- Chapter 79 - Extra Chapter I: Obsession (Bai Fan’s Perspective)
If one were to use colored words to describe his past life, the first things Bai Fan thought of were darkness, dust, and scarlet…
Even his monarch, Zhu Jiuyin, once sighed and said, “Bai Fan, your entire heart is rotten, and your bone marrow is filled with viciousness and malice.”
This was by no means a compliment, but Bai Fan never cared. He was hypocritical and shameless, unscrupulous in committing every imaginable evil, from killing husbands to slaying brothers, but what did it matter? As long as he kept growing stronger and crushed those who judged him into the dirt, who would still care about the process?
Meeting Bai Meng was an accident. That day in the forest, that white, soft little thing appeared, his eyes seemingly filled with starlight. He was a small ball of fluff, and his voice was soft and gentle. His snow-white fur glistened with a radiant sheen. In that pitch-black place, it looked like a glowing star, so dazzlingly bright, yet so unrestrainedly free.
It was love at first sight.
So he decided to capture him, even if the other belonged to freedom.
Capturing a true heart was not so difficult. If a dragon truly intended to seduce someone, no one could resist the allure. And so he succeeded, turning that little Tuanzi into his star.
Then Tuanzi died. His star vanished.
Perhaps his arrogance had been too blatant, unbearable even to the heavens. Yet with no way to punish him directly, all his sins were transferred onto Tuanzi, and karmic backlash began.
From getting to know each other to holding hands and never letting go, they had never argued. They always understood each other with just a glance. Tuanzi’s lips were always curled in a smile—joyful, content, and sometimes playfully coquettish—and his obsidian eyes were always gleaming.
And someone destroyed that.
In the end, Bai Fan had miscalculated. There are no secrets that can remain hidden forever. He had countless enemies. That day, when he left, it was just like any other. The delicate youth stood obediently on the mountaintop to see him off. But when he returned, the figure was gone. Bai Fan frowned and searched, only to find the youth leaning against a tree deep in the forest.
“Xiao Bai.”
Bai Fan called softly, gently. But there was no response. He had no choice but to walk over. And in the next second, he froze, as if witnessing something unbelievable.
The bloodstains in front of Bai Meng had already dried. A gaping hole had been carved into his body, the place where his dantian had been now completely hollow. Even his humanoid form was being forcibly held together by someone’s yao energy.
They only wanted Bai Fan to suffer.
Bai Fan couldn’t even bear to imagine what Tuanzi had endured.
His hands trembled as he gathered him into his arms. Bai Meng’s body was already cold, reeking of blood.
The chill spread from Bai Fan’s limbs to his veins, while the beast in his heart gnawed relentlessly. His chest felt like it had been torn open and left to bleed.
The youth who once always wore a smile could smile no longer. His pale lips could no longer make a sound.
They had promised each other so many futures.
But the youth would never grow up again.
He was not willing to accept this…
He had only wanted to be together. Just being together was enough. Whether poor or rich, in misery or on the run, he could accept anything as long as they were together…
Why couldn’t fate spare Xiao Bai…
He hid the youth’s body so that not even Xiao Hei could find them again. Every night, Bai Fan would follow the faint traces of yao energy to hunt down the perpetrators. He crushed their inner cores, broke their limbs, and threw them into anthills. Bai Fan would smile calmly as he listened to their screams. And during the day, he held Bai Meng’s body and fell asleep.
He hadn’t dreamed for a long time, until one night, he dreamed again. In the dream, the youth appeared, lively and radiant as he once was. At that moment, however, Bai Fan seemed to be in a hurry to leave. Just before leaving, he turned to look back at the youth. The sunlight happened to filter through the gaps in the leaves, falling softly on Bai Meng’s face. His clear eyes shimmered like a pool of spring water, holding the shattered warmth of the world, and weariness lingered at the corners of his lips.
“I’ll wait for you to come home.”
“I’m back now…”
The morning sunlight refracted through his tears, stinging Bai Fan’s eyes. Upon waking, he held Bai Meng and muttered to himself, at times crying, at times laughing. That heart, shattered beyond repair, could no longer feel pain.
Bai Fan had gone mad.
When Xiao Hei arrived and saw everything, how could he not understand what had happened? He struck Bai Fan hard, eyes bloodshot, and shouted, “You really are useless…”
Bai Fan showed no reaction.
“Since things have come to this, there’s still one way…” Xiao Hei released him, his gaze wild as he looked toward the distant sky. His voice was low, audible only to the two of them,
“The Kunlun Mirror of the mortal world can reverse time and alter fate…”
A flicker appeared in Bai Fan’s eyes. His dead heart suddenly began to struggle.
Zhu Jiuyin, as a hegemon and immortal deity, carried the pride of a ruler. How could he possibly lend a divine artifact to a mere yaoguai?
So Bai Fan took a desperate risk and stole it with Qilin’s help.
But Heaven does not bow to man. The act was soon exposed, inciting the wrath of the gods. Zhu Jiuyin led a force to reduce them to dust. Under divine punishment, the Qilin perished, Bai Fan suffered grave injuries, and enemies were in pursuit from behind.
Xiao Bai was so close…
It’s alright…
Bai Fan smiled as he pulled out his inner core. Tear after tear fell onto the unresponsive youth’s face.
“This is so pathetic… Would you look down on me for it…?”
His slender hand turned into a claw and stabbed into himself. It tore through his skin and seized the beautiful, golden orb laced with blood from within his body. He carefully placed it into the youth’s body…
“It hurts so much. My heart hurts even more. Xiao Bai, do you know that…”
He drew out his own spine. The intense pain corroded his senses, twisting his handsome face in agony. Yet his dim golden pupils never stopped staring at the youth.
Covered in wounds, the young man used his final strength to hide the body. Blood slid from his forehead into his eyes, blurring his vision. Without his spine, he collapsed crookedly to the ground, and before him stood a crowd shrouded in darkness, discussing how to execute him.
Perhaps Bai Fan’s obsession ran too deep, so much so that even his former master looked at him askance. This dragon was sinister and venomous, vengeful to the extreme. Yet now, for the sake of a mere little yao, he had become obsessed, almost demonic, humbling himself completely.
“Your fate begins with you, and it shall end with you.”
The god looked down from his lofty height, his gaze icy as he stared at Bai Fan as one might an ant.
“Enter reincarnation and face your punishment. Your love shall always be unrequited. Your fate shall end in suffering. Born in resentment, die in solitude. A life cursed by the heavens…”
That cold voice grew ever more distant in Bai Fan’s ears, and his vision had long since blurred. He murmured inaudible words, eyes fixed stubbornly in one direction, where his most treasured possession was hidden.
“I like you… Did you know that…?”
I love you. You must know that.
“I may not be able to stay with you anymore…”
I’ve died. Luckily, you didn’t know…
“I know.”
A clear voice of the youth came from afar. Mo Hankui slowly opened his tired eyes in the darkness. It seemed like he had just woken from a nightmare, and now that dream was over. He saw his youth stepping into the light, his eyes carrying the most familiar brilliance.
“Now, let’s go home.”
His star had finally found him. That person was all his light. His presence swept away all past darkness and gloom. No matter what had happened or what lay ahead, as long as he was there, it would be enough. The path was already lit.
At last, he had found his light.
