  3. Chapter 13 - Shuchi'in's Go Club is Trash

The Go Club’s room was decorated in a traditional style. On one side, facing the window, sat a tatami mat with a paper screen and fans, usually used by the club’s president to engage in games with other members. The rest of the room was filled with long wooden tables, upon which sat Go boards and black and white stones, used by the members for practice.

Currently, the Go Club’s President Waya Yoshitaka was analyzing a game that had just been played against a professional Go player online.

“Tap, tap, tap…”

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. One of the club members went over to open it, revealing a handsome young man with a cold expression.

“Please give this to your president.”

The young man handed a letter over without a word, and the member instinctively took it, only to notice the words “challenge letter” written on the envelope. His expression shifted to shock, but by then, the stranger had already disappeared.

“How interesting… I can’t help but wonder if I’ve somehow been transported to the past. A challenge letter? Seriously?”

After reading through the contents, Waya Yoshitaka’s face lit up with a bright smile.

“This is obviously a provocation, Club President! You’ve already passed the professional exam; not just anybody can challenge you to a match! This guy’s definitely just looking for attention!”

A first-year high school student who’d recently joined the club offered his opinion.

“I don’t think so. You can tell what he’s thinking from the way he wrote this; he’s definitely serious about it. So, I need to take this seriously and prepare properly for the match on the day after tomorrow. It just so happens that I haven’t had any opponents for Go lately, so I hope he’s a strong player who can give me a good game!”

Waya Yoshitaka’s face lit up with anticipation.

After sending off the letter, Hasegawa Izumi and Takanashi Rikka went to the Mass Media Club, which was located on the floor above.

“Knock, knock.”

“Come in.”

The two entered after hearing the voice from within.

The Mass Media Club was bustling with activity. Members were passing around information they’d collected, preparing for the next day’s publication.

The Club President, Asahi Shizuku, was the daughter of the newspaper bureau chief. She wore glasses, giving her a gentle appearance.

“Carry on, Erika and Karen, come with me.”

After delegating the work, she brought two promising new members with her to deal with the visitors.

“Please take a seat… I’m the Club President of the Mass Media Club, Asahi Shizuku. May I ask what brings you here today?”

Asahi Shizuku waited until the visitors were seated before speaking.

“I actually came here today because…”

Hasegawa Izumi explained his intentions outright.

Asahi Shizuku listened silently, then pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose.

The other two girls, Kose Erika and Kino Karen, exchanged a glance, then both leaned back in their chairs, disconcerted.

What kind of madman would dare show up at our school and brag about wanting to “Club Challenge”?

Shuchi’in’s high school division boasted an abundance of exceptional talent, enough to say it concealed dragons and concealed tigers. How could anyone possibly beat everyone?

Not to mention, even if the guy had the ability, challenging everyone was clearly a poor choice of strategy. It was way too offensive!

“Excuse me, but could you be the infamous middle…er, person who made such a splash on your first day?” Kino Karen asked confidently.

“That’s right.”

His expression remained unchanged as he nodded.

“Are you sure you want to do this, Hasegawa-san?”

Asahi Shizuku tried again.

Covering a story like this would naturally draw a lot of attention to the Mass Media Club, but pushing it through would likely have unforeseeable consequences, especially for the challenger himself.

She didn’t want to be the one to send him down into the abyss.

“Of course,” he replied, perfectly unruffled.

“Don’t limit your horizons. You have no idea what we’re capable of… Hurry up and give us an answer!” Takanashi Rikka couldn’t help but urge her on.

“All right.” After a moment of hesitation, Asahi Shizuku nodded in agreement.

Then, they formally began their interviews.

“Hasegawa-san, your challenge is nothing short of suicidal. Could I ask why you’ve decided to do something so tragically heroic?” Kino Karen asked, all business.

“I’ve issued this challenge because I’m confident in my abilities. My goal is quite simple: I want to raise the profile of our Far Eastern Magic Society until it becomes the number one club at Shuchi’in.”

Hasegawa Izumi shot her a glance, then replied mildly

Next to them, Kose Erika took notes on the conversation in her notebook.

“What is the Far Eastern Magic Society? Is it your club?”

Kino Karen looked perplexed at this key phrase.

“That’s right. It’s the name of the organization that I, the Wielder of True Eye of the Evil King, and our Sage established at Shuchi’in. We hope to have more like-minded individuals join us so we can face the threat of the Invisible Boundary Lines Authority.”

Takanashi Rikka chimed in.

Kino Karen stared at the Club President, but she only shook her head. She didn’t understand either.

Kose Erika held back a roast and silently took notes.

“Is there anything else Hasegawa-san would like to add?”

At the end of the interview, Kino Karen gave him a chance to make additional remarks.

Hasegawa Izumi took a deep breath, and his gaze sharpened a bit. “The Go Club was just the beginning. Next, I’ll challenge more clubs, aiming to raise the Far Eastern Magic Society’s status until everyone acknowledges our existence. Some may not take us seriously, but I will prove one thing to everyone… In front of us, everyone at Shuchi’in is nothing but trash.”

And he’s even spewing trash talk!

Is he trying to make enemy of everyone?

The three girls were scared witless. Whether she succeeded or failed, it would be an unimaginable burden. The news would definitely be met with ridicule and mockery.

They couldn’t imagine how difficult the road ahead would be.

After Hasegawa Izumi and Takanashi Rikka left, the remaining three exchanged glances.

“What do you guys think? Are we really going to do this?” Asahi Shizuku still had her reservations.

Club President, you already promised her, didn’t you? It’s too late to back out now,” Kino Karen said, spreading her hands in a shrug.

“Even if something happens, it’s not our fault, right? Everyone has to take responsibility for their own decisions,” Kose Erika added.

“All right.” Asahi Shizuku finally nodded, then turned to her club members, urging them to hurry with their work in hopes of releasing the news by tomorrow morning.

“Anyway, Hasegawa-san has the Sawamura family behind him, so there’s no need to worry about those people doing anything too extreme. As for isolation and verbal abuse, since he was able to say what he did upon entering the school and acted as he did just now, I suppose he must have a strong heart…?” This was her judgment, reached within her mind.
