Oh no! I misspoke! Takanashi Rikka bit her lip. Weren’t those words a blatant expression of her doubts about her ally’s abilities? Wouldn’t that damage their sacred contract?

“Ahem,” the girl hastily changed her tune. “Looks like I misheard you.”

“Hm?”

Hasegawa Izumi’s ears twitched.

Footsteps approached from a short distance away.

“Izumi-chan! Takanashi-san! So you were here after all.”

Fujiwara Chika had come running over with a youthful grin on her face. She wore a white track suit. The twin peaks of her chest rose and fell with each stride; it was quite a magnificent sight.

Chika-chan has such assets? He hadn’t noticed this before. How late I’ve discovered this.

But it wasn’t important.

“Was there something you needed?” he asked.

“Oh no,” she replied casually as she sat down on a bench nearby. “It’s nothing really. I ran into Nana-chan just now. She said the school found someone to take care of the zoo animals already. So you guys don’t need to go anymore.” Chika placed her hands on the bench’s edge and grinned at him sideways.

“I see. It’s already time to say goodbye, then… That’s earlier than I expected,” Hasegawa Izumi sighed.

Although they’d only spent twenty days together, she couldn’t help feeling a little sorry to part with the adorable little creatures. But there was nothing for it; she had plenty of free time now, but once the era changed, she’d be too busy to visit. Better to hand them off to someone else sooner rather than later, before she grew too attached.

“Time to say goodbye to the chimera and the others?” Takanashi Rikka muttered, somewhat taken aback. “I suppose. Their existence is still too dangerous; they need a proper Trainer.”

Regrettably, the creatures could not exist as Summoned Beasts, because the Sage had no such wish, and Rikka still faced the threat of the Priestess.

“It’s all right. You can visit them whenever you want,” Fujiwara Chika said, having noticed her expression.

Her easy tone and smile instantly lightened the mood.

“That’s right! It’s not like they’ve been transported to another dimension or anything—they can still be summoned!”

Takanashi Rikka stood up, her face aglow with excitement.

At noon, the three paid one last visit to the zoo to bid farewell to the animals.

As the afternoon approached, the wind outside the window grew fiercer, as if echoing the emotions of certain individuals.

Indeed, many students at the school were even more eager to see the outcome of this match than Hasegawa Izumi and Takanashi Rikka.

A victory in a single match could be chalked up to luck, but what about two victories in a row?

If their opponent succeeded, the remaining clubs would be in grave danger. The flames of war could easily reach them at any moment. The thought of being trampled underfoot by these Impure students filled them with deep humiliation.

“Ding~”

The dismissal bell rang, and the teacher promptly left, taking his materials with him.

In the classroom, everyone waited for someone else to make the first move.

“Let’s go, Rikka,” Hasegawa Izumi said, standing and waving his right hand. “Let’s show them the true meaning of power!”

Takanashi Rikka responded immediately. “Let’s crush their delusions! No foe can stand before us!”

Fujiwara Chika reacted quickly and ran to the back of the classroom to join them.

Finally, those left in the classroom seemed to awaken from their frozen states.

“Who do you think will win? At first, I thought Hasegawa Izumi was just here to make us laugh, but he actually beat the Go Club. Maybe he’s serious about this.”

“What nonsense are you talking about?! The tennis club president isn’t going to be as easy to defeat as Go’s President Waya. They’re so different in size; Hasegawa’s physical ability definitely won’t measure up! It’s a hard fact.”

“Don’t be so sure. You don’t want to be left eating your words.”

“Are you trying to say you’re not talk nonsense? Anyway, I refuse to believe Hasegawa will pull off a miracle.”

“Time to head to club.”

“You go ahead. I want to watch their match.”

Opinions began to diverge, and quite a few people were already looking forward to Hasegawa’s performance.

This was the psychology of envy, or admiration toward the strong.

After all, they had yet to experience the other’s personal charm.

As they chatted, Hasegawa Izumi, Fujiwara Chika, and Takanashi Rikka arrived downstairs, ready to change into their shoes.

Fujiwara Chika slid her sock-clad feet into her student leather shoes, adjusting them so the tips touched the floor, perfectly fitting.

Takanashi Rikka continued fiddling with her Heelys shoes. To show respect for the occasion, she’d opted for a pair of sneakers instead, so she’d look more presentable when she stepped onto the court.

A little later, they arrived at the tennis court.

A crowd of spectators had already amassed outside the chain-link fence, shoulder to shoulder, hoping to snag the best spots from which to watch the match.

Compared to the number of people who’d turned out for the Go Club’s match, this event was drawing a significantly larger audience.

“Move aside,” Hasegawa Izumi called out in a deep, forceful voice that immediately drowned out the crowd’s chatter. Only then did the spectators realize who they were dealing with, and they hastily opened a path.

Leading the way, the three strode onto the tennis court.

“You’re Hasegawa, right? You seem pretty average, nothing special. I can’t believe you beat the Go Club… Were you really cheating like everyone says?”

A tall, muscular man with shoulder-length hair strode toward them, his powerful voice resonating as he stopped before them, easily over six feet tall.

Compared to the two girls, neither of whom topped five feet, he looked like a giant potato.

“You must be the Club President of the tennis club,” Kawamura Kentaro said.

Hasegawa Izumi’s gaze didn’t falter, even under the intimidating presence of the man’s size and height. “Are you really as arrogant as everyone says?”

Rather than becoming upset at this lack of response, Kawamura Kentaro’s interest was piqued. “But I don’t care if you cheated or not. What’s important is, are you ready to take me on? Let me tell you this: I play to win, and with your puny physique, I’m not responsible if you end up crying.”

Keep in mind that accidentally hitting someone with a tennis ball was incredibly common, so even without direct confrontation, injuries were bound to occur. This was unlike Go, a game of strategy played on paper.

“I was going to say the same thing,” Hasegawa Izumi replied with a faint smile.

The court was a battlefield, and he understood this more than anyone.

“Also, I’ll end this match as swiftly as possible, so you’d better watch out.”

These words sounded entirely provocative.

“Hah.” Kawamura Kentaro laughed through his anger, clenching his fists as he glared fiercely. “Don’t worry, I won’t waste too much of your time!”
