- Chapter 14 - The Matchmaker's Hand
“The number of Miss Yu and Miss Ding who have signed up for matchmaking has exceeded two thousand,” Liao Yunqi said seriously as she stared at Qian Hongxian through the computer screen.
“Manager Qian, when are you planning to return to Taipei and start arranging blind dates for these two thousand lost single women? The general manager is asking about it, too. She thinks you’ve written over two thousand checks, but none have been cashed yet. She’s worried that the reputation of ‘Moonlight Matchmaking Agency’ might not hold up.”
Every day, she had to handle these matters, promoting Qian Hongxian externally while appeasing the general manager internally. Weeks had passed but Qian Hongxian still hadn’t given any further instructions.
“Don’t be so fierce, beautiful Yunqi. I just sent you the destined matches for the first batch of five hundred applicants.” Qian Hongxian pouted playfully on the screen. “It even includes when they’ll meet their soulmate and the person’s full name. As long as they keep an eye out for that name at the right age, they’ll be set.”
Liao Yunqi opened the Excel file that Qian Hongxian had sent. Inside, five hundred names of Miss Yu and Miss Ding were listed, with the names of their destined partners beside them.
“Yu Xinhui, 26 years old. She’ll meet her soulmate at 27—Liu Kaijun, from Taichung,” Liao Yunqi read aloud while resting her chin on her hand. “You’re so thoughtful. You even provided their hometown. Why not include their home addresses while you’re at it?”
“I don’t know their addresses. My abilities aren’t strong enough to see that,” Qian Hongxian replied sheepishly, lowering her head on the screen.
“Not strong enough to see?” Liao Yunqi furrowed her perfectly groomed brows.
Qian Hongxian waved her hand dismissively. “Never mind that. Just pass this information on to the members.”
“What about the remaining fifteen hundred?”
“Let me rest a bit, I got exhausted from seeing all that… But don’t worry, I promise I’ll send you the rest soon,” Qian Hongxian said, pressing her palms together in a pleading gesture.
Liao Yunqi stared at her for a long time.
She still couldn’t figure out how Qian Hongxian did it—how she managed to match single people with their destined partners so accurately without using any tricks like deliberately setting them up with bad matches first. She hit the mark in one go.
Liao Yunqi had asked her about it before, but Qian Hongxian had only given her a cryptic look, as if hesitant to speak.
“I’ve explained it to so many people, but no one believes me. Just think of it as good luck,” Qian Hongxian had said.
“I believe you. Now spill,” Liao Yunqi pressed. If possible, she wanted to be a matchmaking manager too.
“Before I was reincarnated, I worked as the Moon Matchmaker in the Celestial Court. I can see everyone’s destined partner.”
Liao Yunqi stared at Qian Hongxian, who was hugging a stuffed Snoopy toy, speechless.
“What a half-hearted explanation.”
Qian Hongxian let out a bitter laugh, buried her face in Snoopy’s belly, and said no more.
As Liao Yunqi was lost in thought, Qian Hongxian suddenly asked from the screen, “Yunqi, didn’t you want me to be your wedding dress model?”
“Yeah, but do you even have time? Aren’t you busy cozying up to that Yun Jinyao?” Liao Yunqi teased as she organized her files.
“Hey, don’t talk nonsense!” Qian Hongxian blushed and protested angrily.
“Besides, our photographer has some family matters to take care of and won’t be able to do the shoot for a while.”
Qian Hongxian flashed a mysterious, mischievous smile.
“Listen, I know an amazing photographer. Why don’t you come to Guanxi for your wedding shoot?”
A few days later, with a vacation mindset, Liao Yunqi took leave from work. She packed her bags and struggled with her heavy luggage as she boarded the high-speed rail to Hsinchu.
She arrived at Hsinchu Station around noon. Her phone pinged with a Line message from Qian Hongxian, directing her to Exit 4 to look for a white Lexus.
“This woman has no conscience, not even coming to help with my luggage,” Liao Yunqi muttered to herself as she stared at her phone.
Just as she was about to text Qian Hongxian for help, she sensed someone approaching.
“Excuse me, are you Miss Liao Yunqi?”
She looked up.
A tall, muscular man with long hair tied high, a beard, and silver earrings stood beside her, looking at her politely.
“Do I know you?” Liao Yunqi raised an eyebrow.
The man smiled slightly. “No, but I know your friend Qian Hongxian. She specifically asked me to pick you up.”
“But how did you know I was Liao Yunqi?”
“Hongxian said you were coming to Guanxi for a wedding shoot. I figured you’d have a lot of luggage, so I came inside to find you. I only asked her for your photo after I arrived, just to be sure.”
After saying that, the man bent down and, with just one hand, effortlessly lifted her three heavy wedding dress bags. With his free hand, he extended a handshake to her. “By the way, I’m Yun Jinyi.”
Liao Yunqi smiled and shook his hand. “Nice to meet you.”
After the handshake, Yun Jinyi grabbed the handle of her last suitcase and gestured for her to follow.
Are there really men this considerate on Earth? Liao Yunqi thought in surprise.
She had four boyfriends before, and every single one of them had revealed their true colors after they started dating, either rude or indifferent. After breaking up with the last one, she had silently sworn never to fall in love again.
Yun Jinyi stopped in front of a brand-new white Lexus RX 450h+, opened the trunk, and loaded her luggage. Liao Yunqi helped adjust the luggage before gracefully settling into the front passenger seat.
She curiously looked around the car’s interior, while Yun Jinyi busied himself searching for something. “Where did Jinyao leave his sunglasses? Don’t tell me he left them in his other car?”
“You’re Yun Jinyao’s…?” Liao Yunqi asked curiously.
“Oh, you know Jinyao too? I’m his older brother. I guess Hongxian must have mentioned him to you?” Yun Jinyi gave up on finding the sunglasses and started the car.
“You and Hongxian seem pretty close?” Liao Yunqi asked.
“Why do you ask?”
“I heard Yun Jinyao called her ‘Miss Qian’ for a long time.”
“Hongxian is friendly and easygoing. We started calling each other by name the second day we met. I’m not as uptight as Jinyao,” Yun Jinyi chuckled. “Hongxian said you’re her coworker? So you’re a matchmaker too?”
“Yeah, but I’m not as skilled as Hongxian. Her matchmaking success rate is one hundred percent.”
“I actually checked out your website online. The wedding dresses you designed are my favorite among all the ones I’ve seen. You’re probably the only matchmaking consultant in the world who can design such stunning wedding dresses, so please don’t underestimate yourself.”
Liao Yunqi smiled slightly. “Thank you.”
“Besides, are you sure Hongxian’s matchmaking success rate is really 100%? I heard she wants to arrange a blind date for Jinyao. If that’s the case, her flawless record might be about to break.”
“Why?” Liao Yunqi asked curiously.
Yun Jinyi grinned.
“Because I think Jinyao likes Hongxian.”
“What a coincidence, I think so too. Why don’t we work together to set them up?”
Yun Jinyi turned his head to look at her, extending his right hand. Liao Yunqi matched the gesture and high-fived him.
“Pleasure working with you,” Yun Jinyi said with a bright smile.
After more than twenty minutes, the car entered Guanxi Township. Yun Jinyi drove her straight toward Mountain Stream and Green Fields, navigating winding mountain roads that almost made Liao Yunqi carsick.
As they stepped through a traditional Chinese-style entrance together, they saw Qian Hongxian wearing an apron while mopping the floor. The moment Hongxian spotted Liao Yunqi, she excitedly threw down the mop and sprinted toward her.
“Yunqi! I missed you so much!” Qian Hongxian hugged her tightly.
“Okay, okay, I get it, you missed me. But my spine is about to snap!” Liao Yunqi pushed her away, took a good look at her, then shook her head. “My god, you’re unreasonably thin. And that apron? You blend into this restaurant so perfectly, no one would guess you’re a matchmaking manager.”
At some point, Yun Jinyi had stepped into the kitchen. Now he returned with a bottle of Coke in his hand, offering it along with a straw to Liao Yunqi. “Drink some, it’ll help with the carsickness.”
Liao Yunqi accepted it, a bit surprised. Was her discomfort that obvious?
“You’re feeling carsick? Sit down quickly.” Qian Hongxian pulled her over to a table.
“Are Liqing and Shaoxuan out? Jinyao isn’t here either?” Yun Jinyi asked Qian Hongxian.
“Lisa is still at school, Shaoxuan went out for groceries, and Jinyao left early this morning to ride his motorcycle in the mountains. He’s not back yet.” Then Qian Hongxian changed the subject. “Yunqi, you’ve met Jinyi now, right? If you have any ideas, just tell him. He’s an internationally renowned photographer.”
Liao Yunqi elegantly put down her Coke and finally gave Yun Jinyi a serious look.
“You’re the photographer?”
Yun Jinyi smiled. “I have a lot of experience shooting wedding photos. Tell me how you’d like it done.”
“Then I’ll be counting on you.” Liao Yunqi returned a sincere smile.
Qian Hongxian grinned happily.
“Have you two exchanged Line contacts yet? If not, hurry up and do it, so you can reach each other immediately if inspiration strikes in the middle of the night.”
“Sure.” Yun Jinyi readily took out his phone.
Nice try, Qian Hongxian. I see exactly what you’re up to. Your intentions are written all over your face. Keeping her sweet smile, Liao Yunqi opened her Line app while secretly glaring at Hongxian.
Just as they finished scanning each other’s QR codes, a man dressed in full motorcycle gear walked into the restaurant, carrying a bag of what looked like Hakka rice dumplings. That must be Yun Jinyao.
Liao Yunqi observed him with curiosity. His facial features were strikingly handsome, almost too perfect to believe they were natural. The same facial structure on Yun Jinyi didn’t have quite the same effect.
A guy this good-looking and wealthy must have women lining up to marry him, just like the number of members in Qian Hongxian’s matchmaking service. Hard to believe he’d be superstitious enough to insist on only marrying someone with the surname Yu or Ding.
“You’re here? This is my colleague, Liao Yunqi,” Qian Hongxian introduced.
Unlike his brother, Yun Jinyao only gave Liao Yunqi a polite nod before handing the bag to Hongxian. “Your mom bought these for you.”
Liao Yunqi watched with amusement as Qian Hongxian happily accepted the dumplings.
“You went to see Hongxian’s mom again?” Yun Jinyi asked.
“It was on the way,” Yun Jinyao said while taking off his jacket. “You didn’t wreck my car, did you?”
Yun Jinyi rolled his eyes. “My driving is excellent. If you were so worried about it, why didn’t you just lend me the Toyota instead?”
“Lisa took it for servicing yesterday,” Qian Hongxian answered on his behalf. She kept sniffing the dumplings, looking like she was about to drool.
“Yun Jinyao,” Liao Yunqi suddenly spoke up, “I’d like you to be Hongxian’s groom.”
