After the company’s problems were finally resolved, Yu Shanhe wanted to take his little girl with him to the office again, but Niannian simply refused.

Ever since she’d come down from the mountain, Niannian had encountered far too many things that her small head couldn’t quite figure out.

Now that her father’s company was safe, she didn’t think she needed to keep acting as his personal bodyguard. Anyway, her father’s bad luck these days was at most the kind where he might choke while drinking water.

Nothing serious at all. It was much better to stay home and focus on her studies and cultivation.

Yu Shanhe tried to persuade her, but no matter how he coaxed or reasoned, his daughter wouldn’t budge. In the end, after she promised repeatedly that she wouldn’t run off somewhere, he gave up on bringing her along.

He arranged for his assistant to deliver her three meals a day. It was troublesome, yes, but at least his daughter wouldn’t go hungry.

As for hiring a new nanny, that couldn’t be rushed. He had to be cautious and observe carefully; he couldn’t afford to bring in another one like the last. His poor heart wouldn’t survive it.

Niannian was delighted. She could finally stay at home as she wished, and for three straight days she followed her old routine to a T, just like back at the Daoist temple.

Her days were peaceful and simple.

That morning, Niannian climbed out of bed early and began her morning lessons. First, her daily prayer to the Grandmaster Patriarch, then some stretching and boxing exercises. Once she was done, she went downstairs for breakfast.

But as soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs and saw Zhao Tang’s face, Niannian paused in surprise.

These past few days, Zhao Tang had left the house at around eight every morning for school, and in the evenings she went straight to cram classes. She never came home before nine, their schedules perfectly missed each other.

Even though they lived under the same roof, they hadn’t crossed paths once. But today… the little dumpling glanced at the smartwatch her father had given her.

“Isn’t it already nine o’clock? Why is the mean sister still here?”

Niannian didn’t like this sister. For the past few days, she’d been doing her morning practice in her room and only coming out after breakfast, all to avoid Zhao Tang.

She hadn’t expected to run into her so early in the day. Niannian decided to ignore her completely, “I’ll just eat, go upstairs afterward, and spend the day practicing talisman drawing, studying formations, and cultivating inner energy.”

As long as she stayed in her room and didn’t deal with the bad sister, everything would be fine.

Surprisingly, Zhao Tang didn’t talk to her either. Perhaps because Yu Sheng wasn’t around, no one to back her up.

Breakfast went by peacefully enough. After eating, Niannian went upstairs, took out a stack of yellow talisman paper, and began practicing.

She calmed her breath, focused her mind, and wrote with full concentration. After drawing over a dozen talismans, her handwriting was still just as ugly as ever.

Maybe she was too absorbed in her work, because she didn’t notice the footsteps approaching her room. The door suddenly banged open and her brush jerked mid-stroke.

“Great! Talisman ruined.”

Niannian turned around toward the door, anger flashing in her eyes. When she saw Zhao Tang standing there with that same disgusted, disdainful expression, her irritation burned even hotter.

“Of all times to disturb me, why now? Didn’t she know that interrupting a cultivator during practice was taboo? If I lost focus and my energy went awry, I could actually hurt myself!”

“Get out. Don’t disturb me.” Niannian rarely showed a cold expression, but now her little face was serious and icy enough to make Zhao Tang uneasy.

Still, when Zhao Tang saw the little girl’s Daoist robe and the lavish princess-style room that clashed so completely with it, jealousy flared up again.

“What was she even showing off for? Just a bumpkin from the countryside! So what if she was the biological daughter? Mom and brother still liked me more!”

She’s also a daughter of the Yu family, a young lady of the house! Why should this country girl get such a nice room? Why did her nanny have to be fired because of this brat?

The more she thought about it, the angrier she got.

That nanny had been so kind to her, always flattering her, taking care of her in every way. When she realized the nanny was gone a few days ago, she’d asked Yu Sheng about it.

Her brother told her that since the nanny had accidentally let the “bumpkin” slip out of the house, their father got furious and fired her.

As far as Zhao Tang was concerned, the nanny had done the right thing. If only that country bumpkin had stayed lost forever!

“Hah, like I’d actually want to come into your room.” Zhao Tang lifted her chin high, full of contempt, every gesture radiating arrogance.

“Get out!” Niannian truly thought her bad sister must have something wrong with her brain. She said she didn’t want to come in, yet she kept barging in over and over.

“I just came to tell you, my friends are coming over soon. You’d better stay quietly in your room and don’t come out. With how you’re dressed, you’d just embarrass me! I don’t want anyone knowing I have a country bumpkin for a little sister or they’ll laugh at me too!” With that, Zhao Tang stormed out, slamming the door so hard that Niannian’s small desk trembled from the impact.

Niannian stared at the closed door, scratching her head.

“What on earth was that about? Her friends coming over, what did that have to do with me? Wasn’t this my father’s house? Why couldn’t I walk around in my own home just because this sister had guests?”

Utter nonsense.

“Sigh… Don’t argue with fools, don’t fight with idiots. Third Senior Brother was right, arguing with people who have something wrong with their head only makes you angry.”  Niannian muttered to herself, recited the Calming Heart Chant twice, and let the irritation fade away.

She had no intention of caring about what her bad sister said.

She hopped off her small stool, locked her door just in case, and went back to drawing talismans. She practiced the entire morning, until her hand grew sore from gripping the brush.

Reaching for her cup, she realized it was empty. Without hesitation, Niannian picked it up, opened her door, and went downstairs to get water.

As soon as she opened the door, laughter and chatter drifted up from below. Niannian remembered Zhao Tang’s weird warning earlier, but she didn’t pay it much mind.

She just went downstairs on her own.

“Support! Where’s my support? Come on, team fight!”

“Hey, don’t steal my kill!”

“Ugh! Lost again! That’s three games in a row, Mo Xiaomo are you even trying!?”

Several kids were shouting and groaning, clutching their phones in frustration. After filling her cup, Niannian glanced over curiously, puzzled, “What was so upsetting about staring at a little glowing screen?”

Zhao Tang suddenly noticed her gaze, turned around, and her expression soured instantly. She dropped her phone and snapped arrogantly, “Didn’t I tell you not to come out? Honestly, you know I have guests and you couldn’t even change your clothes?”

The other children turned to look at Niannian too. Their first reaction, amazement. “Wow! What an adorable little girl!”

Their second reaction was confusion and frowns.

“Tsk! What a weird, old-fashioned outfit!”
