Chapter 47: Supervisor
Having his girlfriend ‘hold the fort’ had an immediate effect. Although Tang Xiyue came to see him the next day, her attitude was worlds apart from before.
The desperate attempt to pique his interest was gone. Now, she looked down her nose at him, her nostrils flaring with disdain. “I advise you to come to your senses and break up with Chu Zhi Lu. Otherwise, don’t blame me when I expose you. Chu Zhi Lu may be easily fooled, but I’m not. The Tang family is not someone you can trifle with. Stop clinging to these unrealistic fantasies.”
“…” Did Chu Zhizhi consciously portray him as a scumbag who cheated people’s feelings in order to persuade her to quit?
Never mind. Whatever his girlfriend did was right. Even if she wanted to portray him as a modern-day Pan Jinlian, he’d gladly play the part.
Zhao Xunyu nodded dismissively and replied, “Understood. Go back and focus on your studies.”
Seeing his indifference, Tang Xiyue gritted her teeth. “Don’t let me catch you slipping!”
That evening, as the couple snuggled on the sofa, Chu Zhi Lu brought up her conversation with Tang Xiyue. There was no need for Chu Zhi Lu to deliberately tarnish Zhao Xunyu’s image. In Tang Xiyue’s eyes, he was already a smooth-talking, two-faced scumbag who preyed on innocent young women.
When asked for her reasons, Tang Xiyue offered two. First, he just didn’t look trustworthy, and his flashy clothes and attention-seeking behavior made it clear that he craved attention wherever he went. Second, his smooth-talking, empty sweet talk had blinded Chu Zhi Lu to his true nature. She was getting close to the wrong people and pushing away those who deserved her affection.
Chu Zhi Lu’s retelling was calm enough, but while Tang Xiyue was speaking to her, Tang Xiyue saw Chu Zhi Lu as Tang Monk being deceived by the White Bone Demon. Meanwhile, Tang Xiyue saw herself as the Great Sage Sun Wukong, full of the frustration of ‘hating iron for not becoming steel,’ and she was unbelievably irritated by Chu Zhi Lu’s affection for Zhao Xunyu.
Zhao Xunyu listened with a mask of disbelief on his face and asked, “So subjective? She’s even bringing up physiognomy now.”
‘So, it’s my fault for being handsome? And is it my fault for winning Zhizhi’s affection?
So, when she reluctantly said she’d pursue me, it was all just to test me for Zhizhi, to expose my true nature?’
Regardless of whether her claims were true, as long as she stopped bothering him, he didn’t care.
As it turned out, Tang Xiyue wasn’t just making excuses. She genuinely believed that Zhao Xunyu was a bad person and that Chu Zhi Lu was a cabbage slaughtered by others who misplaced her affections.
The next time Zhao Xunyu went to pick up his girlfriend from school, Tang Xiyue’s icy glare pierced him. He squeezed his girlfriend’s neck and murmured, “I feel a bit wronged here.”
“Hmm?”
“You don’t even smile at me when we’re out, so why am I being envied? It’s just unwarranted misfortune.”
The unspoken meaning was crystal clear.
Glancing around to make sure no one was watching, Chu Zhi Lu stood on tiptoe and gave Zhao Xunyu a quick, butterfly-light kiss on the cheek.
Chu Zhi Lu had always disliked public displays of affection, but this was more than enough for Zhao Xunyu. “Comrade Xiao Chu is really getting the hang of things,” he teased.
The next second, the hand he had placed on Chu Zhi Lu’s neck was pulled away. “Be mindful of your behavior.”
Witnessing the entire scene from the car, Tang Xiyue let out a cold sneer.
She had already warned Chu Zhi Lu about Zhao Xunyu, so why was she still so intimate with him? Didn’t she find such low-level tactics slimy and insincere? With them, she was guarded as hell and always wore an ice queen face. But with Zhao Xunyu, was she really that stupid?
Meanwhile, Zhao Xunyu remained oblivious to Tang Xiyue’s inner turmoil, too busy enjoying his sweet, lovey-dovey days with his girlfriend.
One rare weekend when everyone in his dorm and their families were free, they decided to visit a highly rated farmhouse resort in the suburbs.
Zhao Xunyu packed all the luggage and even chose their outfits—matching couple’s outfits, of course. He muttered instructions as he stuffed things into the suitcase, leaving Chu Zhi Lu no room to contribute. She could only follow closely behind him, occasionally helping out.
“Chu Zhizhi, come here and try on these two outfits. Let’s see which one looks better.”
“Baby, come try this on. Let’s see which scent you prefer.”
Chu Zhi Lu was exceptionally obedient. After she lifted her arms and twirled in small steps to show off the little vest she was wearing, Zhao Xunyu gave her a few light taps on the bottom. “Why are you so well-behaved?”
She is so cute!
Chu Zhi Lu gazed at him with her clear, bright eyes. He tilted her chin up and gave her a deep, passionate kiss. When the kiss ended, he pinched her flushed cheeks and said, “Go sit on the sofa obediently. Don’t tempt me.”
Chu Zhi Lu wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him tightly. “No.”
She loved clinging to him and watching him bustle around the house. She was sensitive and wary of outsiders in her private space. Initially, she had managed everything at home herself. However, as Zhao Xunyu quickly mastered household tasks and strove for perfection, he immediately stopped her whenever he saw her lift a finger.
“My venerable elder, what are you doing? You’re making me feel terrible!”
“Use your words. Do you think you can just touch things around the house whenever you please?”
“Your Highness, is this humble servant not to your liking? Do you no longer wish for me to show my devotion?”
And so, these days, Chu Zhi Lu’s role was usually that of a supervisor. Occasionally, she would also work as a model or referee.
