On a narrow country road, a top-tier Porsche Cayenne looked completely out of place.

In the passenger seat, a teenage boy sat with an expression full of impatience and irritation, especially whenever his eyes flicked toward the little girl in the back seat, who looked no older than four or five.

“Sob… sob… Shihu doesn’t want me anymore… Shihu kicked me off the mountain…”

The little girl muttered softly, repeating only those two lines over and over. Big teardrops slid down her cheeks, making her look heartbreakingly pitiful.

“Shut up already! Crying, whining, mumbling, so annoying! What’s so great about some run-down country temple that you have to cry over it? Honestly, it was a mistake to even bring you back!” The boy finally snapped, shouting over his shoulder.

The little dumpling froze in fear, her tears stopping for an instant. Just as the boy began to feel proud of himself for silencing her, the girl suddenly burst into an even louder wail.

“Waaah! Mean brother! I don’t want you! I want Senior Brother! Waaah! I want Senior Brother and Shihu!”

Yu Niannian was utterly heartbroken. If it weren’t for this fierce, bad-tempered villain showing up, she would be nestled in her master’s arms right now, reciting scriptures, practicing talisman drawing, watching her senior brothers chop firewood and cook, playing with the temple animals, or tugging the beard of Grandpa Ghost.

The bad man had said he was her brother. Her biological brother, and that he’d come especially to take her home.

But Yu Niannian’s little head had no idea what “home” meant. She only knew she wanted to stay with her master and senior brothers. She didn’t want to leave the temple at all.

She had cried herself hoarse clinging to her master’s leg, but the master who always doted on her said that her family was in trouble, possibly facing ruin, and that she had to go. He insisted she leave, saying she must “repay their kindness.”

Repay kindness? What did that even mean?

Yu Niannian didn’t understand. She only knew that her master no longer wanted her and had sent her down the mountain, handing her over to this big, mean bully.

“So annoying,” the boy, Yu Sheng, grumbled, growing even more irritable at her sobbing. He shoved in his earphones, turned up the music, and ignored his cheap little sister altogether.

Anyway, she’ll stop crying eventually once she gets tired.

Just as he expected, by the time they arrived home, Yu Niannian had cried herself out. When Yu Sheng turned around to open the car door, he found the little dumpling slumped against it, fast asleep, her breathing soft and even.

Her tiny face was flawless, almost doll-like, except for her swollen, walnut-shaped eyes that slightly spoiled her delicate looks.

If only this “cheap sister” could stay this quiet forever, Yu Sheng thought, maybe she wouldn’t be so unbearable.

He signaled the driver to carry her inside, then strode toward the villa himself. When the door opened, a man was already waiting in the living room, his eyes were bloodshot.

The moment he saw Yu Sheng walk in alone, the hope and excitement in his gaze dimmed. “Where’s your sister? You didn’t bring her back?”

“Tch. She’s in the back.” Yu Sheng rolled his eyes, pointing at the driver behind him before heading straight to the kitchen for a drink.

The driver entered carrying the drowsy Yu Niannian. Still half-asleep, she blinked groggily, curiosity flickering as she looked at the middle-aged man walking toward her.

Oh! Such a heavy misfortune surrounding him. Yu Niannian turned her head, glancing around the house, and her eyes widened even more. Oh! So many ghosts!

“Niannian, I’m your father. Come, let Daddy hold you!” The man’s eyes instantly reddened when he saw her. His hands trembled as he reached out, almost afraid she might vanish like a dream.

Yu Niannian froze for a moment, then lifted her tiny arms and burrowed into his embrace. “Daddy?”

“Yes!” The man, Yu Shanhe, burst into tears of joy, clutching the soft little girl in his arms as though holding the most precious treasure in the world.

This was his long-lost daughter, the one he had missed and searched for every day for five long years.

Five years ago, his wife had been weak after childbirth, and he hadn’t paid enough attention to their newborn baby girl. In a single moment of carelessness, she was stolen from the hospital, vanishing without a trace.

For five years, he had never stopped searching. But no matter what he did, she could not be found. Just when he had almost given up hope, a phone call three days ago and a small lock of hair had reignited it.

His daughter had finally come home!

“Don’t cry, don’t cry. Huuu—no more crying.” Yu Niannian cupped her father’s cheeks in her chubby little hands and puffed a soft breath onto him.

She could feel that he was sad, just like she had been when forced down the mountain. So, she instinctively tried to comfort him the way her master used to comfort her.

“Good girl,” Yu Shanhe said with a teary smile. “Daddy won’t cry anymore. Come on, let Daddy show you your room.” He carried the little dumpling upstairs, beaming with joy and relief.

Yu Sheng watched the entire scene, completely dumbfounded.

This biological sister of his, who had looked at him with such resentment earlier, was suddenly sweet and obedient in front of their dad. How could she change so fast?

“Brother.” At the corner of the staircase stood another little girl in a frilly princess dress. She looked nervous, shuffling slowly toward Yu Sheng.

Seeing her, Yu Sheng’s eyes softened. He patted her head gently and said in a low, reassuring voice, “Be good. I told you before, you’re the only sister I recognize. You’ll always be part of this family. That won’t ever change.”

Meanwhile, Yu Niannian, still in her father’s arms, gasped in delight the moment she saw the bedroom decorated in shades of sky blue and soft pink.

So pretty!

“How is it? Do you like it?” At her father’s question, Yu Niannian nodded eagerly, like a little pecking bird. “Thank you, Daddy. I like it very much!”

“I’m glad you do, I prepared all this just for you. If there’s anything missing or anything you don’t like, just tell Daddy, he’ll make it right.” Yu Shanhe set her down to explore the room, watching her with a face that practically glowed with fatherly affection.

Yu Niannian wandered around, inspecting every corner. She did find a few things she wasn’t quite happy about.

Like the big sister sitting at the desk, covered in blood. Or the big brother hanging from the crooked tree outside the window. And that aunt walking in circles with only half a head left.

It’s a bit crowded, honestly. Yu Niannian looked back at her father, a bit conflicted. Should she mention it?

In the end, she decided to ignore those little flaws. Her master always said one should be content with what they have.

Daddy had gone through so much trouble to prepare this beautiful room for her, it wouldn’t be nice to nitpick over a few tiny imperfections.

“Daddy, I like everything! Oh… and Daddy, I have a gift for you too!”
