Chapter 8: The Lion and Its Cub

“The above is the account of my first assignment, recounted by me, Meril Klein.”

Dozel and the former mercenaries were apprehended by the military police, and investigations would now extend to include merchants involved in the fraud.

I returned to the capital maintaining both honor and position.

After finalizing the report at the church headquarters, I happily made my way to the secure haven of my family, where my mother, the Holy Saint, resides.

I had decided never to undertake a demon-exorcism mission again.

With unwavering determination, I will decline all requests and relish a life embraced by the admiration of the capital.

Upon reaching my lavish family estate, reminiscent of a palace, I disembarked from the chauffeur-driven carriage without offering a word of gratitude.

I disregarded the gatekeepers’ “Welcome back” and hastened into the stunning garden, abounding with seasonal flowers…

“You’ve come back… little girl.”

Something caught my attention in the garden.

A towering figure of immaculate white.

With fangs that appear designed solely for devouring and killing, and eyes as red as fresh blood.

In the presumed absolute safe haven of my family’s garden, a creature lingered that should never have been there.

“Mama…!!!”

I screamed.

It’s okay.

The strongest guardian should be in the house.

If my scream reaches her, my mother will surely eliminate this beast.

“Oh, Meril-chan. Welcome back. Good job on your work.”

My mother emerged from behind the white wolf, holding a brush as she seemed to be grooming its fur.

“Here, what’s this…?”

“Oh. I hadn’t explained it to you yet. I just decided to take care of this little one a while ago.”

“Huh?”

“Oh, you know. You sent a telegraph seeking help, didn’t you? I had a bit of free time, so I hurried to the scene.”

I believe it’s a journey that would take several days even by carriage to reach the rural town where the incident occurred.

However, I’ve been accustomed to my mother’s extraordinary nature since childhood, so I won’t dwell on it too much.

“Then, I found this little one on the mountain pass. I considered swiftly eliminating it, but it declared, ‘Remember this, Exorcist. Your daughter is far more exceptional than you.’ So, I thought.”

Mother raised her finger sharply.

“You’ve got it! Meril-chan is truly remarkable!”

“And that’s how I was brought here…”

The white wolf murmured with a hint of sorrow.

“Why? Why did you bring it here, Mama?”

“Because… I heard you two became friends.

Besides, it’s easier to play when you’re nearby, right?”

I became serious and said,

“Mama, take it back to where you found it. Right now.”

“Why? It’s fine, isn’t it? Our garden is ridiculously vast.”

“In the capital! And in the garden of the house of the Saint! You can’t let a demon reside here!”

The white wolf gently touched my shoulder with its massive paw.

“My daughter, I appreciate your efforts to send me back to my habitat, but my resolve is already set.”

“What kind of resolve…?”

“Let me witness it. Watch as you surpass this lawless Exorcist and tread the path to becoming a true Saint.”

The white wolf revealed its fierce fangs, grinning menacingly.

“If there’s a day when you see the fierce side of this Exorcist, that would be quite amusing.”

“No way. I wouldn’t portray fierce expressions during the growth of my child.”

My mother and the white wolf appeared to be forming some kind of connection.

Not yet, it’s too early to give up.

I can still have it killed now.

I confessed my weakness already, and my mother could dispose of this beast right away.

“But you know, I’m really at ease.”

In front of me, breathing heavily as I tried to seize an opportunity against the white wolf, my mother casually began to speak.

“Meril-chan, you’re targeted by quite a few demons, right? Having such a sharp-nosed friend like this is really reassuring.”

I froze instantly.

“Mama…? What did you just say? I’m targeted…?”

“That’s right. Since I’ve earned a lot of resentment, it’s only natural that my daughter, Meril-chan, is targeted, right? Even now…”

Smiling, my mother gazed up at the sky.

In the distant blue sky, something with wings seemed to quickly hide within the clouds.

“So… right, Meril-chan? You shouldn’t say too careless things because you never know who might be listening.”

With a finger pressed to her lips, my mother smiled somewhat coldly.

Perhaps…Does my mother already know? That I have no power.

“I’m glad you have such a reliable friend, Meril-chan.”

“Hmph… I don’t think this girl needs my assistance…”

I could already sense my teeth chattering.

Even if I seek help, my mother might not assist me.

My resolute mother insists I should ‘stand on my own.’

Without my mother’s support, I must navigate life independently, akin to a lion nudging its cub into the abyss.

I felt a strong dizziness, clutched my head in distress, and ultimately, in a fit of recklessness…

“To celebrate the success of my first mission, I’m bringing together skilled chefs from across the capital for a lavish party today! Mama will cover all the expenses!!”

I decided to eat dinner to my heart’s content today.
