The car slowly pulled into the neighborhood. As Yu Shanhe got out, carrying his daughter in his arms, he happened to run into Yu Sheng at the gate.

“Dad, you’re back.” Yu Sheng greeted him respectfully, his face calm. When he saw Niannian, he only gave her a quick glance before looking away.

His daughter had almost gone missing earlier. Before leaving home, Yu Shanhe had reminded this son repeatedly to take good care of his little sister. Yet now the child had gone missing and Yu Sheng didn’t even look the slightest bit worried.

That made Yu Shanhe furious.

He gave a cold snort and ignored his son, carrying his soft, fragrant little girl inside the house. The moment they entered, Yu Shanhe froze.

The nanny, who had just come out of the kitchen, also froze when she saw him. The tray in her hands slipped from her grasp in shock and fell to the floor with a loud crash.

This time, it really was an accident.

Yu Shanhe glanced down at the contents of the tray and in an instant, his anger flared uncontrollably.

Caviar, abalone, matsutake mushrooms, imported bread, and ham… the entire tray was filled with luxurious ingredients.

Then his mind replayed what Taoist Qingyun had told him over the phone, “Your daughter was so hungry she had to beg for food on the street!” And the memory of Niannian scarfing down her food in the car just moments ago only made his heart ache more.

“I called you, why didn’t you answer? And what’s all this?” Even though he was seething, Yu Shanhe still kept his composure. His tone was sharp but controlled.

He’d been tied up with company matters for a long time, either traveling for business or leaving early and returning late. He almost never came home for lunch.

That was why the nanny had dared to act so recklessly, bullying Niannian right under his nose.

When she saw the child heading out earlier, she hadn’t cared at all.

Just a five-year-old toddler, she thought. And she didn’t even eat, no strength, no stamina. How far could she get? Probably not even out of the neighborhood.

So she didn’t say a word, simply watching coldly as the little dumpling toddled out the door. What she hadn’t expected was that Yu Shanhe himself would bring Niannian back home.

And seeing the man’s thunderous expression, she instantly knew she was in trouble and hurried to explain.

“I’m so sorry, sir. I just finished serving Miss and Young Master their meal, and I went to prepare my own breakfast. These things in the fridge were close to expiring, I didn’t want the children to get sick from eating them, but it seemed a waste to throw them away, so I used them myself. As for my phone, I left it on the coffee table, so I didn’t hear it ring while I was in the kitchen.”

The nanny felt her explanation was flawless.

When she was hired, no one said she had to keep her phone on her at all times. Missing a call once in a while shouldn’t be a big deal.

As for the food, all the packaging had already been thrown in the trash. These rich people and their kids would never stoop to digging through garbage to check.

If she said it was expired, then it was expired.

“And do you know why Niannian was outside?” Yu Shanhe narrowed his eyes.

He might not have managed his company personally for years, but he’d built it from the ground up, a self-made man who knew better than anyone how to read people’s faces.

The woman’s mouth was saying “sorry,” but her eyes were full of guilt and her expression showed not a hint of remorse. How could he possibly believe her?

This nanny had to go today!

“I… I don’t know either. After the young miss finished breakfast, I went to clean up the table and dishes, so I didn’t notice.”

Every word she said pushed the blame toward Niannian, implying the child had been disobedient and went out to play on her own. She was too busy with housework to watch over a naughty kid.

“Oh? You’re saying my daughter did eat and went out on her own? That’s funny, because I heard she was so hungry she had to leave home to ask strangers for help!”

Yu Shanhe’s voice rose sharply. When he picked up Niannian earlier, he’d asked the old man what happened.

The old man had said that after just a few words, the child’s stomach had growled loudly, and she’d devoured a bag of bread and a carton of milk in a few bites, clearly starving.

If she’d really eaten breakfast and the nanny had been doing her job, how could Niannian have ended up like that?

“That’s impossible! The young miss had a few bites, but she said breakfast didn’t taste good. I had to coax her for a long time before she ate a little.”

The lies rolled off her tongue as smooth as silk, not a flicker of shame on her face.

Yu Shanhe didn’t want to hear another word. He looked down at the little dumpling in his arms and gently asked, “Sweetheart, why did you go outside? And why didn’t you eat breakfast?”

“Huh? Auntie dropped the plate and said the meals were all pre-portioned, so when mine fell on the floor, there was none left. Niannian was super hungry, but it’s okay, I’m a big girl now, so I went hunting for food myself!”

Niannian tilted her head back, smiling brightly, her expression full of pride, ‘See? Aren’t I amazing? Praise me!’

There wasn’t a trace of anger at being wronged.

Yu Shanhe felt both helpless and proud. His daughter had such a big heart, kind, cheerful, and forgiving, even when falsely accused.

“Mhm, Niannian is amazing.” He followed her lead and praised her, earning an even bigger smile.

Her carefree grin made him want to laugh and sigh at the same time. He decided he’d have to pamper her more from now on, maybe even let her develop a little temper, otherwise she’d get pushed around everywhere she went.

But Yu Shanhe was overthinking it.

It wasn’t that his daughter had no temper, she just hadn’t realized the nanny was talking about her. Because the nanny’s “story” barely resembled what actually happened. It wasn’t just exaggerated, it was completely fabricated.

Since the nanny hadn’t mentioned any names, Niannian simply assumed she was talking about someone else. Had the woman dared to say Niannian’s name even once, the little dumpling would’ve ripped her apart with words until she cried.

But right now, to her father, the little girl looked like nothing more than a soft, innocent bunny, sweet and harmless.

He hugged her tighter, turned his cold gaze on the nanny, and said icily, “Pack your things and get out of my house. I’ll pay you for this month, but after today, I don’t ever want to see you again.”
