- Chapter 2 - The Nectar is Too Fragrant
She had long forgotten which lifetime it was. She only remembered that she seemed to have been the wife of a wealthy household. During that lifetime, she often did good deeds and helped the poor and weak, which allowed her to ascend to the celestial realm after death and reside in the Purple Cloud City.
Not long after arriving in Purple Cloud City, she caught the attention of the Queen Mother of the West. The Queen Mother made a request to the Jade Emperor to bring her under her wing for training.
She did not disappoint the Queen Mother, proving herself to be highly capable. The tasks assigned to her were always carried out with meticulous precision, earning her praise from the celestial immortals. She never forgot the Queen Mother’s teachings. In her spare time, she dedicated herself to practicing celestial techniques, reading scriptures, and cultivating her character.
She had a goal—she wanted to be a part of the celestial immortals.
She immersed herself in her cultivation, diligently and single-mindedly focusing on her practice every day. This unchanging, ascetic life continued until one day, when the Queen Mother of the West and the Jade Emperor went on an inspection tour, and everything changed.
At that time, she was in the Glazed Pavilion of the Jade Pool Palace, reading. She loved the Glazed Pavilion—everything in it was made of precious glazed gemstones, especially the grandmaster’s chair crafted from red, yellow, and green glazed gemstones. It was said that a great Buddha had given this chair to the Queen Mother of the West as a spiritual artifact, and meditating on it could greatly enhance one’s power. The Queen Mother had specially permitted her to read and cultivate on this chair.
She was sitting on the grandmaster’s chair, engrossed in her book, when she suddenly heard a noise. Looking up, she saw a stranger standing at the entrance of the Glazed Pavilion.
From his attire, she could tell that he held a significant position in the celestial realm. The man greeted her with a bow, and she hurriedly set down her book and returned the gesture.
“This esteemed celestial seemed unfamiliar. May I ask whom you are seeking at the Glazed Pavilion of the Jade Pool Palace?” she asked politely. “If you are looking for the Queen Mother, she is currently on an inspection tour with the Jade Emperor. Would you like to leave your name? When the Queen Mother returns, I will certainly convey your message.”
The man smiled slightly and cupped his hands in greeting. “I am Siming. I appreciate your help, celestial maiden.”
“Siming…” she murmured, feeling a surge of shock. She never expected to encounter the most popular and renowned deity among the female immortals in the Celestial Court today, in this hidden Glazed Pavilion.
“This humble servant greets Lord Siming,” she hurriedly bowed once more.
“Please, no need for such formalities,” Siming said, reaching out a pale, slender hand to help her up. She lifted her head and met his gaze.
It was said that Siming was refined and handsome, elegant in demeanor, and well-versed in the sacred texts. Seeing him in person, she realized the rumors were true—no, he was far more handsome than she had imagined, by a hundredfold.
She openly stared at him for a long time until he waved a hand in front of her, snapping her out of her daze.
“I apologize for intruding upon your cultivation space,” Siming said. “I was so focused on seeking counsel from the Queen Mother about mortal affairs that I forgot she was out with the Jade Emperor today. Please accept this box of celestial fruits as an apology—I hope it aids in your cultivation.”
As soon as he finished speaking, a beautifully decorated box appeared in his hands.
She numbly accepted the box, staring down at the beautifully decorated container.
“Thank you…” she murmured.
“Then I shall not disturb you further. Farewell.” Siming bowed and then turned to leave, leaving her standing there, staring blankly as she watched him depart.
After that, she frequently encountered Siming at the Jade Pool Palace. As their interactions increased, her feelings for him began to grow.
Sometimes, she couldn’t help but indulge in wishful thinking—perhaps Siming visited the Queen Mother so often just to see her? However, he always remained proper and followed the celestial rules, never overstepping any boundaries. Whenever he came to see her, it was always for legitimate reasons.
However, there were occasional exceptions. Siming would specially give her celestial fruits and artifacts that aided in her cultivation. She had secretly investigated and found that none of the other young fairies received such gifts; she was the only one!
If she wanted to be openly by Siming’s side, she knew she had to become a celestial immortal as soon as possible. She worked even harder on her cultivation, and finally, after much effort, she gained the Jade Emperor’s recognition and was granted the position of Moon Matchmaker.
This job would require frequent collaboration with Siming!
When she received the crystal token made of red gemstones from the Jade Emperor, she was overjoyed—now, she wouldn’t have to find excuses to visit Siming’s Palace anymore!
“Moon Matchmaker, I expect great things from you. Maintain an upright attitude and carry out your duties properly. Do not make mistakes,” the Jade Emperor said solemnly.
Snapping out of her excitement, she quickly bowed in response.
After assuming her new role, she moved into the Moon Matchmaker’s Pavilion, which was even grander and more beautiful than her previous residence. The palace was constructed of white jade, and at night, under the moonlight, it emitted a soft and ethereal glow. Cultivating in this serene environment allowed her to purify her mind and body and gain clarity and insight.
She was fortunate to receive the support of several high-ranking deities, including the Seven-Star Goddess, who had extensive experience working with past Moon Matchmakers.
“All previous Moon Matchmakers were male celestial lords. It’s rare to have a female moon deity,” Seven-Star Goddess remarked upon visiting her on her first Qixi Festival after taking office. Producing several thick registries from thin air, she added, “I’ve brought you records of mortals under sixteen years old. Don’t worry—I’ve already categorized them by birthplace, family background, lifespan, and most importantly, virtue.”
“Thank you, Seven-Star Goddess,” she said gratefully.
“No need for formalities. If you have any questions, just ask me—I’ve worked with Moon Matchmakers for tens of thousands of years,” Seven-Star Goddess said warmly.
Thanks to the pre-sorted registries, she only needed to cast a spell to match the names and record them in the Book of Fate, which took just one night. The real time-consuming task was the blessing ritual—creating clay figurines of the destined lovers, binding them with red threads, and offering prayers for their unions.
After several days of crafting clay figurines, she stood in the palace courtyard, holding a bundle of red threads, earnestly praying. That was when Siming visited her again.
She hastily interrupted her prayer, saying, “Greetings, Lord Siming.”
Siming smiled apologetically. “It seems I have terrible timing—this is the second time I’ve interrupted you. My deepest apologies.”
“Please don’t say that,” she replied, her joy barely contained. “I will still need a lot of guidance and care from you in the future, Lord Siming. Please, don’t worry about it.”
Bathed in the soft moonlight, Siming’s gaze was filled with warmth, making her heart race.
“Of course. If you ever need assistance, do not hesitate to ask me,” he said. He then extended his hands, and with a wave, a large bundle of red silk ribbons appeared out of thin air. “These are for you.”
She blinked in confusion as she accepted them.
“Use these instead of the regular red threads. These were once offered to the Jade Emperor by the first Moon Matchmaker. They not only create destined love but also reconcile enemies. Moreover, if female celestials wear them as clothing, they will radiate divine beauty.”
She was so happy she almost cried. She knew how precious these ribbons were to the Moon Matchmaker. Not only could they create beautiful marriages, but they could also resolve enmities and grievances.
Not long after, the Queen Mother of the West announced that a banquet would be held in the Jade Pool Palace to celebrate her promotion and elevation to celestial rank. For the first time, she did not need to take charge of organizing the banquet. The Queen Mother instructed her to simply wait and receive the blessings of the celestial beings on the day of the banquet.
Yet, during the celebration, she noticed Siming smiling at another celestial maiden. For the first time, her heart ached.
Unknowingly, she drowned her sorrows in five bottles of celestial wine.
“Moon Matchmaker, you are drunk,” a celestial servant cautioned.
She grinned foolishly.
“Tonight, I want to drink to my heart’s content!”
