The unlucky ghost’s inner wails went unheard. Even if someone could hear them, no one would care. Whether he meant to or not, harming people was still harming people, and that always came with a price.

“Niannian, who were you just talking to? Is there still a ghost in here?” Yu Shanhe had been watching his little girl swing her sword and talk to thin air, and his tongue was practically frozen from confusion.

“There isn’t one now!” Which, of course, meant there had been one just moments ago.

A mix of emotions surged in Yu Shanhe’s heart. He didn’t even know what to say. As a father, he felt completely useless.

“Daddy, do you know an uncle who wears a black robe?”

From the unlucky ghost, Niannian had learned that the person trying to harm her father was some “black-robed uncle.” She had no clue where to start looking, so she turned her curious gaze toward her silly victim of a dad.

“Black-robed uncle?” Yu Shanhe thought hard. After thinking for quite a while, he still couldn’t recall ever meeting anyone dressed that strangely. Finally, he shook his head.

Niannian wasn’t surprised. Someone who could trick a ghost into harming others and transfer karmic backlash must be the kind of rat who hides in the dark gutters of the world.

It wasn’t strange that her father didn’t know him. She had only asked on the off chance he might.

Niannian cast another divination for her father. Thankfully, with the unlucky ghost captured, although her father’s bad luck still lingered, it was no longer fatal.

That couldn’t be helped.

The ghost had been hiding inside Yan Li’s body for years, constantly eroding the company’s fortune. Such long-standing corruption couldn’t be fixed overnight.

What puzzled her most was how the spellcaster had targeted only her father. Niannian couldn’t help but sigh inwardly, her dad’s life force was really strong.

If it had been anyone with an average fate, being plagued by that ghost for a year would’ve been enough to destroy their family completely. But her dad? After two whole years, he still had more than half his luck left.

Still, another question filled her small head.

The company carried all of her father’s life’s work and was tied to his career fortune. The unlucky ghost must have caused small mishaps in the beginning, issues with business operations, maybe.

Over time, that would naturally lead to financial loss. And after losing enough money, it would start to damage his overall fortune.

When her father’s bad luck had reached a point where it clung to him like death itself, that couldn’t have been the ghost’s doing alone.

If it were, the company would have long gone bankrupt, and they’d be broke and homeless by now. Only that level of misfortune would affect his fate line so badly.

But her father’s company is still doing fine. His career might not be thriving, but it isn’t on the verge of ruin either. So how had it reached the point of threatening his life?

Niannian quickly sorted through everything she’d learned about spiritual arts, but no matter how she searched her mind, she couldn’t recall any spell that could do such a thing.

Of course, there was another possibility, the spellcaster had used two methods together.

The ghost was only one part of it. There had to be something else still influencing her father. Still, from what she could sense, the company itself was now clean.

Ah… her Second Senior Brother was right after all, “Read ten thousand books, travel ten thousand miles.” Knowledge in your head alone isn’t enough without real-world experience. And that’s exactly her situation right now.

The little dumpling sighed helplessly, then shrugged it off. “Daddy, you should call someone to send that auntie to the hospital. I’m going to look around outside again.”

Just to be safe, Niannian decided to recheck the entire office building, carefully and thoroughly, leaving no corner unchecked to make sure no more malevolent things were lurking where her father often stayed.

The tiny dumpling walked off briskly, her little peachwood sword clutched in her hand, her small steps echoing “da-da-da-da” out the office door.

Behind her, her poor father stood frozen in confusion, staring at the still-convulsing Yan Li on the floor. With no choice, he called his assistant to summon an ambulance. Not because he was kind-hearted, but because if she really died in his company, in his own office no less, there was no way he could explain it.

Soon, Yan Li was clumsily carried out of the company.

The paramedics were too busy saving her to care about her appearance, so nearly every employee in the building saw her twitching and foaming at the mouth.

Fortunately for Yu Shanhe, Yan Li had been a tyrant in the company for years and had terrible relationships with everyone. Rumors spread like wildfire that she’d had a seizure from the shock of being fired.

No one suspected Yu Shanhe at all. That alone saved him a world of trouble.

Not long after the ambulance left, Niannian’s little legs carried her slowly down to the first floor. The receptionist sat up straight, eyes glued to the little dumpling, afraid she’d run off if she blinked.

But Niannian’s senses were razor sharp. She quickly noticed the beautiful sister staring right at her. Niannian thought maybe the pretty lady wanted something from her.

Feeling that intense gaze, she turned and looked back and immediately sensed something.

After checking that there was no evil presence on the first floor, she walked straight toward the front desk. Her big, glistening eyes stared silently for a moment as she rummaged through her little crossbody bag.

The receptionist grew nervous under that stare.

Had she offended this young miss somehow? No way… right?

Just as she was about to speak, a square piece of yellow paper appeared before her eyes.

“Pretty sister, this is for you. It’ll protect your life for seven days. If you still want a permanent solution after that, you can come find me.” Niannian pressed the talisman into the stunned woman’s hand, then turned and walked away toward the elevator, leaving behind only her small, lonely silhouette.

The receptionist blinked at the yellow paper in her hand, covered in odd scribbles that looked like chicken scratch.

Was this some new children’s game?

She considered tossing it in the trash, but then Niannian’s adorable little face popped into her mind, and she couldn’t bear to hurt the child’s feelings. So she tucked it casually into her pocket.

“Oh well, it’s just a piece of paper. Better to keep it, in case the little miss came back later wanting to “play” again. It’d be awful to disappoint her.”

The poor woman had no idea that the next few nights awaiting her would be long, terrifying, and sleepless.

Niannian, meanwhile, had already forgotten about it. When she returned to the office, the coffee table was piled high with pastries and snacks that her father had ordered.

The little dumpling was overjoyed, a bottle of milk in one hand, a snowflake crisp in the other, munching away happily.

Yu Shanhe glanced at the calendar on his desk, where a certain date had been circled in red.

Looking at his daughter, his eyes were full of tenderness. Her birthday was coming soon. He hadn’t celebrated it once in all these years.

After five long years, this would be the first time he’d throw her a birthday party, and it had to be a grand one.
