- Chapter 21 - The Little Demon (Part Five)
Jian Tongyao felt like she was broken.
She did not know if it was because there was poison in the great demon’s blood she had absorbed too much of. It was said that snake demons were mostly lecherous by nature and possessed poison sacs inside them. Some even had naturally poisonous bodies that could kill with a single touch.
She was not clear if that snake demon carried any other viruses, but ever since absorbing that pool of blood, her entire vine body did not feel right. The strength with which her leaves curled up was much fiercer than usual, as if she were being shy. She knew she had lost control over her own strength.
Heat, panic, irritability…
All kinds of emotions that should not appear in a vine demon surfaced bit by bit throughout the night. She endured the discomfort to look after Qian Wanyu, using her own body temperature to cool the other person down every so often. However, strangely enough, human body temperature seemed contagious. By the latter half of the night, Jian Tongyao’s body was even hotter than the other party’s. The moment she leaned close, the unconscious person even seemed to despise the heat.
She wished it would rain heavily outside so she could get thoroughly soaked.
When the morning light shone on her body circle by circle, a yellow-orange leaf drifted down. That color stung the last of Jian Tongyao’s taut nerves.
Leaves turning yellow was a sign that a plant was about to wither. She had just gone bald during the past winter, and the rest of her green leaves had only recently grown back.
She never expected that within just a few days, she would face the risk of going bald again.
Refusing to believe in this curse, she ran to the edge of a nearby lake. The lake reflected a brilliant yellow vine, looking as if it had stepped into old age. It was so yellow that Jian Tongyao suspected she had contracted an incurable disease.
She did not even need to shake. When the wind blew, it was like the autumn wind sweeping away fallen leaves. After a few gusts, she became a bare commander without an army. She watched helplessly as the fallen leaves were wrapped up by the wind and rolled into the calm lake. They looked like small boats on the sea, but these small boats did not drift very far before the fish swimming freely at the bottom of the lake opened their mouths and swallowed them raw.
The fish jumped joyfully, but after bounding about for not very long, these unlucky fish twitched, flipped over, and revealed dead fish eyes.
Jian Tongyao was speechless.
Damn it, truly poisonous.
I’m done for. I just fed Qian Wanyu half a curled leaf yesterday, and I even fed it to her mouth-to-mouth.
With a face full of indifference and a heart like dead ash, she called out, “Love-You-to-Death System, did the target character die?”
“Checking target character’s physical attributes. Everything is normal. There seems to be a breakthrough.”
Jian Tongyao asked, “When will she die?”
The system ignored her unreasonable outburst and went directly into idle mode.
Jian Tongyao was somewhat puzzled by the two completely different results. The little white fox and Qian Wanyu were perfectly fine after eating the leaves. In fact, they had breakthroughs. In contrast, these fish flipped their white bellies after eating them. In just a short moment, a large patch of fish had died in the lake.
Poisonous.
Not poisonous.
Just as she was trying to solve the mystery of her own body, a magnificent scene appeared. Circles of ripples spread out from the lake, and two eyes as large as copper bells peeked at her from the water’s surface. Soon, a demon as round as a ball splashed out of the water, its body size occupying more than half the lake.
Jian Tongyao waited for the opponent’s volume to fully emerge before recognizing that this was a pufferfish spirit.
The pufferfish spirit opened his mouth, his imposing manner like a rainbow. “Where did this vine demon come from, acting wild in my waters? Do you take this Great King as non-existent?”
Jian Tongyao glanced at the dozens of fish flipping their white bellies and shrank back a little. Then, she realized all her leaves had fallen off, so she did not seem to have anything to be afraid of. In any case, she did not have long to live.
“How about you take a bite of me?”
The pufferfish spirit was speechless.
He felt that he had been provoked by a tiny vine demon. He immediately slapped the surface of the lake. The water that exploded upward instantly submerged Jian Tongyao, this pitiful and unlucky vine demon. Before she even had time to resist, a stinging pain struck her.
That pufferfish spirit did not say another word and truly took a bite of her. It was a vicious bite, as if he wanted to tear her entire plant body into fragments, but he did not use much force and released her very quickly.
And then..
The water surface churned. Jian Tongyao was slapped back to the shore. Her entire plant body was dripping wet, looking exceptionally weak, pitiful, and helpless. However, after this back and forth, the burning heat inside her seemed to have alleviated.
She jumped excitedly and quickly absorbed the moisture.
I have to thank this pufferfish spirit.
Jian Tongyao turned her head, only to see the pufferfish spirit, who had been lively and domineering just a moment ago, following in the footsteps of those fish with flipped white bellies.
“…”
“Great King.”
“Great King.”
The disturbance caused by the pufferfish spirit was too great. The little demons living in the entire lake had originally planned to secretly watch from the dark as their Great King taught a vine demon a lesson to gain some experience. However, reality slapped them in the face until they were bruised and swollen. Seeing Jian Tongyao suddenly look over, they immediately surfaced one after another, kowtowing in worship.
Jian Tongyao was speechless.
So I really am this poisonous. Even the pufferfish spirit couldn’t out-poison me.
When Jian Tongyao, who had suddenly become the tyrant of the water, returned, she looked dazed, her feet feeling like she was stepping on cotton balls. She did not want to be the tyrant of the lake at all, but those little demons were too enthusiastic. They spoke one after another, giving her absolutely no chance to refuse…
Truly worrying.
Her spirit was slightly in a trance, so much so that she only realized there was someone else in the cave besides Qian Wanyu when she had almost reached the entrance.
“The Benefactor saved us from deep waters and scorching fire. What I did was merely a lifting of a hand. Compared to the Benefactor’s act of righteousness, I truly cannot accept the word ‘thanks’.”
“Yan Ying has a presumptuous request. I hope the Benefactor will not refuse me.”
“Speak.”
“Yan Ying’s parents were all killed by snake demons. Now, I have no family left in Xianyao Town. I wish to follow you, Benefactor, and leave this place of heartbreak.”
Jian Tongyao, “???”
I’m done for.
Although she did not know what had happened during the hour she was away, she knew that this demon’s ability to bewitch people was much more formidable than that snake demon who had been chopped into several pieces. She was a scheming demon. Just based on the points of “parents all killed by demons” and “alone and helpless,” Qian Wanyu absolutely would not refuse the other party’s unreasonable request.
This was because Qian Wanyu’s life resume had this pasted on it: Lost family at a young age, parents all died at the hands of great demons, later was taken in by the Master passing through and brought back to Shenji Mountain to be raised…
Jian Tongyao was worried. Looking at her bare and even slightly yellowing vine body, she did not wait for Qian Wanyu to answer and left dejectedly.
She was a Lei Feng-style vine, doing good deeds without leaving a name, only to have someone else snatch the initiative. Pah, she had finally found a way to ease the tense relationship between her and the target character, yet it was occupied by a scheming demon.
Shameless!
Truly shameless!
Too shameless!
Jian Tongyao spat deeply in her heart, but she was still concerned about the little white fox whose life and death were uncertain. She wondered how the fox dealt with that woman, Jiang Qin. She hoped its four little paws had not been chopped off.
Meanwhile, in a world where data flew wildly, all the screens on the panel walls were scrolling with strings of code. A beep-beep-beep alarm sound rang out for no reason.
The gathered systems analyzed the source of the alarm one after another. Within just a few seconds, they quickly found that the cause was the Black Room.
The Black Room held a particularly bizarre system, codenamed 5438, also known as Dingding. It was said that 5438 insisted on taking this name for itself.
That system, due to violating employee regulations, system rules, the Main System’s orders, and other reasons, was sentenced to be melted down and remade. Before being remade, it was to be confined in the Black Room for one month.
Unexpectedly, the Black Room system completely paralyzed. The Main System came under an inexplicable attack. The data in every world showed signs of disorder and skipping. Everyone went into full rescue mode…
Therefore, no one paid attention to whether 5438, this bizarre system, was still in the Black Room.

This is a short fifty-chapter novel updating every other day, so you can bookmark it and follow the full run. Before I started, I checked NU and there was no listing at all, so I genuinely thought no one had picked it up. I only discovered another version after my team had already finished their assigned parts, so I couldn’t back out anymore. This was never meant as a snipe.
