- Chapter 30 - Don’t Panic When You’re Wrongly Accused
Niannian looked suspiciously at the chubby little boy.
The other kids, fine, she’d admit she did hit them. After all, she had actually laid hands on them. But this chubby one? She didn’t recognize him at all.
The other children might have had bad tempers, but none of them carried any karmic filth. A little fight with them was just… friendly communication.
But this chubby boy, ugh, she didn’t even want to touch him. Just one tap felt unlucky.
“Daddy, I didn’t hit him.” Niannian’s soft, milky voice calmly stated the facts.
Yu Shanhe didn’t even need to think, of course his daughter was telling the truth. He immediately nodded in agreement. “My daughter said she didn’t hit him, so she definitely didn’t.”
The chubby boy’s mother was so furious her nose nearly went crooked. When it came to spoiling children, she’d clearly met her match today. “She beat my son up like this, of course she won’t admit it! How could anyone believe such a lie?”
Yu Shanhe rolled his eyes. Believe it or not, he believed it.
“Daddy, little sister didn’t hit Fangfang, but she pushed him, and then he hit the wall and got that bump on his head.” Zhao Tang suddenly chimed in.
The chubby boy’s parents were her last chance to teach Yu Niannian a lesson. If they gave up too, then all her careful scheming today would have been for nothing.
Zhao Tang grew anxious, afraid the chubby boy’s parents might back down. So she ignored Yu Shanhe’s dark expression and pretended to be troubled by her conscience, adding more fuel to the fire.
After all, among those present, only she, the chubby boy, and Niannian were there when it happened. The rest were all on her side anyway, especially the chubby boy, who had suffered the most.
So no matter what actually happened, black could be called white if she said it was. But Zhao Tang failed to notice that the moment she spoke, Yu Shanhe’s expression changed completely.
His face turned dark as a storm cloud, and he looked at her as though she were a stranger, cold, distant, assessing her from head to toe.
When Zhao Tang looked up and met that gaze, her heart skipped a beat. Still, she forced herself to stay calm, pretending to be innocent and pure.
“Did you hear that? Even your own daughter says so! Are you still going to deny that your brat hit my son? We have a witness!” The chubby boy’s mother perked right up, fanning the flames Zhao Tang had started.
Yu Shanhe narrowed his eyes; his gaze turned sharp and frosty. His lips curved in a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “So what do you want, then?”
“My son suffered for nothing, and I’m not unreasonable,” the woman said. “Since it’s between kids, let the kids handle it. Your daughter hurt my son, so my son should hit her back. Then we’ll call it even.”
An eye for an eye, that was her plan from the start.
Their family wasn’t short on money, so there was no need for compensation. Besides, they had no business ties with Yu Shanhe’s family and probably never would. So there was no reason to compromise or play nice.
This was the only way to vent her anger and her son’s.
“You want him to hit me back? Because that lying bad sister said I hit him? But I didn’t touch him at all.” Niannian finally spoke, confused in her tone.
Hearing his daughter argue back, Yu Shanhe couldn’t help but feel proud. “That’s right, his daughter wasn’t some pushover. If she was in the right, she should speak up for herself.”
“I’m not lying! I really saw it. Little sister, you pushed him!” Suddenly accused of lying, Zhao Tang’s little body trembled, and tears rolled down her cheeks, painting the picture of a poor, wronged girl.
“When did I ever push him?” Niannian looked at Zhao Tang like she was an idiot. And somehow, Zhao Tang could understand that look and it made her fume.
“It was when Brother Fangfang said he wanted to be friends with you! Daddy, I’m not lying!” Then Zhao Tang turned pitifully to the chubby boy’s mother, acting all soft and kind. “Auntie, I’m sorry. I’ll apologize on her behalf. Niannian’s still little and doesn’t know any better. Please forgive her, okay?”
Zhao Tang alternated between looking pitiful at Yu Shanhe and sympathetic at the other parent, trying to win both sides.
Yu Shanhe didn’t even flinch, but the chubby boy’s mother’s heart softened immediately. She knew Zhao Tang and her son were good friends, they often played together. And because she liked Zhao Tang, she also favored her.
“Hah! Typical of country folk, no manners at all. Look at Tangtang, how well-behaved she is. President Yu, I know your real daughter went missing and you’re upset, but adopting a sensible girl like Tangtang should be enough, right? Why bring home just anyone? Aren’t you afraid you’ll bring disaster into your house one day?” The chubby boy’s mother spoke without restraint, cruelly rubbing salt into old wounds.
In the past, those words might have crushed Yu Shanhe. But now? Niannian was his biological daughter. He had found her! And not only that, she’s amazing! One could take on five!
“Niannian is my biological daughter,” Yu Shanhe said evenly. “She never lies. If she says she didn’t hit your son, then she didn’t.”
The woman’s eyes widened in shock. “What, Niannian was Yu Shanhe’s real daughter? The Yu family’s lost child… had been found? But how come there hasn’t been a single rumor about it?”
“So what if she’s your real daughter? My son’s bump is real! What, are you saying he hurt himself? I don’t care who she is, this ends my way, or your family’s not getting away with this!” The chubby boy’s mother dug her heels in, refusing to back down.
Niannian glanced at her father, then at Zhao Tang, and finally fixed her gaze on the chubby boy.
Her Third Senior Brother had told her before, if you’re wrongly accused and no one believes your explanation, then you might as well make the false accusation true. At least then, you’d stop disappointing everyone’s expectations.
Niannian felt she’d already explained herself well enough, short, simple, and truthful. Since no one believed her, she might as well do as her brother said.
“Auntie, I agree with you.” Niannian grinned, showing her little teeth. Her words instantly silenced both arguing parents, they didn’t even know how to respond.
The chubby boy’s mother was the first to recover. “Oh? So you admit it now? President Yu, what do you have to say for yourself?”
“Auntie, wait a second.” Before Yu Shanhe could reply, Niannian walked toward the chubby boy, giving his mother a look that said relax.
Everyone stared in confusion, not knowing what the little dumpling was planning. Only Yu Shanhe suddenly broke into a knowing smile. That gentle, sweet expression on his daughter’s face, he knew it all too well.
Wasn’t that the same smile she’d worn when she exorcised ghosts in his office the other day? And what did that smile mean? It meant his daughter was about to handle this herself.
Perfect!
Yu Shanhe silently cheered her on from the sidelines. And sure enough, little Niannian didn’t disappoint. She clenched her tiny pink fist and swung it straight at the chubby boy’s face.
“Ow!!” The boy screamed, clutching his head.
When he pulled his hand away, there was a brand-new lump swelling on the right side of his forehead.
Earlier, he’d bumped the left side. Now, with matching lumps on both sides, he looked like he’d grown a pair of horns.
Yu Shanhe nodded to himself in satisfaction.
Yep!
Just as he thought, whenever his daughter smiled like that, someone was definitely about to have a very bad day.
