The Omnipotent Super Chuunibyou - Chapter 33
“It’s so loud over there. What happened?”
“Why are you still here chatting?! C’mere, Yamazaki’s challenging Hasegawa!”
“Huh? Someone’s challenging Hasegawa! It’s that track star, Yamazaki.”
“Who’s gonna win? These two… Even though Yamazaki is a pro, Hasegawa is just so abnormal, it’s impossible to figure him out.”
The news of the impending match drew the attention of many students lingering on the field.
First off, any unusual occurrence naturally drew a crowd, and this event involved the currently reigning champion, Hasegawa-san.

My name is Yamazaki Yutaka, and I’m not particularly good-looking. My grades were mediocre from elementary through high school, but I’ve always had a talent for running. When my potential was discovered, I vowed to become the fastest man in all of Japan!
After passing the qualifying exam, I was admitted to Shuchi’in High School, where I joined the Track and Field Club.
Just as I was preparing to make my debut, I heard about a madman at the school who held no club in high regard.
At first, I didn’t pay him any mind, just like everyone else. But when he defeated the tennis club’s captain, the track team finally realized the danger we were in.
No one wants to be crushed underfoot and lose all their dignity.
So, after discussing the matter with my teammates, I decided to step up and test the man’s strength on behalf of our club.
If he really was too strong, I figured I could use an excuse like “I’m not feeling well” to get out of accepting his challenge.
A little shamelessness goes a long way, and it’s better than suffering unnecessarily, right?
Besides, what if I won?
————
We stepped onto the track, each taking one lane. The event was a hundred-meter sprint.
The man strolled over, his face relaxed, as if he felt no sense of danger whatsoever.
He’s so calm, Yamazaki Yutaka thought, doing his stretches.
Soon, the students with the stopwatches and starter pistol were in position, and the race was about to begin.
Yamazaki Yutaka set his feet, right foot forward, about a foot’s distance from the left, his shoulders wide, knees slightly bent, body leaning forward.
He had performed this starting stance countless times, each one textbook perfect.
Sssss…
As he silently prepared to run, a strange sound suddenly filled his ears.
Whose water is boiling?!
He couldn’t help turning to look.
The man had slightly parted his lips, revealing a row of pearly white teeth. The “sssss” sound must have come from his mouth, the air being ripped apart by his teeth.
Was he making that sound for fun?
Yamazaki Yutaka really couldn’t understand this guy. But when he recalled what everyone else said about him, he quickly accepted it.
“Ready… go!” a female student called, raising a starter pistol.
The pistol cracked, and Yamazaki bolted, leaving the wind in his wake.
“Huh? Where’d he go?” After running a ways, Yamazaki was shocked to discover that he hadn’t heard any footsteps behind him.
Had he left the other runner far behind?
In truth, Izumi had yet to move a single step.
“Hasegawa-san, aren’t you going to chase after him?”
Just as the starter was about to remind him to get moving, she saw him slowly crouch down, muttering something under his breath.
“Thunder Breathing: Thunderclap and Flash!”
In a flash, like lightning, the boy vanished from sight.
“Wha…?” The girl stared blankly.
————-
Am I really going to win? I’m so close to the finish line!
Yamazaki Yutaka glanced at the finish line up ahead, his face filled with hope.
But I’ve already won, haven’t I? What’s so great about Hasegawa anyway?
In the next instant, an urgent sound pierced his ears, thundering through his head.
“What? He…caught up?”
Yamazaki’s heart jolted, and he was about to turn around, but the figure had already flown past him before he could even move.
Was that even humanly possible?
At that moment, he questioned the very world around him.
“Hasegawa-san is the winner!”
As Hasegawa Izumi crossed the finish line, the girl holding the stopwatch stared blankly for a moment before snapping out of it and hitting the button on her device.
Even still, in this race, Hasegawa Izumi had overtaken Yamazaki Yutaka, who had a thirty-meter head start, and set a new school record!
This feat quickly became the talk of the school.
The reputation of Hasegawa Izumi grew even more fearsome!
——————
“Do you have a moment, Hasegawa-san?”
As soon as he exited the track, a girl approached him.
This was quite a novel occurrence.
Though his fame at Shuchi’in had already reached its zenith, few people ever came up to talk to him, for certain reasons.
“You are… Nakano-san, right?”
He studied her features: long, shoulder-length pink hair; bangs that covered her right eye. He recalled her name.
“Hasegawa-san knows who I am?”
Nakano Miku’s expression seemed a bit surprised, as though she were unsure how someone would remember her, given how quiet she’d always been at school.
“I have a decent memory. I remember you from the self-introductions we did at the beginning of the year. Besides, Nakano-san is quite cute, and the headphones are a distinctive touch,” he said, thinking back.
This blatant compliment made the girl blush.
“So, what brings Nakano-san here?” he asked.
“U-umm… I saw the tennis match on Monday, and Hasegawa-san was really cool, especially when you used Wind, Forest, Fire, and Mountain. It was amazing!”
Though she was a little bashful at first, Nakano Miku’s expression quickly grew excited as she continued.
“I wanted to ask you about it. Is it from Takeda Shingen? Do you know a lot about the warring states and their generals?”
At that moment, Hasegawa Izumi realized that this girl must be a history fanatic.
He deliberated over his response. “The ‘Wind, Forest, Fire, and Mountain’ maneuver comes from Takeda Nobutora, but Takeda Shingen also got it from ‘The Art of War.’ If you’re interested, I recommend reading ‘The Art of War’ itself. As for the warring states and their generals, I’m not very familiar with them… Nice talking to you, Nakano-san.”
With that, he tossed his right hand and turned to leave.
Am I really supposed to recommend a girl read The Art of War ? Also, isn’t the pronunciation wrong? Ah, whatever.
Still standing in place, Nakano Miku seemed perplexed.
“Sun Tzu? A girl wrote The Art of War?”
