- Chapter 47 - Awaiting the Day to Unleash Its Edge
“What is my other half up to?”
Having just finished watching an episode of her anime, Kobato’s curiosity piqued. She cautiously stepped into the entranceway and peeked outside through the slightly open door.
Under the warm sunlight, a gentle breeze rustled the flowers and plants in the courtyard.
The young boy sat quietly on a chair, holding a piece of wood over a meter long with one hand, while his other hand steadily carved it using a knife.
This scene exuded a poetic charm.
Having already procured the raw materials yesterday, Hasegawa Izumi wasted no time. After breakfast today, he began crafting the ‘Noble Phantasm’.
Following modern techniques, the process typically involves placing the wooden material into a mold for shaping, ensuring uniformity and form. Then, manual refinement follows to achieve a smoother surface and maintain proper curvature. Finally, applying a finish enhances both the aesthetic appeal and durability of the wooden sword.
Such a method produces a wooden sword that best simulates the handling of a real blade.
As for the initial molding step, Izumi decided to optimize it directly.
It’s not that he couldn’t afford to buy one; rather, he trusts his own hands more!
Initially, he planned to shape the wood using only his bare hands, carving it into a divine blade. However, the physical laws of this world remain firmly established, and currently, he is unable to overcome these limitations.
With no choice, he decided to slightly rely on tools for assistance.
First, he divided the block of wood into two pieces: one for the sword body and the other for the scabbard.
The crafting process wasn’t overly complex. With his tactile precision, he didn’t even need guide lines, maintaining remarkable accuracy effortlessly.
Wood shavings flew everywhere as thin strips peeled off like unrolling paper, swiftly revealing the unmistakable form of a longsword.
When it came to refining the finer details, his pace slowed down slightly. Nonetheless, within just an hour, he crafted a meticulously shaped wooden sword, resembling perfection itself.
“Length approximately 85 centimeters, width and thickness both around 3 centimeters.”
He held it up, estimating the measurements with a glance.
At first sight, it appeared as an ordinary wooden sword, but its grain resembled swirling clouds, giving it an exceptionally pleasing aesthetic.
That was sufficient for him.
After crafting the wooden sword, he proceeded to make its scabbard.
First, he estimated the required space for the hollowed-out section using two separate pieces of wood. Then, he meticulously carved them before joining the two halves together with glue to create a suitable scabbard.
Finally, it was time for painting……
“We don’t have any paint at home. I’ll go buy some this afternoon.”
With that thought, he tidied up his tools and began cleaning the yard.
“My Other Half, can I touch it just once? That…,” Kobato asked during lunchtime as she sat on her chair, swinging her little feet back and forth. She turned to gaze at the Noble Phantasm hanging on the wall, clearly captivated by it.
“Of course, you can even handle it until it develops a patina if you like,” Hasegawa Izumi replied with a smile.
His affection for his sister always came first, especially for such a small request.
“I’ll give it a try then, An-chan.”
Kobato slid off her seat, tiptoed, but realizing it wasn’t enough, fetched a chair to finally reach down the wooden sword.
“My Other Half, watch these moves I just created: Hey-oh! Blood Berserk! Mountain-Crushing Earth-Splitting Slash! Soul Devouring Demon Sealing Slash!”
Grasping the wooden sword, Kobato swung it wildly, feeling quite pleased with herself.
It’s like watching a Vampire turning into a Berserker warrior.
“How was that?!” Exhausted from swinging, Kobato approached him, her expression filled with anticipation.
“My evaluation is… ‘Chaotic Swings of Summer,’ Kobato. You have great potential in this area.” Unable to hold back, he chuckled.
“Really?!”
The naive and adorable sister didn’t catch the underlying humor, instead, she seemed genuinely thrilled.
Later in the afternoon.
After much deliberation, Hasegawa Izumi purchased clear spray paint to preserve the original color. The intricate patterns were too perfect to remove.
He then inscribed the words “Seek Defeat” on the blade using ink and added a tassel at the hilt as the final touch.
With these steps completed, the wooden sword was truly finished.
“Just awaiting the day you test its edge,” Hasegawa Izumi murmured softly, raising the wooden sword high before sliding it smoothly into its scabbard. The locking mechanism secured it tightly, and he hung the ensemble outside the window.
Exposure to sunlight and rain, infused by the elements’ power, would only enhance its spiritual grace.
The sky gradually darkened as the sun set in the west.
He hadn’t forgotten what he promised his sister yesterday.
To ensure this went smoothly, he needed to carefully choose a restaurant. However, he wasn’t particularly well-versed in that area.
Suddenly, Hasegawa Izumi recalled a lively figure from his mind.
“Oh right, Chika seems quite fond of ramen. I should just consult her.”
During lunchtime, Fujiwara Chika often stayed in class with her bento box and sometimes came over to chat about food with him.
When she discovered he made his own lunches, the girl was genuinely astonished for quite some time.
Chika: Eh? Why is Izumi-chan suddenly asking about this? But yeah, I do know which places have the most authentic flavors! If Izumi-chan wants to know, you better plead nicely! Winking smiley face.
Me: My little sister loves tonkotsu ramen, but it’s too complicated to make at home, so we’re planning to eat out instead. Please help me, Miss Chika!
Chika: Oh wow, I didn’t know Izumi-chan had a sister!
Chika: (´Δ`) I don’t know any places like that! Let me see what’s nearby!
Their relationship hadn’t been especially close until now; it had only revolved around games, so it was perfectly normal for her to be unfamiliar with his family situation.
Just as he didn’t really know much about the Fujiwaras…
Well, okay, he did have some basic knowledge, since he’d visited their home a few times before.
Chika: Come here! Now we’re entering my domain as a ramen aficionado! This is one area where I’m more knowledgeable than Izumi-chan—I won’t disappoint your sister!
She sent him a location pin.
“It looks like Chika wants to come along.”
Hasegawa Izumi understood her intentions.
Speaking of which, if word got out that the distinguished young lady from the Fujiwara family frequented such establishments, people might think less of them.
Couldn’t Eriri take a page from her book?
As long as Kashiwagi Eri’s identity doesn’t get exposed, there’s really nothing wrong with it.
Unfortunately, whenever Izumi brought this up, his childhood friend bristled.
According to the location data…
Hasegawa Izumi took his sister down a bustling but excessively noisy street.
It’s usually hard for high-end restaurants to survive in places like this.
Still, it wouldn’t be surprising if some hole-in-the-wall joints served better food than fancy establishments.
As he and his sister turned the corner, shouts came from nearby.
“Izumi-chan, over here~!” A cherry-haired girl with a bow on her head waved and called out energetically, smiling radiantly.
