- Chapter 30 - I’ve Already Started Researching the Next Opponent the Kendo Club
During lunch, Nibutani Shinka rested her head on the desk, staring off into space, her eyes glazed over.
“Nibutani-san, I’ve noticed you’ve been a bit absentminded these last few days. Daydreaming, even. Could it be that you’re thinking about a boy?”
Suddenly, Kazeno, one of her friends in class, leaned over to whisper in her ear.
“Absolutely not!” she shot back, smacking the desk.
“See? I knew it.”
Kazeno pointed at her with both hands, looking like she’d won some great victory.
“Whatever, I’m not in the mood to bicker with you.”
Nibutani Shinka knew that explaining herself would only make things more complicated. And the main reason was that she wasn’t considering trifling matters such as romance. She was indeed thinking about a man, but one who could ruin her life.
Shortly before dismissal.
After school, head to the gym. We need to negotiate with the basketball team about Friday’s event.
Her phone lit up with a message from the cheerleading captain.
“Always causing trouble,” she sighed.
As she prepared to leave the classroom, someone called out from behind her.
She turned to see a tall, handsome student, probably a member of the basketball club, though she couldn’t recall his name.
Whatever, it doesn’t matter. He’s just some guy.
“Yes, what is it?” Nibutani Shinka smiled politely.
“Oh, I just meant that we’re going in the same direction, so why don’t we walk together?” he asked.
Though her background was modest, she was exceptionally attractive, so it was no surprise that she attracted the attention of some boys, such as this new member of the basketball club.
“About that…? We’re all walking the same path, so there’s no need to think about it, really.”
She gently declined.
“My apologies for bothering you.”
The boy scratched his head and left, not without some embarrassment.
Minutes later…
Members of both the cheerleading and basketball clubs had arrived at their destination.
At Shuchi’in, clubs related to sports were especially popular. The basketball and soccer clubs were among the most popular, though the soccer club had dissolved last year. In contrast, the basketball club had retained most of its members and was now virtually unrivaled in popularity.
This was all thanks to the current basketball club president, third-year Hinata Koji, and his vice president, second-year Hiiragi Gomatsu. Not only were they skilled at basketball, but they were also exceptionally handsome, their short haircuts making them look even more rugged.
“President Hinata, my idea is…”
The cheerleading captain was negotiating with Hinata Koji.
While the rest of the basketball club practiced on the court, the rest of the cheerleaders rested against the wall.
“Vice Club President’s style is so cool!”
“I like Kato-senpai, too, but he’s in a different class.”
Nibutani Shinka glanced over, but the girls beside her were engrossed in a discussion about which of the basketball boys was more handsome and outstanding.
“Hmph.”
How vulgar!
It seemed that joining the cheerleading club wasn’t necessarily a good choice after all.
For some reason, this young lady was unusually preoccupied, her thoughts drifting even more than usual.
“Bang! Bang! Bang…”
Suddenly, someone banged on the door, urgent and insistent.
Since the gym was not enclosed, this was meant to alert everyone inside.
Instantly, everyone stopped what they were doing, their attention drawn to the sound.
Four figures silhouetted against the backlight strode through the door, imposing and magnificent. Takanashi Rikka opened a black umbrella, her expression unusually cold.
Dekomori Sanae placed her right foot forward, left foot back, striking the same cool pose she had when she first appeared on stage.
Fujiwara Chika wore a red sun hat, one hand casually resting on the brim, her expression mysterious, as if she were hiding something.
Hasegawa Izumi, leading the group, had his hands in his pockets, looking around with an arrogant air.
“Yo, basketball club. Hello! Are you in the middle of extra training?”
The corners of his mouth crooked upward in a smirk.
Finally, the people in the gym recovered from their initial shock.
“You’re that Hasegawa, aren’t you? You’ve come today specifically to see how strong basketball club huh.”
Basketball Club President Hinata Koji took a few steps forward, confident written all over his face. To be honest, he was still proud of his team’s abilities, and this guy’s actions had been awfully arrogant—showing up to play tennis without even bringing a racket! Clearly, he hadn’t been serious at all!
In comparison, this guy’s attention to them was…
“No.”
Hinata was caught off guard by the immediate answer.
“Huh?”
He felt utterly dejected.
“I’m not here for you. To me, the game against your basketball club is just another victory destined for. Nothing special… I’m right now focus studying the next opponent, the kendo club.”
That previous trash talk had already been given to the soccer club, so he’s here to making up for the trash talk session against the basketball club.
“you arrogant prick!”
“Don’t start fight at school, you idiot!”
One of the basketball players, a hothead, tried to take action right away, but his teammates held him back.
“Hasegawa-san, I know you’re feeling confident after beating the Go Club and tennis club, but we’ll show you that the basketball club is a different beast! We were just one point away from taking first place in the national championship! Your arrogance will end with us!”
Hinata Koji’s expression turned solemn.
“Is that so, I’ll be waiting.”
Hasegawa Izumi’s tone was wooden, as if he were merely being polite out of habit. In his mind, only the champion of the national tournament could be considered a character worthy of note—and even then, he’d prefer it if the title were earned in a singles competition.
In fact, Shuchi’in High School had only two such individuals.
After dealing with the basketball club, it was time to turn to more pressing matters.
Takanashi Rikka scanned the crowd. “Mori Summer, it’s time for you to come out and greet us.”
“Mori Summer?”
“Who’s that?”
Everyone was mystified by this strange name, and they looked at one another, baffled.
Only Nibutani Shinka buried his head in his arms, hunched over like an ostrich, pretending not to hear.
I’m not here! I’m not here! I’m not here…
He muttered this mantra silently in his mind.
“Nibutani-san, you can’t escape your fate. You are the last puzzle piece I’m looking for!”
Hasegawa Izumi noticed Nibutani’s attempts at self-isolation and went straight for the kill.
Life is full of ups and downs. Since you can’t fight it, you might as well enjoy it! This was the lesson he wanted to impart.
“Ah!!! Are you done yet?! Hasegawa you jerk, I’m gonna xxxx you!”
A bloodcurdling scream ripped through the gym.
Nibutani Shinka bolted out, grabbing the arm of the person in question and dragging him toward the exit.
“Let’s go.”
The other three followed close behind, leaving the gym in disarray.
“I can’t believe… I can’t believe Nibutani-san already…”
The first-year basketball player seemed on the verge of tears, but no tears came.
