Chapter 9: A Walking Mouthpiece

After bidding farewell to Lu Tianlang, Ye Jin got back into the car.

She said to the driver, Brother Zhong, let’s go.

The driver had inherited Gu Chenxi’s preference for silence and started the vehicle without a word.

Beside her, Gu Chenxi was resting with his eyes closed.

Ye Jin connected her phone to the car’s audio system and began playing some financial news.

Gu Chenxi had always made a habit of reading financial news, browsing through them during leisurely car rides. Ye Jin had reminded him yesterday that this could strain his eyes, so today she had prepared audio versions to play instead.

In terms of work capability, Ye Jin was truly an excellent executive assistant.

And her verbal skills were equally impressive.

Gu Chenxi’s perennial silence often caused difficulties in advancing work beyond the internal operations of the headquarters.

During these recent business trip days, having Ye Jin by Gu Chenxi’s side was like having a walking mouthpiece.

She excelled at considering issues from Gu Chenxi’s perspective, then conveying them in the tone of an executive assistant.

Singlehandedly handling both offense and defense.

Gu Chenxi only needed to preside by her side, controlling the entire situation effortlessly with mere nods or shakes of his head.

Employees like Ye Jin were extremely rareimpossible to hire even with money.

So to retain her, Gu Chenxi tried to tolerate as much as possible in many nonwork matters.

President Gu, Ye Jin suddenly said beside him, Is your shirt expensive to dry clean? Can I have the company reimburse it?

The white shirt she was wearing belonged to Gu Chenxi.

Earlier at the dinner table, a business partner who found Ye Jin obstructive had bribed a waiter to spill red wine on her shirt, hoping to make her leave.

Ye Jin did indeed leave.

But in less than ten minutes, she returned wearing spare clothes from Gu Chenxi’s car.

Not only had the other party failed in their scheme, but Ye Jin had also seized upon this mistake.

Thus successfully reclaiming one percentage point in the contract.

Hearing her question, Gu Chenxi turned to look at her, then gently nodded in agreement.

Ye Jin stood nearly 170 cm tall with an excellent bone structure that carried clothes well.

Now wearing Gu Chenxi’s white shirt, there wasn’t the slightest hint of incongruityinstead, it had a relaxed, oversized feel. Her wrists and palms were hidden by the overly long sleeves, revealing only a few beautifully slender fingers.

This brand of shirt was one Gu Chenxi frequently wore, so he knew exactly how it looked on himself.

The comparison suddenly made Gu Chenxi aware of their physical difference.

Ye Jin was actually this slender.

It was with this same body that she had easily lifted water containers that male colleagues couldn’t move.

Thinking this, Gu Chenxi suddenly realized he had been gazing at her for too long. He immediately averted his eyes.

After the financial news compiled by Ye Jin finished playing, the car fell into silence again.

The vehicle moved steadily forwardthe journey from the neighboring province back to their city would take at least two and a half hours.

Ye Jin’s eyes grew distant as she mentally rehearsed video scripts.

And thought about her electronic pet.

Since the business trip began, Ye Jin had no work handovers with Yan Rong whatsoever.

Yan Rong also seemed to have abandoned that account, never replying to her again.

Ye Jin was so absorbed in her thoughts that she completely failed to notice Gu Chenxi glancing at her once, then again a moment later.

He clearly wanted to say something, but unfortunately his language module was completely blank, leaving him with nothing to say.

Gu Chenxi thought for a moment and opened Yan Rong’s account.

Unlike Gu Chenxi’s reticence, Ye Jin always had endless things to talk about.

Despite being overwhelmed with work during this business trip, Ye Jin still managed to send emails to ‘Yan Rong’.

Gu Chenxi started reading from the earliest one.

Ye Jin to Yan Rong:

Being an executive assistant is truly inhuman work. No wonder you couldn’t handle it and ran away. Who wouldn’t run from this?

Ye Jin to Yan Rong:

I’m done for. The originally twoday business trip suddenly got extended to eight days. So exhausted, I wish I were dead.

Ye Jin to Yan Rong:

I checked the work records President Gu hasn’t been on a business trip for over a year… So he’s just exploiting me because he found me useful, right?

Blackhearted capitalist!

Reading this, Gu Chenxi almost couldn’t suppress his laughter.

He glanced sideways at Ye Jin.

During this business trip, Ye Jin had maintained an excellent work attitude, always smiling and highly competent in everything she did.

He never expected she had this side to her in private.

Gu Chenxi thought for a moment, then typed a reply.

Yan Rong to Ye Jin:

I’ll apply for a bonus and travel allowance for you.

Ye Jin’s phone chimed with a notification.

She took out her phone and saw that Yan Rong had suddenly appeared offering to get her a bonus.

Who doesn’t like money?

Although she couldn’t take it back to her world, it could still make her life more comfortable in this one.

Ye Jin happily typed back.

Ye Jin to Yan Rong:

Thank you (crossed out)

This is what I deserve, thank you.

After sending the message, Ye Jin habitually glanced toward Gu Chenxi.

She noticed he was using his tablet, holding it at a slight angle that happened to prevent her from seeing the screen.

A faint smile played on his lips.

Why was he in such a good mood all of a sudden?

…Did he find an online romance?

They returned to the city by 7 PM.

Their route back happened to pass by Gu Qingyang’s workplace, so Ye Jin suggested stopping by to see him.

Gu Chenxi didn’t object.

But when they arrived, he didn’t get out of the car.

Understanding the situation, Ye Jin got out alone and walked toward the industrial park.

Gu Qingyang worked at a logistics distribution center with massive warehouses, where he served as the general merchandise manager, overseeing the daily records of hundreds of tons of incoming and outgoing goods.

When Gu Qingyang heard Ye Jin was coming over the phone, he warmly welcomed her and gave her his exact location.

Ye Jin found the place using navigation, but almost didn’t recognize the smiling Gu Qingyang who greeted her.

The young master who used to wear exclusively highend custom suits was now dressed in cheap, ordinary work clothes.

His hair, once meticulously styled by professional hairdressers, was now covered in dust and tangled like dry weeds.

He looked every bit the image of the laboring masses.

But surprisingly, compared to his previous carefully crafted appearance, this natural look unexpectedly suited his temperament better, even seeming to elevate his attractiveness by a level.

He looked like a moderately handsome migrant worker.

Ye Jin asked, How did you end up like this?

Wasn’t he supposed to be a general manager? Why did he look no different from a loading dock worker?

Gu Qingyang said casually, Just helping them out when I can. The sooner we finish, the sooner we can clock out.

Ye Jin truly hadn’t expected that Young Master Gu, who normally never gave up until he achieved his goals, would have this side to him.

Gu Qingyang felt uncomfortable under Ye Jin’s scrutinizing gaze and asked, What brings you here all of a sudden?

Ye Jin: President Gu asked me to check on you.

Gu Qingyang immediately showed a disgusted expression: Don’t mention him to me.

…I wanted to come see you myself, alright?

Only then did Gu Qingyang’s expression improve slightly.

Ye Jin continued: I was passing by on my way back from a business trip and thought since I’m already here, I might as well check on how you’re doing and see if there’s anything you need help with.

Gu Qingyang said moved: I knew you were thinking of me.

Then, he pulled Ye Jin aside to make sure the working staff couldn’t hear them, and whispered: I suspect Gu Chenxi is deliberately messing with me.

Ye Jin was startled had he figured it out so quickly?

Ye Jin: What did you discover?

It couldn’t be more obvious.

Gu Qingyang lowered his voice further: The people here only call me manager in name, but they don’t let me handle any actual work. During meetings, they deliberately use terminology I don’t understand, and they won’t even show me the account books.

Gu Qingyang: I suspect Gu Chenxi is just fooling me giving me the title of general manager but having people sideline me. Don’t you think he’s purely messing with me?

After hearing this, Ye Jin:…

So she had overestimated him after all.

Actually, Ye Jin understood Gu Qingyang quite well.

Gu Qingyang thought this way not because he was stupid, but because he habitually saw Gu Chenxi as an enemy, so he naturally attributed all bad things to Gu Chenxi.

Ye Jin wasn’t in a hurry to explain for Gu Chenxi.

She nodded: I understand. Tomorrow I’ll have them move the account books to your office. From now on, all goods entering and leaving must have your signature, otherwise no one can move anything. Will that work?

As Ye Jin slowly said these words, Gu Qingyang’s eyes gradually lit up.

The way he looked at Ye Jin now was like looking at the Goddess of Mercy who relieves suffering.

I knew you could help me. Gu Qingyang said excitedly, Wait for me. Once I establish myself here, we’ll join forces and gradually overthrow Gu Chenxi step by step.

Ye Jin:…

Was it appropriate to include her in this power seizure?

But since Gu Qingyang had already said this much, Ye Jin could only go along: Good luck.

Yeah! Good luck.

Gu Qingyang scratched his head: There’s one more thing I want to ask you.

Ye Jin: Go ahead.

Gu Qingyang: I think the employees’ salaries here are too low. They work themselves to death every day but only get three to four thousand a month. After I gain real authority, I want to raise their salaries. Do you think that’s feasible?

Ye Jin: You’re already the general manager. You can make that decision yourself.

Gu Qingyang was actually quite kindhearted.

Just kind to the point of being somewhat naive, not understanding how treacherous people could be.

Hearing Gu Qingyang say this, Ye Jin’s heart softened a little, and she asked with humanistic concern: Since you were parachuted in here, has anyone bullied you?

Of course there was exclusion at first. Gu Qingyang said, But everything’s fine now. They even bring me lunch.

Of course they do.

Ye Jin thought to herself.

They thought someone was sent from headquarters to investigate, so they were naturally wary and resistant.

But soon they discovered Gu Qingyang was easy to fool, so their attitude definitely changed.

Starting tomorrow, after she helped Gu Qingyang gain real authority where all goods movement required his signature, Gu Qingyang would easily discover their loopholes.

At that point, it wouldn’t just be about ostracizing Gu Qingyang anymore.

Ye Jin couldn’t bear to tell him this harsh truth, merely patting his shoulder heavily before bidding farewell and leaving.

Three days later, as expected, trouble erupted on Gu Qingyang’s end.

Ye Jin was awakened by a phone call late at night and immediately got up to change clothes.

The Border Collie, disturbed by the noise, trotted into the master bedroom to check.

System: What’s happening?]

While multitasking, Ye Jin gave the dog a pat on the head: Gu Qingyang’s in troublehe’s at the police station now. The warehouse also exploded, and firefighters are putting out the blaze.

…Isn’t this exactly the same as the plot?!]

Ye Jin: Everything’s under control. Don’t worry, just stay home and behave.

She patted the dog’s head again.

System: …

It really felt like she was treating it as a pet.

It was the toptier auxiliary system, after all!

I guess that’s all we can do.] The system deflated, I can’t help with anything right now.]

Who says that.

Ye Jin would be the first to disagree if anyone claimed the system was useless.

She quickly washed her face and was now bending over in the entryway to put on her shoes.

The clueless Border Collie came over as well.

Ye Jin continued stroking its head, smiling cheerfully: The new video already has over thirty thousand likesall thanks to you.

…So she really was using it as a mascot.

Gu Chenxi’s car was already waiting at the entrance of her residential complex.

Ye Jin got into the car while replying to work messages.

Mr. Gu, Ye Jin reported, I just confirmed with the staff therethe fire wasn’t major and is basically under control. The firefighters are now investigating the cause.

Gu Chenxi, hands on the steering wheel, nodded in acknowledgment.

In front of the police station, the lowprofile black Bentley came to a gradual stop.

Gu Chenxi, dressed in a black suit, almost blended into the night.

As he stepped toward the station, he glanced back and noticed Ye Jin still standing there, gazing at the national emblem on the sign with a somewhat emotional expression.

Noticing Gu Chenxi’s gaze, Ye Jin explained, It suddenly struck me how oddly connected we are to the police station.

Every time something happened, they ended up here.

Gu Chenxi remained silent as usual, waiting for Ye Jin to finish her moment of reflection.

Let’s go. Ye Jin caught up, speaking lightly, This should be over quickly.

The moment they entered the police station, a wave of noise assaulted them.

Gu Qingyang looked just as disheveled as he had during his last meeting with Ye Jin.

He was currently engaged in a heated argument with several similarly dressed individuals, too absorbed to notice Ye Jin and Gu Chenxi’s arrival.

Unaccustomed to the high decibel level, Gu Chenxi frowned slightly and followed behind Ye Jin.

Ye Jin approached an officer: Hello, we’re family of the suspect.

The officer glanced at Ye Jin in her casual, loose clothing, then at Gu Chenxi in his sharp suit, and asked skeptically, Both of you?

He’s the family member.

Ye Jin stepped aside to reveal Gu Chenxi behind her and introduced, He’s also the owner of the company involved in the incident. I’m his assistantYe Jin.

The officer nodded in understanding and was about to speak when the noisy crowd suddenly noticed Gu Chenxi.

Mr. Gu is here!

The speaker, who had been quiet until now, perked up at the sight of Gu Chenxi: Come on, let’s take our case to Mr. Gu.

Immediately, the group surged toward them.

Gu Qingyang also spotted Ye Jin and Gu Chenxi at that moment, his face instantly turning grim.

President Gu, you be the judge of this matter!

They quickly swarmed in front of Gu Chenxi, their faces still flushed with residual anger.

Although they were at the police station, being this close risked escalating into physical conflict.

Ye Jin immediately stepped in front of Gu Chenxi to maintain distance while soothing them, Let’s talk this through properly. President Gu is here today specifically to help resolve the issue.

The opposing party immediately accused, The new manager made a mistake in his work, but not only did he refuse to admit it, he even burned down the warehouse to cover it up.

That’s bullshit!

Though Gu Qingyang hadn’t approached, his voice carried sharp clarity, The warehouse is a nofire zone. I even quit smoking for that reason. If you can find a single match on me, I’ll admit defeat.

The commotion instantly reignited.

Just as Ye Jin prepared to mediate further, Gu Chenxi gripped her shoulder and pulled her behind him.

Gu Chenxi was tall, and standing protectively in front of her now felt profoundly reassuring.

Ye Jin immediately went to summon police officers to control the situation.

To prevent further conflict, everyone was separated into different holding areas, finally restoring some quiet to the police station.

Ye Jin then learned they’d been brought in because someone had reported a group assault.

Gu Qingyang turned out to be the one who’d been beaten.

Given the severity of this incidentboth the fire and the assaultwe’ve decided to combine the investigations, the police explained.

Ye Jin responded, Perhaps you should formally open a case instead. I have some materials I’d like to submit to the police.

The officer immediately grew serious. What materials?

Regarding embezzlement and smuggling, Ye Jin stated calmly. President Gu suspects someone at the distribution center has been exploiting their position to steal company goods and transport national contraband. Gu Qingyang was specifically assigned by President Gu to investigate this matter.

Since her primary goal was to secure Gu Qingyang’s release, she continued, Moreover, Gu Qingyang holds 24% shares in the distribution center. As a major shareholder, he has absolutely no motive to destroy his own assets.

With just a few sentences, she had completely cleared Gu Qingyang of suspicion.

The officer said, I’ll need to verify what you’ve told me.

Ye Jin asked, Can Gu Qingyang be released now?

Yes, the officer nodded. Wait here. I’ll bring him over.

Just like that, the matter was resolved.

Ye Jin breathed a sigh of relief, thinking the system’s task wasn’t so difficult after all.

But soon, Ye Jin realized she’d celebrated too soon.

Gu Qingyang had suffered significant agitation that night, leaving him as volatile as a powder keg. The moment he entered the room and saw Gu Chenxi signing documents, he exploded.

Get out, Gu Qingyang snapped rudely. I don’t need your hypocritical act here.

Ye Jin asked, Aren’t we leaving? Do you plan to spend the night here?

Before Gu Qingyang could respond, the office door opened again.

Lu Tianlang entered with a smile, asking cheerfully, Who’s planning to spend the night here?

This crucial third major shareholder had clearly been summoned by Gu Qingyang.

Uncle Lu.

Gu Qingyang addressed him politely, but his tone turned venomous when he spoke to Gu Chenxi, See? You’re not needed here. Get lost.

Lu Tianlang stood with his hands behind his back, his gaze shifting thoughtfully between Gu Chenxi and Gu Qingyang.

Then he asked with a smile, Assistant Ye, what’s going on here?
