After Jiang Ling taught Qin Siluan how to make dried flowers, she went to bed. The little one stayed in the living room, fully absorbed in her task. She carefully glued the blue roses into a photo frame, choosing the prettiest one to place inside a glass dome.

When the flowers were done, she placed them by Jiang Ling’s door, hoping she would see them the moment she woke up.

After cleaning the living room, Qin Siluan curled up with a blanket and fell asleep on the study floor as usual.

Wrapped in warm bedding and wearing freshly laundered sleepwear that smelled just like Jiang Ling’s, she snuggled happily into the covers.

But after a while, she realized that tomorrow was Sunday. By tomorrow night, she would probably have to leave.

…

Sure enough, even though Qin Siluan had done her best cooking and cleaning, Jiang Ling still brought up her going home in the afternoon.

Jiang Ling popped a piece of salt-soaked pineapple into her mouth while keeping her eyes fixed on the beautiful actress on the screen. She asked casually, “You’ve been out for two nights. Won’t your parents be worried if they can’t find you?”

The words made Qin Siluan’s face flush with embarrassment.

Because no matter how she heard it, it felt like a polite way of asking her to leave.

An ordinary person would have offered to go home the moment such words were spoken. But Qin Siluan did not want to go back. She even wanted to shamelessly stay.

Jiang Ling assumed her silence came from fear of being punished.

“If you’re scared to go back, I can take you. With me there, your parents probably won’t dare to hit you.”

Qin Siluan lowered her head further.

Jiang Ling continued, “Actually, if you had no parents or no home, I could let you stay with me. But you have a home, so you have to go back.” If she were like the female lead, abandoned by her mother and ignored by a wealthy father, Jiang Ling could have considered letting her stay.

But she was not. She was the supporting character. She had parents.

Letting a child with parents stay at your place just felt wrong.

This time, Qin Siluan answered quickly, “I don’t have parents…”

Jiang Ling was startled by the reply.

But then she remembered a part of the script that said the villain girl had a cold relationship with her family. She would not even admit her parents existed, and later left for the city after stealing the female lead’s achievements.

Even in the city, she struggled to deal with her bloodsucking parents and eventually took drastic action against them.

Thinking of that, Jiang Ling understood why the child might claim she had no parents.

“Still, you should go back. Otherwise, they might worry.”

Qin Siluan wanted to say, “They would never worry about me…” But the words were too hard to speak. If she insisted on staying, she would seem shameless, and Jiang Ling might hate her.

With her head nearly buried in her knees, she finally murmured, “Let me cook dinner first. Then I’ll go.”

Jiang Ling thought that was a good idea.

At least they would both get a meal. What if her heartless parents didn’t even give her dinner?

“Alright, then I’ll take you home after we eat.”

“Okay.”

That dinner was the slowest Qin Siluan had ever eaten. Every second felt like a struggle. She chewed each grain of rice again and again. Jiang Ling waited patiently. After they finished, she let Qin Siluan wash the dishes, then pack her things, including the gift box.

By the time they left, it was already dark.

Mid-September nights were getting cold.

Jiang Ling found herself a coat and brought one for Qin Siluan as well.

They walked side by side to the place Qin Siluan had described.

Along the way, Qin Siluan remained silent with her head lowered, looking like a lost dog. But to Jiang Ling, such pity meant little. When survival becomes difficult, little quarrels with parents seem insignificant.

Fighting with parents would never compare to going without food or shelter for two months.

Even so, Jiang Ling could consider letting her stay. But not yet. Their bond had not reached that level.

“What are your parents like?”

Jiang Ling asked out of boredom. Few stores stayed open in Jinlong Town at night. Only some barbecue stalls and roadside diners were open, and there was not much to see.

Qin Siluan thought a moment. “They are selfish people.”

One had her solely to use as leverage while the other completely abandoned responsibility, making both of them selfish.

“Do you hate them?”

Qin Siluan paused for a long time. Did she hate them? She was not sure.

When Wang Rong hit her, perhaps she did hate them. Hated that her mother had left and her father denied her, even hiring others to hurt her.

But in moments when she clutched the white dress her mother left behind, she still missed them.

She missed both her mother and father and sometimes even imagined them taking her home.

Jiang Ling took her silence as agreement.

And honestly, if she did not hate them, how could she have ended up killing them later?

“Where did you live before Jinlong?”

“Capital City.”

Jiang Ling raised an eyebrow. She had not expected the struggling villain to have come from a top-tier city. No wonder she wanted to go back so badly.

“Was there anything fun or delicious there?”

Qin Siluan shook her head. “I don’t know.” She added softly, “I had no money…”

She used to live in a slum with her mother, who spent her days chasing after her father. She would leave Qin Siluan alone at home. The girl had no money and was too small to go out.

Only after moving into her father’s large house did she see how luxurious the city could be, and how beautiful the food looked.

But she never got to taste it.

“Then if we get the chance someday, let’s go together.” Jiang Ling patted her head with a smile.

It was a careless promise, because according to the plot, the female lead would soon drive the supporting role out of the story by high school. Jiang Ling would not last long enough to meet her again in the capital, a truth Qin Siluan remained unaware of. She smiled sweetly and said, “Okay!”

Finally calming the child made Jiang Ling feel better too.

Though she had no strong feelings for this NPC, watching such a lovely child sulk every day was disheartening.

She had begun to care, even if only a little, beyond the mission.

…

Qin Siluan lived in the western part of Jinlong Town, a rundown area with few shops. There were plenty of unlicensed barbecue stalls, internet cafes, and cheap motels.

Unlike the quiet elsewhere, this street was buzzing with activity.

The passersby carried strong smells of alcohol and smoke.

Jiang Ling frowned the entire way.

From the moment they entered the area, Qin Siluan nervously gripped the hem of her coat. She kept checking Jiang Ling’s expression. When she saw the look of disgust on her face, her heart sank.

She had expected this. Of course Jiang Ling would be disappointed to find she lived in such a place.

“Sister, maybe you should head back. I know the way. I can go alone.”

Jiang Ling waved a hand, brushing away the pungent smoke and avoiding puddles that might dirty her shoes.

“I’ll take you to your door. I really can’t trust the surroundings here.”

Qin Siluan was both happy and worried.

If Jiang Ling already disliked the area, what would she think when she saw Wang Rong or the man she brought home?

Would she think Qin Siluan was filthy too?

“But… but…”

“No buts. Let’s go.”

Jiang Ling watched the area cautiously. A few drunk men were staring at them. She grabbed Qin Siluan’s sleeve and quickened her pace.

This place was too remote and chaotic. How did Qin Siluan manage to get to and from school safely?

Her parents were truly heartless. No wonder the girl hated them.

Jiang Ling cursed silently as they walked. After more than ten minutes, they arrived.

Standing outside the house, Jiang Ling understood why Qin Siluan never wanted to return.

The three-story building looked worn down. Neighbors had kept their homes clean, but Qin Siluan’s family’s place was filthy, with food scraps and trash scattered around, giving off a strong stench.

“You live here?”

Qin Siluan nodded anxiously, her eyes falling to the rotten fruit peels and cigarette butts on the ground. She felt hopeless. This was exactly what she did not want Jiang Ling to see.

She should not have let her desire linger and should have returned home right away. Now things were worse.

She twisted the hem of her shirt tightly.

“We live on the right side of the third floor,” she said in a voice so soft it barely escaped her lips.

Jiang Ling was stunned. She had known the villain’s home life was bad, but not this bad. She had assumed they lived in the entire building, old and messy as it was.

But they only lived on one floor?

“Go on up.”

Qin Siluan took a deep breath and shook her head in refusal.

She looked up with tear-filled eyes and pleaded, “Sister Jiang Ling, please just go. I can go up by myself.”

Please give me a little dignity.

Please.

Her tears fell without pause.

Jiang Ling, who had always been detached and indifferent, actually felt a twinge of sympathy.

Proud and independent, yet trapped in such a humiliating home. No wonder she later became obsessed with wealth and status, always competing with the female lead.

But then again, the female lead had a similarly poor background. So why did she not become vain?

Weren’t they from the same street?

Two people from the same place. Two completely different paths.

Jiang Ling chose not to shatter Qin Siluan’s pride. “Alright, then. Go ahead. I’ll leave now.”

Qin Siluan did not know that Jiang Ling had already labeled her as vain.

But she was not vain. She simply did not want Jiang Ling to see her shame.

She watched Jiang Ling leave, wiped her tears, and went upstairs.

Wang Rong had splurged on luxury goods in the capital. So when they came to Jinlong, she had no money for a better place and rented the cheapest one.

Poor security, dirty streets, and leaky buildings.

Wang Rong rarely brought keys. She was often gone. Once, when Qin Siluan forgot hers at school, she had no way to get in and no way to reach Wang Rong. After that, she kept a spare in the corner of the window.

She knocked, heard no response, and retrieved the key from the window to enter.

A foul odor greeted her. She covered her nose and turned on the light.

Compared to Jiang Ling’s clean home, this one was filthy. The floor was covered in cigarette butts and dust, empty bottles lay scattered around, and the kitchen sink overflowed with piles of unwashed dishes.

When the light came on, the couple on the couch jumped. The woman sat up quickly, buttoned her clothes, and cursed when she saw Qin Siluan.

“You little brat! You still know how to come home?”

Qin Siluan held her breath and went straight to the attic.

Wang Rong was drunk and weak. Seeing that Qin Siluan ignored her, she yelled, “Don’t you dare ignore me! Get us something to eat. We’re starving!”

Qin Siluan said nothing and ran upstairs.

But even her room was a mess. The bed was rumpled, the sheets creased. She felt nauseated.

The thought of Jiang Ling seeing this made her eyes burn with shame.

She ran downstairs in tears.

“Can you not bring people into my room like that? My father gives you money, yet you live like worms in this place! Why can’t we have a clean home? Why do you have to be so disgusting?”

Wang Rong was stunned for a moment, then rushed upstairs.

Qin Siluan backed into her room, locked the door, and wedged a long stick under the handle.

Wang Rong kicked and screamed, “You little brat! How dare you yell at me? If your father weren’t still giving me money, I wouldn’t even look at you!”

She pounded the door and cursed loudly.

Her voice echoed through the whole building.

Qin Siluan crouched behind the door with her arms wrapped tightly around her knees and her eyes bloodshot from holding back tears.

Jiang Ling had asked if she hated her parents. She was not sure.

But did she hate Wang Rong?

She wished she would die.

Her parents did not love her, but at least they did not torment her.

This woman, though, hurt her every day.

Without her, she could have lived well on her father’s support.

Jiang Ling had said so. Without this disgusting “home,” she could have stayed with her.

Then they could live together in a warm, clean, bright home.

Jiang Ling would teach her to make dried flowers, and she would cook for her.

They could go shopping, and she could use her father’s money to buy clothes for her.

That kind of life… would be so beautiful.

Qin Siluan hugged her legs tightly. Her eyes were red, as if bleeding.
