When the villagers saw the announcement exposing the fake monk’s crimes, they refused to believe it. After all, they had witnessed the rain come down right after they sacrificed to the river god. If it weren’t true, why else would they have treated this “master” like a deity, practically worshipping him?

However, the villagers’ faith was only because it had rained a few days after the ritual, which reinforced their belief. But the people from the other villages were different. They had already realized they’d been tricked, but they didn’t know where the fake monk had disappeared to. Now that his whereabouts had been revealed, they swarmed into the village.

With the crowd growing larger, it was the perfect moment for Meng Changjin to execute her plan. She finally stepped out of her family’s courtyard for the first time since waking up. Her appearance shocked the villagers; many of them looked as if they had seen a ghost, with some even trembling in fear.

When the “master” saw the throngs of people, he was visibly flustered. Seeing Meng Changjin alive left him stunned, his calm demeanor cracking. Though he tried to maintain his composure, his eyes flickered with unease when Meng Changjin asked him to swear a vow to the heavens. He hesitated.

During this era, people held deep reverence for divine beings, and while the fake monk dared to exploit the idea of the river god to eliminate a perceived threat, he wasn’t willing to challenge the heavens with an oath. Meng Changjin, however, was unafraid. When the monk refused to swear, she took the liberty of swearing on his behalf: “Whoever lies shall be struck by lightning.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, lightning struck down upon the fake monk, crackling and searing his deceitful form. There was no more doubt among the crowd. The villagers, who had been complicit in offering up Meng Changjin to the river god, were now embarrassed and filled with shame. They avoided eye contact with Meng’s family and directed all their resentment at the fake monk.

Some villagers even tried to justify their actions by saying, “Well, at least she didn’t die!” Hearing this made Meng Changjin’s stomach churn. Without a word, she turned and led her family away from the village.

Meng Changjin decided to plant a unique tree in the abandoned courtyard before they left. This tree was a special spiritual fruit tree known for its ability to absorb all the water in its vicinity, causing a man-made drought. With this tree in place, the village would suffer a severe lack of water for three years, regardless of how much rain fell. She named it the “Artificial Drought Tree,” her own little parting gift to the villagers who had wronged her.

As for the fake monk, after the lightning strike, he didn’t fare much better. He was beaten to death by the enraged crowd. Meng Changjin couldn’t help but feel a tinge of pity—he didn’t even get to suffer as long as she’d planned.

After leaving the village, Meng Changjin bid farewell to her companion, Xiao Si. He asked her one last question: “If I told you that you could return to your rightful place with just a nod, would you?” Without a moment’s hesitation, Meng Changjin declined. She had found her path, and no longer needed to look back.

Xiao Si fell silent, and then said, “I understand.” Meng Changjin said with a hint of a smile, “Well then, until we meet again.” Xiao Si echoed the words before disappearing from her mind.

Meng Changjin whispered, “Until we meet again,” only to hear a familiar voice behind her say, “What, miss me already?” Turning around, she found Xiao Si had returned, transformed into a cheeky little boy. Surprised, Meng Changjin asked, “Why are you following me now?”

“Well, you didn’t want to return to your world, so I guess I’m stuck with you,” he said with a playful shrug. As they continued walking down the road together, Meng Changjin realized that while one story had ended, another was just beginning.

🌟 Kliraz’s Tidbit: The Karma of Kaijū Trees 🌳(≧▽≦)

What a satisfying moment for Meng Changjin, using a man-made drought tree to exact her revenge on the villagers who wronged her! This tree reminds us of the ancient concept of karma (因果报应), a cornerstone in both Buddhist and Daoist philosophies that states that actions have consequences, good or bad (Teiser, S. F. (1994). The Scripture on the Ten Kings and the Making of Purgatory in Medieval Chinese Buddhism. University of Hawaii Press). It’s like she’s giving those villagers a taste of their own medicine in a uniquely poetic way.

While today’s weather modification involves cloud seeding techniques to produce rain, Meng Changjin’s method takes the cake for creativity! In modern China, cloud seeding is used to manage droughts, especially in regions like the Tibetan Plateau (Zhong, M. (2019). Weather Modification in China. Cambridge University Press).

Back then, the reverence for oaths to the heavens was strong; people genuinely believed in divine retribution if they broke a vow. Today, while such beliefs have diminished in many parts of the world, the idea of swearing to the “truth” remains a fundamental part of legal systems worldwide. The power of oaths still holds weight, though it’s more about honesty than fear of a thunderbolt! (Kohn, L. (2009). Daoism and Chinese Culture. Three Pines Press).

Seeing Xiao Si transform from a voice in her head to a cheeky little kid was such a fun twist! It’s almost like those sidekick characters in Chinese myths who start as a talking animal or spirit and suddenly transform into a wise-cracking companion. Think of it as a cross between Journey to the West‘s mischievous Sun Wukong and a modern-day anime sidekick! ^_^
