Chapter 49: Intern Xiao Zhao

When men get together, there’s one topic they can never seem to avoid: the pale, fl*shy bodies of women. Some even elevate ‘having watched p*rn together’ to a measure of friendship. Zhao Xunyu’s dorm mates had all become completely comfortable with each other. Now that they all had girlfriends, they began sharing ‘good films’ — some grotesque and bizarre, others just intensely stimulating — in their group chat.

At first, Zhao Xunyu would click on them. But it was the videos clearly filmed with a hidden camera that made him feel disgusted and repulsed, more than the hardcore, grotesque ones. Eventually, just seeing the titles of the shared links made him frown. He found them deeply degrading.

Of course, he would never let Chu Zhi Lu see such videos, nor would he ever discuss them with her.

He gradually began to have s*x with her less and less when they were away from home. Despite the passion that flared and the desire that overwhelmed them, he would lower the air conditioning and pull the blanket completely over their heads, exploring and caressing in the darkness. In such a setting, their senses seemed to sharpen and their breath grew more searing. It was like being on a small, cramped, humid, and dark boat on a deep black sea. Only by clinging to each other with all their might could they find the courage to hold on.

Zhao Xunyu had become incredibly possessive, even swallowing Chu Zhi Lu’s soft moans to prevent them from escaping into the air.

Not being able to go outside may have limited some activities, but he decorated their home to make it more interesting. He acquired several sets of role-playing costumes and props. Chu Zhi Lu, still wearing a cold expression, played the part of a demure kitchen maid forced by a ruthless gang boss.

Zhao Xunyu’s idyllic college life ended during the summer after his sophomore year. During his first two years, his studies had been demanding, and his father had been busy with his business. But as his second year concluded and he was planning a trip with his girlfriend, Zhao Qingtang insisted he intern at the company.

Of course, Zhao Qingtang dangled a carrot, promising to buy Zhao Xunyu the sports car he had been eyeing once the internship was over. Zhao Xunyu initially refused, wanting to spend time with Chu Zhi Lu. However, he soon realized that she was even busier during the break than during the semester, which left him feeling useless. When Zhao Qingtang called again, exasperated by his son’s lack of ambition, Zhao Xunyu finally relented.

Now, he and Chu Zhi Lu both had their driver’s licenses. All they needed was a car, and their little family would be complete.

The night before leaving City A, Zhao Xunyu clung to Chu Zhi Lu, reluctant to part. After messing around until midnight, Chu Zhi Lu was so sleepy she couldn’t be bothered to lift a finger. He, on the other hand, was still full of energy and in the mood to be clingy. Burying his head in her ch*st, he used the bridge of his nose to gently nudge her br*asts, kissing her repeatedly. Sometimes he made little suckling sounds like a nursing baby, and at other times, he shook his head slightly to rub against her randomly, all the while making a low purring noise.

Just like a puppy.

Her ch*st was damp from his kisses. When he finally settled down, pressing his cheek against her stomach, she reached over to the nightstand, pulled out a couple of w*t wipes, and began to clean her ch*st. Noticing her movement, Zhao Xunyu lifted his head, looking a bit displeased. “Are you disgusted with me?”

Without looking at him, she pulled out a dry tissue and continued wiping. “Isn’t it obvious?”

She didn’t smile, and she really looked disgusted.

“So cold and heartless after you’ve had your fill,” he muttered. His face was pathetically pressed right back against her stomach. She glanced down at his completely dependent posture, and her heart softened. She reached out and stroked his hair.

Zhao Qingtang didn’t let Zhao Xunyu intern at the company so he could lord it over everyone. Zhao Xunyu knew that.  However, he didn’t expect his father to banish him to the newly established branch’s business department as a lowly intern.

Zhao Qingtang had planned to rotate him through various production departments to gain practical experience. This would ensure that, as a future leader, he wouldn’t be clueless about the day-to-day operations of each unit. This was also meant to familiarize him with the business and build rapport with the employees.

After a few days on the job, Zhao Xunyu sprawled on the sofa like the actor Ge You on the couch, completely oblivious to how he looked on camera. With his eyelids half-open, he started ranting to Chu Zhi Lu, “Interns are the lowest rung on the corporate ladder, glorified as ‘immersive learning’ and ‘bridging theory with practice.’ But when you actually start working, you realize you’re just doing menial tasks. You’re responsible for serving tea during departmental meetings and politely closing the door behind everyone. The idea of making a splash and impressing everyone is complete b*llsh*t.”

At least he had the advantage of being a troublemaker. When senior colleagues asked him to clean their desks, pick up their kids, or perform other ridiculous tasks, he flatly refused. Their tone wasn’t a request; they acted as if these were the intern’s rightful duties. Wen Jiang, another male intern from a different school, wasn’t as assertive. He accepted every assignment with nervous diligence, working tirelessly all day.

Despite handling trivial tasks, Wen Jiang seemed indispensable. The constant calls of ‘Xiao Wen’ made it sound as if the entire department would collapse without him.

Zhao Xunyu would lend Wen Jiang a hand when he was overwhelmed and advise him, “Don’t be such a pushover. Don’t take on every task. They won’t think you’re a good person. They’ll just make you fetch kids and water all day. Before the interns arrived, Sister Song Ya never bothered with these things.”

Zhao Xunyu only lost his temper against those who took advantage of him and tried to enslave him. Otherwise, he remained polite and courteous. Song Ya handled administrative work and interacted with him frequently. The two enjoyed chatting and got along very well.

Wen Jiang smiled wryly. “What else can I do? I’m studying marketing, and this major is so vague. At least by helping with these tasks, the seniors might consider bringing me along when they meet with clients or research the market. Otherwise, how am I supposed to write my internship report?”

He sighed, trying to find humor in his situation. “Actually, I’ve got it pretty good. Some of my classmates landed internships in real estate, banking, or door-to-door sales—now that’s what you call living hell.”

Zhao Xunyu fell silent. Even as a finance major, he didn’t feel like a technical prodigy. The finance world seemed just as speculative as the stock market. They say you need capital to break into finance. In reality, though, finance dogs who invest ten thousand yuan in the stock market feel like they’re navigating its treacherous currents. They obsessively track the rise and fall of companies every day.

Interns primarily handled auxiliary tasks that were low-value, tedious, and time-consuming. They were also stuck with miscellaneous errands, such as picking up kids, which Zhao Xunyu shied away from. Senior colleagues often assigned him and Wen Jiang to manage difficult clients. Sometimes, after patiently following up for four or five days, the client would suddenly claim they hadn’t considered all the details. They would say they needed more time to think it over.

This drove Zhao Xunyu’s head to throb with frustration.

When his supervisor and senior colleagues went out for business dinners, he acted as their driver. Not only would he be called back to the office mid-dinner to retrieve documents, but clients would also pull him aside to criticize his hairstyle, saying it was too flashy and unprofessional. They warned him to change it immediately if he wanted to be taken seriously and stay with the company.

By the time he got home, showered, and crawled into bed that night, it was past midnight. He was video-chatting with Chu Zhi Lu. One moment he was saying, “Baby, let me kiss you to recharge,” and the next, he was sound asleep.

Chu Zhi Lu blew him a kiss through the screen, left the video call running, and continued working on her laptop.

They hadn’t seen each other in nearly half a month—the longest they’d been apart since they got together. Zhao Xunyu’s department had joined the new company as pioneers. Working overtime and attending business dinners until 10 p.m. was routine, and weekends off were a distant fantasy. Chu Zhi Lu, who was working on software development with her senior sister, was also constantly putting in extra hours.

On his twentieth day of the internship, Xiao Zhao received his first paycheck with the note ‘Internship Salary.’

After working like a beast of burden for a month, he saw his salary: four thousand yuan! It was enough to make anyone weep with sorrow.

After briefly lamenting, Zhao Xunyu transferred the money to his girlfriend: My first paycheck ever—four thousand yuan! A fortune!

He sent another message: Who’s crying?

Chu Zhi Lu replied quickly: Good boy.

Then she transferred 40,000 yuan to him, with the note: Don’t cry

How could Zhao Xunyu possibly cry now? His cheekbones nearly soared into the heavens. He immediately accepted the money: No crying! I’ll work like a horse for Chu Zhizhi for free for the rest of my life!

“Mm-hmm.“

Zhao Xunyu hadn’t posted on WeChat in a month. He was hiding his identity during the internship, and his previous WeChat posts had featured traces of his father. He set his visibility to three days only, claiming that he preferred to keep a low profile and avoid attention.

Finally, the young master resurfaced on WeChat during a brief lunch break.

He posted a screenshot of the money he’d received with the caption: Four hundred thousand a month? I’d rather die than accept! Forty thousand for life? I’ll follow you to the ends of the earth!

After posting it, he immediately sent his father a private message: Don’t like this post! Don’t expose me!

Zhao Qingtang was too busy to pay him any attention.

Xu Qingchen: Still reeking of that familiar stench.

Song Xiuzhu: Holy sh*t! I’m so jealous, bro!

Wen Jiang: Envious…

Song Ya: Xiao Zhao is really good!

Zhao Xunyu’s good mood persisted throughout the day. Even when he was interrupted while writing his data analysis report in the afternoon to pick up takeout, he responded with a cheerful smile and asked, “Whose order is it?”

Song Ya replied, “Yours.”

“Mine?”

He checked his phone and saw a WeChat message from Chu Zhi Lu: Ordered afternoon tea for you and your seniors.

Zhao Xunyu retrieved four large bags of takeout from an upscale shop known for its variety of desserts, drinks, and snacks. He unpacked the items and distributed them among his colleagues. When the senior staff learned that it was a treat from his girlfriend and recalled her extravagant social media posts, they showered Chu Zhi Lu with compliments.

Since his first day as an intern, Zhao Xunyu had abandoned his designer clothes. He now wore comfortable, understated brands with subtle logos. While his attire didn’t suggest that he came from a poor family, it was clear that he couldn’t match the wealth of his girlfriend, who had casually transferred 40,000 yuan to him.

The senior staff exchanged knowing glances, agreeing that Xiao Zhao’s good looks weren’t going to waste, as she was rich and willing to spend on him. His newfound confidence was understandable. After all, his girlfriend’s generosity likely exceeded his entire internship salary for the month.

Hearing them praise his girlfriend made Zhao Xunyu’s heart race with warmth.

He took a photo of his share and sent it to Chu Zhi Lu. Then, he happily began eating while texting her: Rich sister, hugs! (。>∀<)
