Niannian had barely walked a few steps when she sensed something strange behind her.

She quickly turned around but saw nothing. Scratching her head in confusion, she frowned.

Didn’t Master always say her intuition was spot-on? She clearly felt like someone was behind her just now… so why was no one there?

Grumble! Her stomach interrupted her thoughts again, growling loudly. Already starving, Niannian decisively gave up thinking and continued walking quickly toward the neighborhood gate.

Not long after she left, a middle-aged man’s head popped out from behind a large tree. The man looked at Niannian’s small figure in the distance, patting his chest in relief.

“Phew, that was close, she almost noticed me! Why has Niannian’s spiritual sense gotten even sharper lately?”

“Master,” said a young boy beside him, “if you’re so worried, why did you send Little Junior Sister away in the first place? And since you already sent her off, why sneak around following her like a thief?”

The speaker was a handsome teenage boy, tall and well-proportioned, wearing a simple Taoist robe that somehow looked elegant and noble on him.

His features were refined and striking, especially those slightly upturned peach blossom eyes, brimming with charm even at his young age.

He hadn’t even fully grown yet, but when he did, he’d surely be the kind of person who could make countless girls fall for him at a glance.

“Hmph! Of course I have my reasons,” snorted the middle-aged man, Taoist Master Qingyun, lifting his chin proudly, adopting the air of a strict teacher. “Your junior sister had to go back. She can only be safe at home. You think I don’t feel bad about sending her away?”

The young man rolled his eyes so hard it was a miracle they didn’t get stuck. His expression clearly said, ‘Go on, keep making excuses.’

“Oh, stop giving me that look. Enough talking, we need to catch up! She’s getting farther away!” Taoist Qingyun hurriedly followed after the little girl in the distance, leaving his disciple behind.

The boy sighed helplessly and trailed after him, also trying to stay hidden.

At that moment, little Niannian had already left the residential area. Standing on the busy street, she stared blankly at the endless flow of cars and people.

Where were the mountains? The rivers? The forests? Without those, how was she supposed to fish, catch rabbits, or find wild fruits?

Her shoulders drooped. She looked down at her flat little belly and felt tears welling up in her eyes. But she blinked hard and forced them back.

Her pitiful little face could make anyone’s heart ache.

“Little tummy, hang in there! I’ll definitely find something for you to eat soon! I must not have gone far enough. Come on, Niannian! Just a bit further and there’ll be food!”

She cheered herself up with determination and, trusting her instincts, chose a random direction to keep walking.

Behind her, Taoist Qingyun frowned in worry. “Where on earth is she going? How can she just wander off like that? There’s no adult watching her, what’s Yu Shanhe even doing? Doesn’t he realize his daughter just came home? What if she gets lost again?”

“Who knows,” muttered the boy with irritation. “If he’d actually cared, she wouldn’t have been abandoned at birth. I told you before, if she had to leave the mountain, we could’ve taken care of her! But no, you had to send her back to her parents. And now you’re sneaking around following her anyway, it’s like taking off your pants just to fart.”

He huffed angrily, full of resentment. His precious little junior sister, his adorable, gentle, considerate little junior sister, the sweetest, most lovable girl in the whole universe! What if she got lost? Or worse, what if some bad person spotted her?

No. He couldn’t stand it. He had to bring her back!

“Chuchen! Don’t you dare!” Taoist Qingyun barked sharply when he saw his disciple about to step forward.

Niannian might look sweet and obedient, but she was stubborn to the core. She wasn’t shy around strangers, but she was fiercely resistant to outsiders.

She’d only just returned home and hadn’t formed much of a bond with her parents yet. If she saw them now, she’d cry and beg to go back with them.

And if that happened… even he might not be able to resist her. Even if he did, he’d only end up hurting her feelings. That would undo everything they’d worked for.

So for now, neither he nor his disciples could appear before her. He only came because he couldn’t stop worrying, he wanted to secretly check how his little disciple was doing.

Liu Chuchen understood from his master’s tone that there was no changing his mind about sending Niannian down the mountain. He sighed and withdrew his step, still full of resentment toward his master.

Half a month ago, Master had gathered all of them to discuss sending their little junior sister home to her biological parents.

Every one of the senior brothers had immediately opposed it. But their objections didn’t matter.

Master made the decision himself, insisting that Niannian had to go back, that if she didn’t, she would one day face a great catastrophe, one that could cost her life.

They all adored Niannian. They couldn’t let their own attachment endanger her. So, reluctantly, they agreed.

They knew their master loved her just as much as they did. He’d never joke about something like this, nor drive her away without reason.

But no matter how much they pressed, he refused to explain further, only saying, “You’ll understand when the time comes.”

Liu Chuchen had already been unhappy about that secrecy. And now, seeing his little junior sister wandering the streets alone with her tiny backpack, he was furious.

Was she really doing well at home? Did her parents really love her? If they did, would they allow a five-and-a-half-year-old child to wander alone through a big city?

Hidden beneath his wide sleeves, Liu Chuchen clenched his fists, fighting the urge to snatch her back right then and there.

Taking a deep breath, he said firmly, “Master, I’m staying to protect Niannian.”

“You! You disobedient child! Are you trying to anger me to death?!” Taoist Qingyun jabbed a finger toward his disciple’s face, about to scold him but Liu Chuchen interrupted.

“I won’t take her away. I’ll go home first, handle my family’s affairs, and once that’s settled, I’ll come back and keep an eye on Niannian. Don’t worry, I won’t interfere with your plan.”

Liu Chuchen’s handsome face was full of determination. His tone left no room for argument. The rebellious glint in his eyes made him look like a defiant teenager ready to fight the world.

Taoist Qingyun could only sigh in defeat. “Fine. With you watching over her, I can rest easier. But remember, until everything in the Yu family is resolved, you absolutely cannot take her away. Once it’s done… if she’s still unhappy there, then you can decide for yourself.”
