Chapter 3: Better Off Not Speaking

Sit, lie down, roll over!

Oh, what an adorable Border Collie! It can even perform tricks, a passing girl exclaimed, captivated by the dog’s little routine. She glanced around and asked curiously, Where’s your owner? Why are you alone here?

Quick, shake her hand.

The dog extended its paw toward the girl.

Wow! You want to shake hands! So well-behaved! The girl delightedly shook the dog’s front paw, her fondness instantly soaring.

She looked up and noticed a convenience store nearby. Wait here for me, okay? she said.

The girl went into the store and bought two sausages at the counter.

Buying these for the dog outside? the cashier asked as he scanned the items.

Yeah, the girl nodded.

That dog’s been sitting out there all morning. It’s clever—every day it performs tricks for passersby to get them to buy sausages, the cashier said, tilting his chin toward the door. Go on out, it’ll definitely be waiting for you.

After paying, the girl stepped outside.

Sure enough, the Border Collie was already crouched by the entrance, staring intently at the sausages in her hand.

You’re just too smart, the girl couldn’t help but marvel.

Of course! The voice, audible only to the dog, replied proudly, I’m the ultimate support system—there’s no host in this world I can’t assist.

Even if the host was a dog, it could manage perfectly well.

But.

Thinking of the unfortunate circumstances, the system sighed wearily.

Still, humans and dogs weren’t quite the same.

If not for this mishap, it would have already teamed up with Ye Jin to tackle missions.

As a world maintenance system, its job was to find specialists suited for traveling to Another world to fix bugs.

The current world was derived from a million-word CEO romance novel.

As for how such a story could stretch to a million words? Simple—every character in the book refused to communicate.

They misunderstood each other, over and over—you misunderstood me, I misunderstood them, misunderstandings piling upon misunderstandings until the system nearly forgot what the word even meant.

Eventually, some plotline went awry, the story collapsed into a mess, and it ended in an irreparable deadlock.

The system’s mission was to untangle this knot and guide the story toward a perfect ending.

After months of searching across countless worlds, it finally selected Ye Jin, convinced she was the one for the job.

At that time, Ye Jin happened to be down on her luck, stranded on the streets with nothing. Seeing this as the perfect opportunity, the system made its move.

But it never expected that even in her despair, Ye Jin couldn’t resist patting a dog’s head nearby.

So, due to a recognition error, the system ended up linked to the dog.

Now, the human, the dog, and the system had all crossed into this world.

Forget about fixing bugs and completing missions—survival itself had become a challenge.

In the blink of an eye, the dog finished the sausages.

It licked its lips, trotted to a corner, and lay down to rest.

Don’t sleep! We still need to find Ye Jin. The system urged, Let’s go now—we might find her by this afternoon.

But this Border Collie was too clever for its own good, and whether it cooperated or not depended entirely on its mood.

After much coaxing and persuasion from the system, this canine lord finally rose leisurely and headed in the direction specified by the system.

Ye Jin had been out on fieldwork all morning and had successfully handled the matter.

In the afternoon, she finally waited for the belated arrival of Gu Qingyang.

It was already past four in the afternoon when Gu Qingyang, as usual, passed by Ye Jin.

Ye Jin stood up directly and stopped him, getting straight to the point: The matter you requested has been handled as instructed by President Gu. It’s in the underground garage. Follow me.

Gu Qingyang halted in his tracks.

He looked Ye Jin up and down with interest, remarking curiously, You can speak?

Aren’t the people in this company all pretending to be mute like Gu Chenxi?

How novel.

Ye Jin ignored his comment and walked straight outside.

Gu Qingyang had originally come today intending to continue making a scene, tormenting Gu Chenxi until he handed over the money.

But now.

Gu Qingyang glanced toward the office, then at Ye Jin’s retreating figure. After hesitating for a few seconds, he ultimately followed Ye Jin.

On the way to the underground garage, Gu Qingyang asked Ye Jin, You just said Gu Chenxi bought me a car? How much did it cost?

Ye Jin held up two fingers.

Gu Qingyang was somewhat skeptical and confirmed, Two thousand?

Ye Jin nodded.

More or less.

Gu Qingyang was taken in and believed her.

But soon he raised another doubt: How would Gu Chenxi know what I want to buy? And what kind of supercar? Available for pickup on the same day?

Ye Jin chose her words carefully: A convertible. Very eye-catching. Suitable for someone like you.

This sparked endless imagination in Gu Qingyang.

Apollo or McLaren P1? Hey, Pagani isn’t bad either, Gu Qingyang mused to himself. Fine if it’s under twenty million. It’s not like Gu Chenxi being stingy is anything new. He can just transfer the remaining money to my card.

Ye Jin remained silent, not responding.

Because she didn’t recognize any of the supercars Gu Qingyang mentioned.

When they reached the garage.

Gu Qingyang craned his neck, looking around eagerly, and quickened his pace.

Where’s the car? Gu Qingyang asked. Where did you park it?

Then he complained, Your speed bumps here are way too high. Supercars have such low ground clearance. How am I supposed to drive it out of here?

Ye Jin continued calmly without responding.

She led Gu Qingyang to the vehicle, took out the keys, pressed the unlock button twice, and placed the keys in Gu Qingyang’s hand.

Gu Qingyang was completely dumbfounded.

Where’s the supercar?

Did I say anything about a supercar? Ye Jin began reeling him in.

Gu Qingyang felt he’d been played: You said it! Convertible! Eye-catching! Suitable for someone like me!

Ye Jin added, What I meant was: a convertible tricycle, suitable for someone like you whose license has been revoked. As for being eye-catching, I personally think this vehicle is quite eye-catching.

Gu Qingyang: Then you told me twenty million!

Ye Jin: It was two thousand. Two thousand six hundred ninety-nine yuan exactly.

…Damn!

Gu Qingyang couldn’t hold back a classic curse. You and Gu Chenxi are in cahoots to mess with me, aren’t you? You… you’re no good either.

He pointed at Ye Jin’s nose, gritting his teeth as he said:

You and Gu Chenxi! You’re both equally infuriating!

You’re birds of a feather!

In collusion with each other!

Partners in crime!

And here I was, thinking better of you earlier. Turns out you’re even worse than Gu Chenxi! You might as well have stayed mute!

In the blink of an eye, Ye Jin had surpassed Gu Chenxi to become the most disliked person in Gu Qingyang’s heart, temporarily ranking first.

Ye Jin felt no emotional fluctuation.

She had already noticed yesterday—this Gu Qingyang might seem fierce, but in reality, he was just a foolish son from a wealthy family, with no real threat.

After cursing a couple of times, Gu Qingyang turned to head upstairs, intending to continue making trouble for Gu Chenxi.

Hey. Ye Jin stopped him calmly, crossing her arms. I can solve your problem.

Gu Qingyang paused mid-step, stubbornly retorting, What problem could I possibly have?

After a long silence, Gu Qingyang still hadn’t heard Ye Jin say another word.

Gritting his teeth, he turned back, walking over angrily as he demanded, Damn Gu Chenxi, what has he been saying about me behind my back?

Ye Jin replied, Why would President Gu speak ill of you? He doesn’t even talk.

That made sense.

Actually, Gu Qingyang’s insistence on spending twenty million to buy a car had a simple reason.

His car had been wrecked, but he was part of a supercar club—a place where cars were everything.

Gu Qingyang cared about his reputation and didn’t want to be constantly mocked and looked down upon by the others, which was why he wanted to buy a new one.

How can you help me? Gu Qingyang questioned skeptically.

Get in the car, Ye Jin said simply.

You call this broken tricycle a car?

Ye Jin had to rephrase: Get in the broken tricycle.

It was like punching cotton.

Swallowing his pride, Gu Qingyang got into the tricycle and drove Ye Jin out of the underground garage.

The black-and-white Border Collie ambled slowly along the wall.

The system was frantic: Hurry up! We’re almost there.

But the Border Collie remained unfazed, sticking to its own pace. Only when the system grew unbearably pushy did it oblige with a brief trot.

Arriving downstairs at Ye Jin’s company, the system attempted a remote connection.

Bzzzt—crackle—zzzt—

Huh? Ye Jin glanced around, puzzled. Does an electric tricycle have a car radio?

The sound was close, almost as if it had drilled directly into her mind.

Up front, Gu Qingyang rolled his eyes. This piece of junk? No way.

Then why had she heard it…

Just as Ye Jin was wondering, the radio static faded away.

Late at night.

Ye Jin had Gu Qingyang drive her to the route frequently used by the club for street racing.

Why are we here? Gu Qingyang whispered, pulling his collar up to hide his face, unwilling to be recognized.

A sports car roared past beside them, so fast it left an afterimage, while Gu Qingyang’s two-thousand-dollar convertible tricycle could only manage thirty miles per hour at full throttle.

Ye Jin said, Give me your phone.

As she spoke, another sports car sped by.

Gu Qingyang quickly ducked behind the tricycle, not even bothering to ask why Ye Jin needed his phone, and handed it over.

Unable to contain his curiosity, he soon peeked out to see what she was doing.

Ye Jin generously showed him.

She had recorded a video of the racers, created a video account, and uploaded the footage.

Gu Qingyang read the caption word by word: D-o-e-s m-y c-a-r l-o-o-k g-o-o-d? — And you tagged the traffic police?!

Gu Qingyang finally understood her plan.

You’re really something.

While speechless, Gu Qingyang also felt a newfound respect for Ye Jin.

In just over an hour of interaction, he had come to realize that Ye Jin was definitely not someone to be trifled with.

The methods were far too ruthless.

Gu Qingyang suddenly backed down: …Maybe I should apologize to you first.

Hey, it’s all trivial matters.

Ye Jin had always been quite easygoing with him, and her appearance naturally fell into the delicate and fragile category, completely non-threatening.

Skillfully fiddling with her phone, she asked Gu Qingyang, Do you have anyone you trust?

Gu Qingyang shook his head: No.

Curious, Ye Jin asked, Then why did you demand twenty million from President Gu? And with such arrogance?

Gu Qingyang said disdainfully, He owes me that.

Ye Jin: Then he should count as trustworthy. In the future, if you have any issues, you can ask him for help.

Ask Gu Chenxi for help?

Gu Qingyang felt as disgusted as if he had swallowed ten thousand flies: How is that possible? Absolutely not!

Ye Jin paused for a second and spoke earnestly, You need to have someone.

Two hours later, Ye Jin and Gu Qingyang were both sitting in the police station, drinking tea.

It was then that Gu Qingyang finally understood what Ye Jin had meant by You need to have someone.
you’ll still face the punishment you deserve!

A stout officer sat across from them, expression stern, slamming the wooden table loudly: Do you know the video you posted went viral? Openly provoking the police—how dare you! Even though you weren’t involved in the street racing,
Ye Jin looked deeply remorseful, bowing and nodding repeatedly: Yes, we were wrong. We accept the punishment.

The officer’s expression softened slightly: Do you have a guarantor? Have them come sign the papers and pay the fine, then you can leave.

Gu Qingyang’s expression wasn’t looking good at that moment.

Because he suddenly realized that Ye Jin wanted Gu Chenxi to be that guarantor.

Having Gu Chenxi bail him out? That would be a humiliating disgrace!

No, Gu Qingyang said irritably. Just detain me directly!

Ye Jin: Yes! We have one! He should be here in about half an hour.

You have one?

Gu Qingyang was puzzled but also relieved. Then why did you ask me earlier? You could’ve just called your friend to bail us both out.

Ye Jin looked at him, hesitated to speak, then said earnestly again, No, you have one.

Since they had met, Ye Jin had acted first and explained later to him no fewer than three times.

Gu Qingyang suddenly thought of a possibility.

He gasped sharply, his voice trembling: You—what else did you do with my phone?

Ye Jin replied lightly, See for yourself.

Gu Qingyang grabbed his phone and, following Ye Jin’s thoughtful hint, opened the chat interface with Gu Chenxi.

In a tone filled with gritted teeth and extreme shock and fury, Gu Qingyang read the message aloud: Brother, I’m in trouble, save me…?

Followed by an even louder roar.

YE JIN!!!!!! I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!!!!
