“Hi, I’m MinshiZzz! If you enjoy my work, feel free to reach out or share your thoughts. I’d love to hear from you. Thank you so much for your support!”

Cheng Muye had always prided herself on her strength. To her, seeking comfort from another’s arms felt like weakness, and she despised weakness. Yet, in Tang Anhe’s embrace, the tension in her frayed nerves eased, and even the pain in her leg seemed to lessen. For the first time in a long while, surrendering a little felt… comforting.

It truly felt miraculous.

Even more miraculous, a delicate thought crossed her mind—a poem: Come into my arms, or let me live in your heart. Silently love, silently rejoice.

There could be no wish more beautiful than that.

Cheng Muye held her tightly, drinking in her scent, the desire in her heart intensifying. How could she not love her? When she reached out to her, when she offered warmth even in the smallest gesture, it was enough to thaw the chill that had long lingered in her life.

After the doctor finished bandaging her, handed over a long list of instructions.

Yu Zhaoning recorded everything on her phone, but Cheng Letian, clearly impatient, interrupted, “It’s time to go. Muye, you’ll stay at Zhaoning’s villa. I’ll feel better knowing she’s taking care of you.”

“You don’t need to put on a show for me. I don’t need your reassurances. Besides, there’s no place safer than a hospital.” Cheng Muye shot back firmly.

Yet, even as she spoke, she watched Cheng Letian glance at Cheng Wu and command coldly, “Go get a wheelchair.”

Cheng Wu acknowledged with a nod and left the ward to fetch one, obeying without question.

“Girls are more likable when they behave.”

Hypocrisy!

A flicker of disgust crossed Cheng Muye’s eyes. She lowered her head, tightening her grip on Tang Anhe’s hand. She knew leaving the hospital was inevitable, some things couldn’t be avoided, but she couldn’t help wondering why Cheng Letian insisted she go despite her injuries.

“Brother Cheng, are you really leaving like this? What about your wound?” Tang Anhe’s voice trembled with worry as she looked at the bandaged leg, freshly treated and advised not to move.

Cheng Muye, sensing her concern, forced a pale smile and whispered, “It’s fine. Go back first. I’ll contact you later.”

Tang Anhe hesitated, reluctant to leave, but seeing her resolve, she couldn’t stay. She pressed once more, “Brother Cheng, please contact me. Please.”

Cheng Muye nodded, watching her leave with lingering reluctance, a mix of sweetness and bitterness stirring in her heart. There was no doubt that Tang Anhe liked her, and if that affection also carried romantic feelings, it would be an immense blessing for her.

Cheng Wu pushed the wheelchair forward. Yu Zhaoning moved to assist, but Cheng Wu stepped back, letting her handle it while he stood behind Cheng Letian.

Yu Zhaoning assisted her into the wheelchair. In the haste, there was no time to change her clothes, and she had, of course, completely forgotten her phone as well.

The group filed out of the hospital in a grand procession and climbed into a stretched Rolls-Royce.

Silence filled the car, not a single word was spoken.

Cheng Muye had been watching the road all along. When she realized the car wasn’t heading toward Yu Zhaoning’s villa but instead toward the Cheng residence, the truth hit her belatedly. She had been tricked.

“You lied to me?” she shot a glare at the man in front of her, disbelief flashing in her eyes. “I trusted your word, and yet… you’re nothing but a liar!”

Cheng Letian remained unflustered by the exposure of his ruse, smiling cheerfully. “Well done, child, that’s what they call deception in war!”

“Despicable!” she snapped.

“I was merely playing along.” the reply came lightly.

“That’s just sophistry!” Cheng Muye’s face flushed with anger. She clenched her fists, humiliation thick in her gaze. She had been too naive, still unaware of Cheng Letian’s cunning and relentless drive to accomplish his goals.

Being an elder, Cheng Letian didn’t wish to upset her too much. Seeing her scowl, he softened his tone and tried to soothe her.

“Muye, don’t be angry. My dear, the old house has the best food and accommodations, and there will be doctors to care for you. Isn’t that far better than being alone in that cold, disinfectant-filled hospital room?”

Cheng Muye’s eyes blazed with contempt as she spat out, “You’re always so selfish, domineering, and tyrannical, never thinking of anyone else. If you had even a little thought for your father, you wouldn’t have driven him to abandon his wife and daughter, ending in depression and suicide.”

“Impudent!”

“It’s because father never dared to defy you that he chose to die, avenging you in his own way!” Cheng Muye’s words struck like knives, fearless and unflinching. “Perhaps you were born cold-blooded and heartless, unmoved even by the deaths of those you loved. To you, nothing matters more than profit.”

“Shut up!”

Enraged, Cheng Letian lifted his cane and slammed it down onto Cheng Muye’s head.

“Bang!”

The impact made her groan, her eyes reddened, and her hatred surged, threatening to consume her completely. She despised this man with every fiber of her being, vowing never to forgive or see him again.

Clenching her lip, she let her anger spill out. “Do you even know about father’s memorial day? Have you ever visited his grave?”

“Don’t bring him up!” Cheng Letian roared, his face contorted with fury, giving him a formidable air. Sitting rigidly in the front seat, his voice thundered, “Rebellious child! Just like your father, ungrateful and a disgrace!”

The argument between grandfather and granddaughter escalated, voices sharp and heated. Outside, a red Maserati, driving alongside, suddenly sped up, swerving to block their path.

Cheng Wu slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a jarring halt. The sudden stop almost threw everyone forward.

Cheng Letian nearly slammed into the car seat, so angry that he shouted, “What’s going on?”

Cheng Wu hurriedly explained, “Mr. Cheng, it’s Miss Yu.”

Cheng Letian turned, frowning, and saw Yu Zhaoning outside. She had stepped out of the Maserati, approached, and knocked firmly on the car door.

“What are you doing, Zhaoning?” he demanded, clearly displeased as he rolled down the window.

Yu Zhaoning’s expression was calm and resolute. Without a word, she opened the door, pulled out the folding wheelchair, and helped Cheng Muye out with decisive efficiency.

Cheng Letian stared in stunned disbelief. He had never imagined anyone would dare confront him so boldly.

“What are you doing, Yu Zhaoning?!” he shouted, his eyes widened.

Yu Zhaoning’s face remained calm and serene, her expression composed. Though her tone was gentle, it carried an unmistakable authority. “Mr. Cheng, I am usually easy to get along with, but I do not tolerate being taken advantage of. If you promised that Muye could stay in my villa, then you must keep that promise. A gentleman’s word is as unbreakable as a four-horse chariot that cannot be turned back.”

If he had a beard, it would likely have shot off in sheer fury. He was so enraged that even the finger he pointed at her quivered uncontrollably.

“You damn fools! Are you all trying to start a rebellion?”

Yu Zhaoning didn’t respond. She turned and started pushing Cheng Muye away. A few bodyguards from the car tried to intervene, but she reacted instantly, grabbing one by the arm and hoisting him over her shoulder, then sweeping her leg to strike another in a vulnerable spot. Her expression was firm, her movements precise yet fierce.

Shen Si, watching from the car behind, sensed something was wrong and hurried out, shouting, “Yu Zhaoning, what are you doing?”

His voice drew a line of bodyguards toward them. The parked car, in a conspicuous spot, had also caught the attention of passersby, some of whom began taking photos.

Cheng Letian, a powerful businessman wary of public attention, whispered sharply, “Stop!”

Everyone paused and looked toward the car, but Yu Zhaoning seemed like a wooden figure, turned around, and continued pushing Cheng Muye in the wheelchair.

Shen Si, who had gone to great lengths to escort Cheng Muye back to the old house, grew anxious. “Mr. Cheng, do you want to stop this?” he asked.

Cheng Letian, already humiliated multiple times today, felt his anger boil. He clenched his jaw, restraining his words due to his status, and finally snapped, “Go back! I’ll deal with her myself!”

Cheng Muye’s defiance and audacity only fueled his desire to assert control. As a tycoon overseeing half the empire, he could not tolerate such blatant disregard from someone younger. He exhaled slowly, tightening his grip on his cane. Though aged, his ambition, will, and resolve remained unshakable. He was destined to defend all of this to the death.

Meanwhile, Cheng Muye settled into Yu Zhaoning’s car, feeling considerably more at ease and finally able to think about contacting Tang Anhe. Concerned for her safety, she wanted Tang Anhe nearby, like a living mural of comfort, but her phone was missing. After a moment, she recalled leaving it at the hospital.

“Back to the hospital. I forgot my phone,” she said.

“Since your injury prevents you from walking, I’ll have someone bring it to you,” Yu Zhaoning said.

Cheng Muye nodded in agreement. After a pause, she added, “I’m surprised you dared to challenge his authority.”

Yu Zhaoning smiled quietly, choosing her words carefully. Coming from a family that had once shared in the Cheng family’s prestige, she had been taught to show respect, friendliness, and courtesy toward the Cheng’s, especially their leader. She was willing to show respect, but only if it was genuinely deserved.

He had first tried to forcibly take Cheng Muye away, aggravating her leg injury. Then he manipulated her using his own reputation. Though she was merely observing, she would never allow anyone to bully her or those she cared about.

Sitting beside her, Yu Zhaoning met her gaze and spoke with calm conviction, each word deliberate and sincere, “Cheng Muye, do you believe I will protect you as well? Just as you promised to protect me when I was bitten by a snake?”

Cheng Muye didn’t want to recall the snake incident as it had left a bitter mark on their once-friendly bond.

She glanced at Yu Zhaoning’s bright, striking face, still radiant despite the bruised chin, but the sight gave her no comfort. Looking away, she focused on the passing scenery outside the window. Cheng Letian’s car had disappeared, the crowd dispersed, and everything that had just occurred felt surreal, like an absurd, distant play.

“I don’t need it,” she said finally, her tone and expression flat, detached.

Yu Zhaoning’s smile was steady, her voice firm and measured. “You do. You want to protect Tang Anhe, but if Mr. Cheng intervenes, your actions could only bring disaster to her. She’s just a minor celebrity, and with how ruthless Mr. Cheng is, a single move from him could destroy her. So, Cheng Muye… why reject my help?”

Her words struck true.

But Cheng Muye remained unafraid. Shaking her head, a small, determined smile playing on her lips, she said, “I’ll protect her with my life.”

Yu Zhaoning’s expression faltered, and after a long silence, she sighed. “You’ve inherited Uncle Cheng’s passionate blood.”

“Perhaps,” Cheng Muye admitted, “but I will never lose to that demon like he did.”

“Why such confidence?”

“Strength come from having no desires.”

She had lived the first half of her life in dazzling splendor, having witnessed a world full of brilliance. For the life ahead, Tang Anhe was her singular focus. To win her, to claim her, was her only thought—naturally, she would overcome any obstacle, be it god or demon.
