don’t remember.'”
The demonic cultivators who had been egging them on to fight on the sidelines thought, “!!!”
As for the messy grudges between the original body and Xiang Tian, Jian Tongyao naturally knew about them, but they had little to do with her.
“Do you want to reminisce about old times in front of everyone? Or privately?”
Xiang Tian bared his teeth and showed her an evil smile.
“You still have the mood to reminisce with me about old times now? Shouldn’t you worry about your good disciple first?”
Jian Tongyao looked at his face full of malicious intent and sensed something slightly. Ling Yan’s aura had completely disappeared. The trace of consciousness she had left on the other party had also dissipated along with it.
“Dingding, is Ling Yan still on the island?”
Dingding replied, “Yes!”
Jian Tongyao felt reassured. No wonder she hadn’t sensed anyone following her last time. It turned out that Ling Yan had already gotten involved with the demonic cultivators by then. However, their flimsy alliance was destined to break. “Junior Brother, let me show you something interesting.”

Before I started, I checked NU and there was no listing at all, so I genuinely thought no one had picked it up. I only discovered another version after my team had already finished their assigned parts, so I couldn’t back out anymore. This was never meant as a snipe.
