Chapter 11

The central air conditioning in the office building was set very low. Xing Yu took a flannel blanket from the cabinet and draped it over his brother’s shoulders.

The two brothers sat facing each other in the reception lounge, chatting and drinking. The atmosphere was harmonious and pleasant. To outsiders, it would seem like a scene of brotherly affection and mutual respect.

Though both were sons of Xing Jingshan, aside from inheriting their father’s high-bridged nose, the two did not resemble each other much.

Xing Cheng’s biological mother was Xing Jingshan’s legal wife, a bona fide heiress from a wealthy family. His hereditary mental illness and the mole at the corner of his eye were both passed down from her.

Xing Yu was more fortunate than his older brother. His mother was Xing Jingshan’s second wife, not as noble by birth, but she had given Xing Yu a healthy body and a sound mind.

Though, judging by his penchant for tormenting his partners, that “sound mind” was debatable.

“Brother, why didn’t you stay one more night at Tingtian Residence? Why leave in such a hurry?”

Swirling the wine in his glass, Xing Yu’s smile didn’t fade. “That kid acted fast. I didn’t even have time to stop him before he ran to you to complain.”

“I’m a cripple. I can’t help him.”

Draining the red liquid in his glass, Xing Cheng raised the empty wine glass toward his brother. “Baiwen is yours now. Congratulations.”

Xing Yu let out a short laugh. “What’s there to congratulate me for? Brother, everything I’ve done, wasn’t it all for you?”

“My performance contract was terminated. My agent went to jail.” Xing Cheng raised an eyebrow. “Everything has gone exactly as you wished. Doesn’t that deserve at least one ‘congratulations’?”

His expression was calm and unbothered, without the slightest ripple, as if these events had happened to someone else, entirely unrelated to him.

Seeing his brother’s reaction, the smile in Xing Yu’s eyes dimmed slightly.

He picked up the empty glass from the table and poured half a glass of Lafite for his brother. “Baiwen is of no use in my hands now. Why not just push Rong Quwen out of the picture, and let the two of us brothers run it together? Mutual benefit. What do you think?”

“Brother, since you came looking for me today, I’ll speak plainly.” Xing Yu leaned forward and clinked glasses with Xing Cheng.

“Acquiring Baiwen wasn’t just my decision, it was a unanimous resolution by the board. First, to incubate new projects. Second, to promote a few newcomers I’ve got. I swear to God, I never had any intention of going after you.”

“So, going from actor to behind-the-scenes boss… you never thought about it?” Xing Yu asked again.

Xing Cheng put down his glass. “Not interested.”

“……”

Silenced by one sentence from his older brother, Xing Yu’s handsome features twisted slightly.

He had originally planned everything perfectly. Once Xing Cheng truly tore things apart with his former company, Rong Quwen would, in order to avoid being kicked out of Baiwen, surely try every means to create public pressure and reveal the truth about Xing Cheng’s condition.

By then, with both sides suffering losses, he would be able to find out exactly what Xing Cheng was hiding.

Besides, Rong Quwen’s son had chosen to side with Xing Cheng, secretly going head-to-head with him. It was long overdue to teach this family a lesson.

Gritting his teeth, Xing Yu still refused to give up and said, “Father’s intention is to have you gradually take over some of the family business and learn how to manage the company. You don’t have much experience yet—I can help—”

“Are you finished?”

Leaning back against the wheelchair, Xing Cheng couldn’t help but chuckle. “Ah Yu, go ahead and do whatever you want. Since when do you need my permission?”

Xing Shi appeared outside the office door and pointed at the watch on his wrist, signaling that it was time to return to the hospital.

Xing Cheng turned his wheelchair and spoke a parting line, “One last word of advice, don’t stretch your hand too far. Especially not into someone else’s home. That’s very impolite.”

That was a veiled warning to Xing Yu.

Xing Yu had planted someone in Tingtian Residence, which was how he found out so quickly when Tingtian Dashu came to discuss a plan with Xing Cheng.

Xing Shi entered the room, bowed to Second Young Master, then pushed his master’s wheelchair out of the office.

Not long after the Eldest Young Master left, Secretary Gao knocked nervously on the office door.

“Come in.”

The moment she stepped in, her high heels landed on a piece of shattered porcelain and she nearly slipped on the spot.

The floor was littered with shards of broken porcelain. Every time the eldest young master came and left, the boss would always smash whatever was closest to him to vent his anger.

She signaled a few staff members to come in and clean up. Then she shut the office door and handed the folder to the boss with both hands.

“President Xing, this is the information Old Liu and the team dug up from the hospital.”

Xing Yu leaned back in his office chair, his violently heaving chest betraying his current impatience.

Secretary Gao clasped her hands behind her back, tightening her grip on the folder.

The eldest young master was practically an explosive trigger for the boss, truly terrifying.

Thankfully, she had prepared two copies of the documents in advance. If the boss tore up the one on the table in a fit of rage, she could immediately replace it with a backup.

“Speak.”

Xing Yu closed his eyes, ignoring the documents before him.

“Yes.”

Secretary Gao swallowed hard and began reporting to her boss: “When Old Liu and the team first looked into it, they didn’t find a patient by that name in the inpatient department. Later, through internal sources, they discovered that the Eldest Young Master is staying in a VIP room in the Rehabilitation Medicine Department. The preliminary diagnosis is a Category II severe injury. He’s currently undergoing post-surgical rehabilitation.”

That was also something she couldn’t understand. The Xing family had their own private hospital, with more advanced medical equipment. Yet the Eldest Young Master didn’t stay there for treatment, and instead was hospitalized in a public hospital.

But it was precisely because the public hospital had stricter management that, despite multiple investigations, the boss’s people had failed to dig up any useful information.

Perhaps, this was exactly why Eldest Young Master Xing chose to stay in a public hospital.

“A car accident, hospitalized, who doesn’t know the things you just mentioned?”

A nameless fire surged in Xing Yu’s chest, and he slammed the table hard.
“Aside from meeting that kid from the Tingtian family once, he’s made no other moves?”

Seeing the boss’s anger value about to reach its peak, Secretary Gao quickly flipped open the folder in her hand and handed it to Xing Yu.
“There is, there is, Old Liu just found this out this morning through an informant inside the hospital.”

“Yesterday afternoon, the Eldest Young Master registered for an outpatient appointment with a doctor, but he left shortly afterward,” Secretary Gao said.
“This is the information of that doctor.”

Upon hearing her words, Xing Yu furrowed his brows and opened his eyes, snatching the folder off the desk.

He only skimmed through it casually before his back suddenly straightened.

What was handed to him was the detailed profile of the doctor who had treated Xing Cheng.

—

[Doctor’s Name: Lu Danggui]
[Age: 27]
[Department: Psychiatry]
[Specialties: Mania, Depression, Autonomic Nervous Dysfunction, Neurasthenia, etc.]

…

These were all publicly listed on the official website of S University’s Affiliated Hospital, easily searchable online.

Xing Yu skimmed the contents roughly, his gaze pausing on the photograph on the profile page.

In the photo, the young doctor wore a white lab coat, with delicate and refined features. His gentle eyes looked directly into the camera, and the smile on his face was vividly warm.

Seeing her boss’s expression change in an instant, Secretary Gao hurried to add:
“Yes, Old Liu also found this suspicious, why would the eldest young master register with a psychiatrist—”

“Shut up.”
Xing Yu shouted angrily.

Secretary Gao immediately fell silent.

“Lu. Dang. Gui.”
Xing Yu muttered the three words to himself in a deranged tone.

A familiar scene slowly surfaced in his mind.

White hospital walls, tightly shut operating room doors, the pungent smell of disinfectant.

Amidst the coming and going of people in the hallway, the person in the photo had reddened eyes, looking like a startled rabbit, and hurriedly ran toward him.

Then bowed deeply before him.

He still remembered what that person said that day.

He said,
“Sir, thank you. You are Wenfei’s savior.”

“He’s that girl’s older brother.”
Xing Yu murmured.

Secretary Gao was confused:
“President Xing, what girl—”

A faint glint of mania flashed across Xing Yu’s eyes, so subtle even he didn’t notice it himself.

“I know this doctor.”

He pointed to the profile on the desk and said to Secretary Gao:
“He has a younger sister.”

—

After lying at home for three days and nights straight, not only had his head fully recovered, at this point, even if someone tossed two sandbags at him, Lu Danggui could tie them to his legs and go straight out to run a marathon.

Taking advantage of a few free days, he even made a special trip to IKEA to buy a pile of things that Lu Wenfei could use in her dorm room.

When visitation time came, the counselor led him to Lu Wenfei’s dormitory. Before they even entered the door, Lu Danggui could already hear the girls’ laughter rising and falling from inside.

It turned out that there were no classes that afternoon, and a group of close friends had gathered in Lu Wenfei’s single dorm room to play Werewolf.

His little sister had always been a lively and cheerful person, but after the incident and a year of leave from school, she had become much more introverted than before.

He had been worried that after entering university, she might have trouble fitting in, but unexpectedly, her popularity was surprisingly good. As long as they had free time, her friends from the department would always come by to hang out.

Seeing his sister happy and enjoying her time at school, Lu Danggui finally felt at ease.

After finishing his three days of sick leave, Lu Dangui returned to his post and continued to shine in the psychiatry department.

After the morning meeting, he carried a thick stack of notes and materials he had organized over the past few days and intercepted Dean Qiu at the door of the conference room.

“Dean Qiu.”

Lu Dangui summoned his courage to speak.

“Ah, Xiao Lu!”

Dean Qiu had actually been planning to find him as well. Seeing this young man approaching energetically, he immediately smiled and greeted him:
“Are you alright now? How’s your recovery?”

Lu Danggui was a little overwhelmed by the attention and quickly nodded.
“Thank you for your concern, Dean. I’m fine now.”

“Um… Dean,” in front of the dean, he quickly took out the documents he had organized over the past few days,

“This is the record and results from Mr. Xing’s first consultation. After I went home, I reviewed everything again and drafted a few phased treatment plans. Could you take a look and see if they’re suitable?”

—

“……”

Looking at the earnest young doctor in front of him, Dean Qiu couldn’t help but sigh.

Such dedication among young people was truly rare, he really didn’t want to discourage Lu Danggui’s enthusiasm.

“Xiao Lu, here’s the thing.” Dean Qiu softened his tone.
“Mr. Xing is currently undergoing the discharge process and will not be staying at the hospital anymore.”

“Which means, you won’t be responsible for his follow-up treatment from now on.”

Lu Danggui stood frozen in place.

“But… but—”

The news came so suddenly that he couldn’t react right away.

“But there’s some good news I can tell you in advance.” As if remembering something, Dean Qiu continued,
“Mr. Xing transferred a very large sum of compensation into the hospital’s account, most of it was specifically designated for you. Because the amount is quite significant, the hospital leadership needs to hold a special meeting to discuss it, which is why we haven’t informed you yet.”

He had originally thought that, after experiencing such a violent attack from a patient, this young doctor definitely wouldn’t want to continue treating him. Never did he expect that Lu Danggui would react like this, as if he had completely tossed aside the fact that he was nearly strangled to death.

“Doctor Lu, I’ll be honest with you. The fact that Mr. Xing doesn’t want to continue treatment is actually a good thing for you.”

Dean Qiu hadn’t planned to be this blunt, but since he was rushing to another meeting, he had to keep it short:

“Many psychiatric experts in the country, even my own mentor, have treated Mr. Xing before, but his condition has never shown any obvious improvement. Mr. Xing’s identity is already a sensitive one. If you continue to take on his treatment and there’s no improvement, or even a worsening of his condition, you might end up facing even more trouble, do you understand?”

Seeing that Lu Danggui was frozen in place and didn’t utter a word for a long time, Dean Qiu thought the young man had been intimidated by his words.

Before turning to return to the meeting room, Dean Qiu even patted Lu Danggui on the shoulder and said comfortingly,
“Xiao Lu, don’t worry. Once the finance department finishes the review, that compensation sum will be fully transferred to your salary card.”

Just as he opened the meeting room door, he suddenly heard Lu Danggui speak from behind:

“Dean Qiu.”

“Dean Qiu,” Lu Danggui held his breath,
“didn’t you once say during a lecture that saving lives and treating illnesses is a doctor’s duty, and it shouldn’t be affected by any external factors?”

“After I went home, I thought about it for days. That aggressive behavior Mr. Xing exhibited in the bathroom that day, I believe it wasn’t caused by an episode.”

“Based on the description of Mr. Xing’s medical history, his emotional fluctuations have always been in a highly suppressed state. The delusional symptoms that surfaced that night were, at the beginning, just a stress response, his body’s way of breaking through his emotional expressive disorder. However, from the moment he attacked me, it was his internal instincts driving the behavior.”

“That night, I also sensed a significant emotional fluctuation in Mr. Xing. His emotions had clearly entered a state of arousal, which is one of the signs that alexithymia is improving.”

“So, Dean, Mr. Xing’s condition is not worsening.”

Lu Danggui stared intently at the senior doctor in front of him.

“His condition is showing signs of improvement!”

He knew the director could understand what he meant, and also knew the message he was trying to convey.

However, he didn’t receive the affirmation he was hoping for.

Dean Qiu merely patted him on the shoulder again, then shook his head and closed the meeting room door.

The result of all Lu Danggui’s painful contemplation over the past few days… he had actually already realized it that very day.

But so what if he had?

Eldest Young Master Xing himself didn’t want to cooperate with the treatment and insisted on being discharged, were they supposed to hold him against his will?

Staring at the tightly closed door in front of him, Lu Danggui slowly clenched his fingers into a fist.

These past few nights, he had been having the same strange dream, seeing his little sister’s legs being cruelly broken inch by inch, while Xing Cheng stood not far away, coldly watching like an indifferent bystander.

Xing Cheng was their family’s enemy, someone he hated deeply.
That was an undeniable fact.

But before that, he was still Lu Danggui’s patient.

In this world, no doctor would willingly give up on a patient who could still be saved.

After standing in front of the meeting room for a long time, Lu Danggui finally moved, walking to the window at the end of the hallway.

Picking up the medical record in his hand, he typed the phone number written on it into his phone.

He still couldn’t let it go.

He wanted to ask this man, whom he had hated for a full three years, why, when the illness could clearly be treated, he was choosing to give up halfway.

He pressed the call button. The phone began to ring with a steady beep.

Lu Danggui waited for a long time. No one answered on the other end.

Even just seeing a doctor required the doctor to sign a confidentiality agreement, and he went everywhere with a group of bodyguards, on top of that, he was a hugely popular celebrity.

The number written on the medical record was probably fake.

A minute passed.

Just as he was about to hang up—

Suddenly, the call was answered.

A calm male voice came from the other end:

“Hello?”
