The Real Daughter Just Wants to Pilot Mechas - Chapter 141
“I don’t know when he’ll wake up. Maybe… maybe you should head back first?” Yan Yunkui stood beside Jiang Momo with his hands in his pockets, glancing at the rapidly stabilizing data on the nearby panel as he tried to persuade her.
Jiang Momo shook her head. “It’s still early. I don’t have much going on lately anyway.”
“Well, alright then.” Seeing that she couldn’t be swayed, Yan Yunkui quietly shuffled half a step away.
Jiang Momo cast him a sidelong glance. She had been too rushed before to think it through, but now that things were calmer, she couldn’t stop replaying the worried look on Yan Yunkui’s face when she first arrived. It made her think more deeply.
“What is it?” Yan Yunkui finally couldn’t ignore her stare any longer and asked.
Jiang Momo thought for a moment. “If we didn’t have that material, would the risk of backlash for Yan Chang be high?”
Yan Yunkui paused for a moment. “…Very high.”
“But you don’t seem particularly anxious. Did you find the buyer from the previous auction who bought the material?” Jiang Momo asked.
“No.” Yan Yunkui straightened up and let out a sigh.
“Then why?” Jiang Momo was genuinely curious. He’d looked worried, sure, but not remorseful.
He didn’t seem at all guilty about failing to properly assess the risks before the treatment.
Yan Yunkui was silent for a long while. “I can’t say.”
Though Yan Chang was still officially the head of the Yan family, his physical condition had already seriously affected the trust others had in him. The defect didn’t just hinder his development; it clearly impacted his mental state too. He had been mentally frozen at sixteen.
Yan Chang had once told him that in less than a year, he probably wouldn’t be able to hold back the elders in the Yan family anymore. That made the treatment urgent. The fact that Jiang Momo still had that energy core on hand was a stroke of luck and they had no time to slowly evaluate the risks of the treatment.
Before going to Jiang Momo, Yan Chang had said that if the treatment couldn’t cure him, then death would be a better ending.
He had also confessed that after being betrayed by a ‘friend’ years ago, he’d already prepared to lose power. In recent years, he had been gradually relinquishing control, hoping to find a way to survive without relying on the Yan family. He even bought a spot at the Central Mecha Academy to try living like a normal person and see if he could support himself on his own.
Yan Yunkui sighed again, glancing at a recent message from Ling Yelin who had just found the buyer from the previous auction. Ling Yelin said that if Yan Chang truly needed it, he’d personally negotiate to buy it back.
But Yan Yunkui closed his eyes and declined the offer.
In theory, the Yan family and the Ling family had little conflicting interest. But outsiders were convinced that two ancient clans like them couldn’t possibly be as civil as they seemed. That suspicion made certain meddling opportunists try to play both sides.
Especially after that incident, Ling Yelin had ended up shouldering an inexplicable sense of guilt, unintentionally diminishing himself in front of Yan Chang. Since then, he’d kept his distance to avoid appearing overly eager or intrusive.
Seeing the complex pain on Yan Yunkui’s face, Jiang Momo understood that there was a large, tangled story behind it and chose not to press further.
Day turned to night, then back to day again, but Yan Chang still showed no signs of waking. Jiang Momo leaned over the panel that Yan Yunkui had been watching, carefully staring at the quickly flashing data she didn’t understand, and asked, “Didn’t you say he was stabilized?”
With heavy dark circles under his eyes, Yan Yunkui gave her a tired side glance. “He is stable. We’re just waiting for him to wake up.”
“When will he wake up?” Jiang Momo asked.
“…Do you not need rest or something? How are you still so energetic after staying up two days?” Yan Yunkui asked.
“I’m used to it.” Jiang Momo scratched her face. Just then, the light brain on her wrist flashed.
Yan Yunkui looked like he’d seen salvation. “Someone’s contacting you! If you’ve got something to do, just go ahead. I’ve got things covered here.”
He hadn’t dared rest the past two days since Jiang Momo didn’t leave. There were too many delicate instruments in the room. If anything got broken, it would be difficult to repair. And as for outright kicking Jiang Momo out…
He glanced at her upper arm, which was thicker than his calf, and swallowed the words about forcing her to leave.
His eyes shifted left and right instinctively. Well, it made sense, didn’t it? She had such a precious treasure in the room. Of course she couldn’t bear to leave.
Jiang Momo ignored his attempt to change the subject and glanced at her light brain screen. She suddenly stood up and looked up, saying, “A representative from Yan Chang’s legal team contacted me. He said Yan Chang instructed them to help Professor Ge appeal his case but the timing isn’t right yet. They want to know if they should wait a few more days or file now!”
“Professor Ge?” Yan Yunkui was momentarily stunned.
Who was that?
Somewhat confused, he explained, “Before coming here, Yan Chang did make final arrangements for certain matters. This must be one of them.”
“Final arrangements?” Now it was Jiang Momo’s turn to be stunned. “What do you mean, final arrangements?”
“I’ve worked in this field too long, it just slipped out,” Yan Yunkui’s expression sharpened as he quickly deflected with a laugh.
At the time, Yan Chang had planned to transfer 10% of his personal assets, namely, several properties on the Floating Island 3, to Jiang Momo. Yan Yunkui had talked him out of it. Looking back now, he realized he shouldn’t have interfered. Judging by how much Jiang Momo cared about Yan Chang, those properties meant nothing in comparison.
Jiang Momo still felt something was off but she could tell how firm Yan Yunkui’s stance was. She didn’t show any doubt on her face and instead secretly sent a message to the lawyer who’d contacted her.
[Jiang Momo]: Did Yan Chang give me anything else?
[Lawyer Wang of the Xinghe Law Firm]: Yes, he transferred five properties on the Floating Island 3 to you.
[Jiang Momo]: Were there any conditions for the transfer to take effect?
[Lawyer Wang of the Xinghe Law Firm]: The properties were officially registered in your name a few days ago. Didn’t you receive a notification?
