“Sweetheart, what did you mean just now? You said that chubby kid has karmic sins on him?” Yu Shanhe had also heard his daughter’s parting words, and curiosity itched at him until he couldn’t help but ask.

Taking advantage of everyone’s distraction, Zhao Tang had already slipped upstairs. Once she was back in her room, she decided firmly that she wouldn’t go out and invite more trouble.

Yu Shanhe didn’t even remember her now, well, to be precise, whenever Niannian was around, he couldn’t see anyone else at all. He could scold or discipline others later. There was always time for that.

Right now, gossip took priority.

Niannian lifted her little chin slightly and patiently explained to her father.

“Mm, when I saw that little boy today, I immediately got a very uncomfortable feeling. So I did a quick divination for him, it came out as a great misfortune. Then I checked the source of that misfortune, and found that he likes to bully small animals.”

“He must have killed no fewer than thirty cats and dogs, and all through torture. That’s why the resentment and karmic filth clinging to him are so heavy. Cats and dogs have spirits; they understand people’s hearts, but they’re weak. One or two don’t matter much, but if their vengeful souls pile up, they’re as fearsome as evil ghosts.”

“Animals have pure hearts. If that little boy truly repents and properly performs a ritual to release the souls of those cats and dogs, he might still escape disaster.”

Listening to his daughter’s words, Yu Shanhe felt a chill run down his spine.

Thirty-something cats and dogs. That’s thirty-something lives.

“All of those were killed by that fat kid?” Yu Shanhe almost couldn’t believe his ears and quickly asked again.

Niannian nodded solemnly.

Terrifying. That child was about the same age as Zhao Tang, only seven years old this year. A seven-year-old who tortures and kills animals… Now he truly believed the saying that some people are born wicked.

But calling the police would do no good. Even if they had evidence, a seven-year-old child would only get a verbal lecture at most.

If the pets had owners, there might be some compensation. If not, the matter would be dropped entirely. No real punishment at all.

“What a sin. A child that young, yet already so full of malice… Sweetheart, you’d better stay far away from him.”

In his heart, Yu Shanhe had already marked the fat boy as dangerous. People who tortured animals were rarely normal, many had psychological issues. Maybe even antisocial tendencies.

His daughter was so soft and adorable; he couldn’t let her be hurt by someone like that.

“Don’t worry, Daddy. If he doesn’t do as I said, he won’t live long anyway, and he won’t get another chance to come near me.” Niannian nodded sweetly, her tone calm and obedient.

Yu Shanhe didn’t think much of it. Just as his daughter said, evil deeds bring self-destruction. If you create evil karma, you deserve the retribution that follows. Still, he doubted the boy and his mother would listen to Niannian.

They’d probably just call her crazy behind their backs.

“Dad, I’m back.”

Just then, the front door opened, and Yu Sheng came bustling in from outside.

That afternoon, he had been called to the police station to give another statement. Originally, Yu Shanhe should’ve gone, but there had been an important company meeting, so he sent his son instead. He hadn’t expected it to take so long.

“Mm. We saved you some dinner, go eat.”

“I’ll eat later. Dad, I’ve got something to tell you, the maid is dead.”

Yu Sheng had no appetite now. He’d been held at the station all evening because of the nanny’s death, and he was dying to tell his father about it.

Yu Shanhe only raised an eyebrow, not particularly surprised.

When they’d confronted the nanny before, hadn’t his daughter said that as soon as the woman went home, she’d be haunted by her own daughter’s vengeful spirit and die an unnatural death?

By his calculation, the timing matched. “Oh.”

“Dad, that’s all you’ve got to say? That woman died weirdly! She died in detention, her body was covered in bruises, like she’d been beaten, but she was in solitary confinement with cameras everywhere. No one could’ve gotten close to her!”

“And none of the injuries were fatal. The coroner said she died of sudden cardiac arrest, but she never had a heart condition. The final report said she was literally scared to death. Isn’t that creepy?”

Yu Sheng’s reaction was the complete opposite of his father’s. For Yu Shanhe, when Niannian was around, everyone else disappeared from his sight.

For Yu Sheng, as long as Niannian wasn’t speaking, his brain automatically ignored her presence. Like now, he didn’t even think twice about discussing death and ghosts in front of a little girl.

Yu Shanhe shot him a sharp glare, cutting him off mid-rant.

“Enough. What’s it got to do with you whether she’s dead or not? She got what she deserved. Even if she hadn’t died now, she’d have been sentenced to death sooner or later. Go eat your dinner and stop getting on my nerves.”

Teenage boys in their rebellious phase, what was there to find enjoyable about them? He’d much rather spend time chatting with his soft, sweet little girl.

Too lazy to deal with his scatterbrained son, Yu Shanhe bent down, scooped Niannian up, and carried her upstairs.

Yu Sheng rubbed his nose awkwardly, a bit embarrassed but not angry. Watching his little sister’s back as she disappeared upstairs, he found himself lost in thought.

Maybe his sister wasn’t as useless as he’d imagined. Maybe that temple where she grew up wasn’t some scammer’s den after all. If that was the case, maybe he could let go of his prejudice and try to get along with her?

Yeah, she was his real sister, after all. He should treat her better from now on.

The nanny’s death had changed how Yu Sheng saw Niannian. And with his little sister’s birthday coming up in just a few days, he was already wondering what gift to buy her.

Meanwhile, Yu Shanhe had carried his daughter to her princess-themed bedroom.

After chatting happily with her for a while, he went off to his study to work.

Three more days! Just three more days until his daughter’s birthday! He needed to finish all his work before then, so he could give her the perfect celebration.

The doting father attacked his paperwork with newfound enthusiasm.

Niannian, keeping her good habits of early to bed and early to rise, washed up and snuggled obediently into bed.

Over the next few days, Zhao Tang was surprisingly quiet, so much so that she started deliberately avoiding Yu Sheng.

Yu Sheng found it strange. The sister who used to cling to him constantly was now dodging him?

Unable to resist, he went to her room to ask.

Seeing Yu Sheng’s clueless face, Zhao Tang immediately realized he clearly knew nothing about the fat boy incident. A thought flickered, and a plan took shape.

Pursing her lips, she said softly, “I didn’t mean to avoid you, Brother. I just didn’t want Niannian to get angry if I got too close to you.”

“She wouldn’t. Niannian isn’t that petty. Don’t worry so much, your brother will always love you.” Hearing that excuse again, Yu Sheng couldn’t help feeling helpless.

Thinking back to his sister’s delicate little face, he instinctively felt Zhao Tang was just overthinking things. So his tone softened, even a bit protective.

Zhao Tang lowered her eyes, hiding her expression. But her tightly clenched fists betrayed the hatred burning inside her.
