Once Lu Feng and the others had fully disappeared, the group huddling in the corner came back to life. They rushed over, formed a circle, and lifted Jiang Momo up, tossing her into the air.

“Long live Teacher Momo!”

“We just signed the new contracts! We’re officially military employees now!”

“They said they’ll give us a Lifetime Achievement Award! And lots of bonus money!”

“We’ll finally get to take turns going on vacation! Home, we’re going home!”

Jiang Momo was tossed into the air several times, each time caught steadily. Her tense muscles slowly relaxed. She lifted her head slightly and, as she rose into the air again, her eyes met someone standing off in the corner.

Because of Yan Chang’s situation yesterday, she’d been worried he might react badly to the newly produced energy core. When she learned the treatment would take at least twenty-four hours, she had no choice but to skip attending Ge Qing’s trial in person and watch online instead. At the same time, she contacted Lu Feng and arranged for him to bring Ge Qing into the research lab immediately after the sentencing.

“Sorry, Professor Ge, something came up and I couldn’t make it to the trial.” Once the excited crowd finally put her down, Jiang Momo quickly walked over to Ge Qing and lowered her head apologetically.

She had hesitated for a long time before starting Yan Chang’s treatment. He’d known about Ge Qing’s court date too and had even told her it would be okay to wait. But Jiang Momo couldn’t risk it. There was no telling how fast the military might notice the missing energy core. The President had already issued orders and the military was bound to re-inventory and investigate. It was only a matter of time.

She had considered using the energy core later when the low-level legendary mechas went on public sale. But Yan Yunkui had said that anything weaker than the one they used previously wouldn’t be effective. Otherwise, the small animals he kept in the basement would have shown results long ago.

Ge Qing looked down at the bowed head and patted the top of her hair. “It’s alright. I knew something urgent must’ve come up. Our Momo wouldn’t bail on someone without a reason. Is it all settled now?”

Jiang Momo nodded hard. “Everything is settled.”

Ge Qing smiled. “That’s good then.”

He had been sentenced to ten years in court and had left with a heavy heart, but also relief. Thank goodness he’d taken the fall. If Jiang Momo had been locked away for years, it would’ve been a tragic waste of talent. He couldn’t stand to see a genius fade into obscurity.

But he hadn’t expected that after leaving the courthouse, the destination of the air shuttle wasn’t prison but the First Military District’s research lab. The moment the researchers there heard he was Jiang Momo’s mentor, they crowded over in excitement. He hadn’t been looked at with such pure admiration in years. He played it cool for a moment… then launched into storytelling mode about Jiang Momo’s achievements.

He’d barely gotten started when a group of deadly serious people kicked the research lab’s doors open and stormed in.

Snapping out of the memory, Ge Qing looked at the kid in front of him with pride. “They all admire you.”

“Ah,” Jiang Momo responded awkwardly.

She felt deeply ashamed. Ever since stepping into the research lab, she could tell from the atmosphere how much pressure they’d all been under while dealing with the military. Yet clearly, not one of them had tried to shift the blame onto her. No one had even suggested the energy core might’ve been taken.

Ge Qing chuckled. “You said you’d explain mecha manufacturing to me once I got out. I thought you meant out of prison, but turns out it was just out of court.”

Jiang Momo pressed her lips together.

“Don’t be upset,” Ge Qing reassured her. “Working under you isn’t much different from being out in the world. Will you show me the core of the legendary mecha?”

The surrounding researchers watched the two for a while. Seeing that Jiang Momo really didn’t have time to pay attention to them, they exchanged glances, then suppressed their excitement, and quietly got back to work.

When they saw the two moved to leave, Scarface volunteered to approach, handing Ge Qing a stack of documents. “Professor, here are our experimental records. Do you want a briefing?”

“Thank you.”

Ge Qing began flipping through the pages one by one, while Scarface started talking nonstop beside him. Jiang Momo sat nearby, listened for a bit, and then yawned.

Jiang Momo wasn’t sure when her eyes had closed. By the time she opened them again, Ge Qing had just finished reading the last document. Neither of them had noticed she’d fallen asleep and Scarface was still going all out praising Jiang Momo, trying to leave a lasting impression.

“It’s amazing. I’ve heard that during the Alien Beast War, a lot of our equipment was developed by studying the alien beasts. It’s such a shame so much of it has been lost.” Ge Qing handed the documents back to Scarface and looked at Jiang Momo. “The ancients really were wise.”

“Exactly! Totally! Word is that our popular spatial device today was inspired by spatial-type alien beasts, though the official sources keep that hidden.” Scarface slapped his thigh, eager to impress the dean.

“Spatial-type alien beasts?” Jiang Momo looked puzzled. “Why haven’t I seen one?”

“Well, you not seeing one is pretty…” normal.

Scarface blurted out half a sarcastic remark before cutting himself off instantly.

“I mean, that’s just what I heard. Officially, there’s no such claim in the Central Star System.”

Jiang Momo rested her chin on one hand, not really listening to the end of Scarface’s explanation as she was already deep in thought.

If the alien beasts have spatial ability, then that could explain the mysterious alien beasts suddenly appearing on the Capital Star.

She opened her light brain and sent a message to Lu Feng.

[Jiang Momo]: Lieutenant General Lu, do we have spatial-type alien beasts?

There was no reply.

Jiang Momo waited for a while and still got nothing. So she set Lu Feng as a priority contact and closed the light brain interface.

***

At midnight that night, a bombshell announcement exploded on the Star Network.

[The Federal Military will officially release legendary mechas (low-level) at midnight tonight.]

By the time the news was posted, Jiang Momo was already lying in bed, blankly staring at her chat window with Lu Feng, still waiting for a reply. Then the news pop-up appeared.

“They’re already releasing it?” Jiang Momo sat up and tapped the purchase link, only to see it marked as sold out.

She glanced at the time. “It’s only been seven seconds. How many units did the Federation release?”

[Two. Both were intercepted by the military,] Little Eight’s voice drifted out calmly.

Jiang Momo was confused. “Why?”

[Because the President wanted them released, but the military’s high command doesn’t want so many civilians entering the system.]

Jiang Momo understood. “So they think if they don’t release the legendary mechas publicly, no one can pilot them, which means they won’t need to identify capable pilots for mid- or high-level units. That way, they can avoid bringing in all kinds of outsiders and bloating the organization?”

[That’s pretty much it.]

Jiang Momo was stunned. “That’s blatant defiance. Won’t the President find out right away?”
