Chapter 2: Stubbornly Silent

If Ye Jin couldn’t complete this task, she could pack up and leave today.

Of course, she could leave right now if she wanted.

But Ye Jin was born with an unyielding personality.

After staring at her computer for ten minutes, she finally decided to continue with her reckless approach.

Is anyone available right now? Ye Jin placed her hands on the desk, pushed herself up, and announced clearly, I need to coordinate project materials with each of you. Everyone needs to participate.

Her voice acted like a spotlight, drawing everyone’s attention toward her.

The looks they gave her were filled with terror, as if a speaking Ye Jin was some kind of monster.

Amid the silence, one person cautiously raised their hand, indicating they could cooperate now.

OK, I’ll be right there.

Ignoring those complicated gazes, Ye Jin grabbed her computer and headed straight for this colleague’s workstation.

Thus, for the entire afternoon, the President’s Office was filled with the sound of Ye Jin speaking at various workstations.

Although they all regarded her as a monster, they were quite cooperative when it came to work.

By the time Ye Jin submitted the fully completed forms, it was already an hour after work hours, and the office had become empty.

Ye Jin casually ate a bowl of wontons on her way home. After washing up, she curled up in bed and started scrolling through her phone.

In the quiet of the night, people inevitably fall into negative introspection.

Especially since Ye Jin had suddenly transmigrated here without even saying goodbye to her family.

Mechanically scrolling through her phone to distract herself, Ye Jin was in a rather foul mood.

She kept scrolling until nearly midnight.

Her phone’s sleep reminder popped up multiple times, but she dismissed it without any guilt each time.

Until the company app sent a notification.

Yan Rong to Ye Jin:

You did excellent work this afternoon.

Starting tomorrow, begin handing over the executive assistant duties. The transition period will last seven days. Work materials and appointment documents will be distributed tomorrow. Looking forward to our future cooperation!

Who wanted to cooperate with him?

Ye Jin complained out of habit, then realized what was written before that sentence.

Ye Jin bolted upright in bed.

So not only wasn’t she fired, but she was actually promoted?

–

Now Ye Jin couldn’t even force a fake smile.

The elevator reflection showed a cold face – still technically alive, but already partially dead inside.

If she had any savings at all, she would never come to this damned job.

As Ye Jin expected, she was extremely busy today.

Nearing the end of work hours, tasks still piled up like mountains.

Ye Jin simply gave up, went to get a cup of water, blew on the rising steam, took a small sip, and stared ahead with desperate eyes.

Her workstation had been moved today too.

The President’s Office had a standard rectangular layout, with the entrance near the elevators on one end and the boss’s office on the other.

Their workstations were in the center, while the rooms on both sides served as document rooms, meeting rooms, and similar spaces.

Ye Jin’s workstation had moved from the elevator end directly to the boss’s end.

Now whenever the boss opened his door, he could see her computer screen – chilling.

This job had become completely uninteresting.

The gossip on the internal network kept repeating the same few topics, most of them revolving around the boss.

But even after two days here, Ye Jin still hadn’t caught a glimpse of the boss.

straightened her posture, stuffed her charger and power bank into her bag, and pretended to be intensely busy.

There were still five minutes left until clock-off time when faint footsteps emerged from the office behind her.

Ye Jin stiffened, straightened her posture, stuffed her charger and power bank into her bag, and pretended to be intensely busy.

But no one emerged from the office.

Instead, an unfamiliar man in a bright orange jacket stormed in from outside.

His attire—both in fabric quality and tailoring—was exceptionally refined, as if stripped directly from a runway model and thrown onto himself.

Yet his slightly narrow shoulders and height under six feet made the haute couture look like bargain-bin merchandise.

He passed by Ye Jin without so much as a downward glance, pushed open the office door, and declared:

Hey, transfer twenty million to me.

His entitled voice leaked through the door crack before he casually swung it shut, muffling his next words.

Who was this person, so extravagant as to demand twenty million outright?

Ye Jin immediately pricked up her ears.

Soon, a thunderous noise erupted from the office.

The same arrogant voice shouted, Is twenty million that much? I’m only asking you for twenty million, and you can’t even spare that?

Even through the door, his voice was deafening.

It was accompanied by the sound of objects being smashed.

Damn it, say something!

After a commotion, security arrived, opened the door, and swarmed in.

The sounds from inside became clearer to Ye Jin.

Try laying a finger on me, I dare you! the man threatened the surrounding guards. Anyone who touches me, I’ll have my dad fire every one of you!

The office fell into a tense silence. The security guards hesitated, glancing uncertainly toward the boss’s chair, afraid to act rashly.

Ye Jin peeked discreetly, hoping to catch a glimpse of this boss’s true face.

But her workstation offered a poor view—she could only see a pair of hands resting on the desk.

The legendary boss wore a deep black suit, snowy white cuffs peeking out from the sleeves. His fingers were long and firm, a fountain pen held casually in his right hand, as if waiting for the commotion to subside so he could resume work.

Yet this composed demeanor only infuriated the creditor who’d demanded twenty million.

Fuck! Say something, damn you!

The creditor shoved a chair over, then viciously spat out the most venomous words he could muster: Every part of you was paid for by my parents! You owe all your success to them! And now you won’t even give me twenty million? Are you even human, huh? Gu Chenxi, where’s your filial duty? Did a
dog eat it?

Gu Chenxi, you maggot! Rat! A leech sucking my parents dry! You’ve taken so much from them all your life—what’s wrong with me asking for a little now? What right do you have to refuse me?

An argument requires back-and-forth exchanges.

But Gu Chenxi remained silent throughout, rendering the other’s hysterics almost comical.

–

In the end, the creditor was carried out by security.

After half an hour of rampaging and smashing things, he was utterly exhausted, his face smeared with blood from who-knows-where.

Gu Chenxi, this isn’t over!

The man’s voice was hoarse from shouting, yet his arrogance remained undiminished even as he was hauled away. Just wait—I’ll be back tomorrow, and I’ll keep coming until you transfer the money.

Ye Jin watched, utterly astounded.

Ye Jin watched, utterly astounded.

She stole another glance into the office—those hands remained calmly crossed on the desk, as if the earlier commotion had left him completely unfazed.

It was already time to clock out.

Ye Jin swiftly packed her things and left. While on the subway, she couldn’t resist opening the company’s mobile app to catch up on the gossip.

The person who had caused the scene earlier was Gu Qingyang, their boss’s older brother.

Gu Qingyang was an unruly character who spent his days hanging out with a group of idle rich kids, indulging in parties, entertainment, and flaunting his wealth.

Asking for twenty million to splurge seemed almost predictable for someone like him.

At midnight, Ye Jin received another work email from Yan Rong.

Muttering under her breath about how unreasonable he was, she clicked to open it.

Yan Rong to Ye Jin:

Today’s work was completed satisfactorily.

Starting tomorrow, please restrict access to the office area for all unauthorized personnel. You are fully responsible for implementing this directive. (Note: This work order is of the highest priority. Please complete it first.)

Instead of vaguely referring to unauthorized personnel, he might as well have just named Gu Qingyang directly.

Ye Jin had no intention of taking the fall for this, so she tactfully declined:

Sir, I’ve only been on the job for two days. I’m still unfamiliar with the situation here.

Yan Rong to Ye Jin:

Given Ms. Ye’s capabilities, I assume you’ve already grasped most of the details this afternoon.

Was he subtly calling her out for slacking off and gossiping earlier?

Ye Jin cursed Yan Rong eighteen different ways in her mind.

Then, another email arrived.

It contained additional information about Gu Qingyang.

After reading through it, Ye Jin pieced the story together.

The gist of it was:

Gu Qingyang had joined a sports car club—a clique of wealthy heirs who spent their days racing, revving engines on the streets, and chasing thrills.

The previous week, due to reckless driving, Gu Qingyang had gotten into an accident. He walked away unscathed, but the roadside flowerbed and his car were completely wrecked.

When traffic police investigated, they discovered the group had been driving severely over the speed limit and committing other traffic violations.

As a result, every member had their driver’s licenses revoked after maxing out penalty points.

The reason Gu Qingyang was demanding twenty million now was that his beloved car was totaled, and he wanted to buy a new one.

It was the epitome of having too much time and money on his hands.

How was he even going to drive a sports car without a license?

Frustrated and in a foul mood, Ye Jin began conjuring up one mischievous idea after another.

She picked up her phone and typed rapidly, requesting Yan Rong to approve an off-site assignment and activity budget.

She even guaranteed she could resolve the issue.

The other side seemed puzzled and didn’t reply immediately.

Nevertheless, the work request she submitted through the system was approved.

Yan Rong might be a workaholic, but at least he was reasonable.

In the stillness of the late night, the person on the other end of the phone was the only living soul Ye Jin felt she could talk to in this world.

She couldn’t resist sending one more message.

Ye Jin to Yan Rong:

If you have time, I’d recommend seeing a psychologist.

Yan Rong to Ye Jin:

For Gu Qingyang?

Ye Jin to Yan Rong:

For our boss!

He got chewed out like a grandson today and didn’t even make a sound—talk about restraint.

This time, there was no instant reply. After a long pause, a string of ellipses came through, responding to Ye Jin’s little verbal trap.

Ye Jin chuckled to herself, suddenly thinking this person wasn’t so bad after all.

Then she typed earnestly:

It’s not good for our boss to be like this, really. He could end up with pent-up stress and internal damage.

This pause lasted even longer than the last one.

Deep within a thirty-eighth-floor office of a downtown high-rise.

The hands Ye Jin had seen earlier were now holding a black phone.

Displayed on the screen was evidence of someone’s inappropriate remarks.

His fingertip hovered, pausing for a long time.

He typed a series of ellipses.

Then typed another series of ellipses.

When Ye Jin received those two strings of ellipses, she immediately felt like she was bullying an honest person.

Holding her phone, she chuckled for a while longer.

This Yan Rong—what a good man.
