- Chapter 7 - You Don't Suit This Flower
Although Qin Siluan was in the kitchen cooking, her heart leapt into her throat the moment she saw Jiang Ling head to the living room. She was so distracted that she almost mistook sugar for salt while stir-frying.
She was terrified that Jiang Ling might miss the petal painting she had made. She kept glancing at her, watching anxiously as Jiang Ling sat on the sofa and, a moment later, noticed the little gift. When Jiang Ling picked up the photo frame and examined it carefully, a smile spread uncontrollably across Qin Siluan’s face. She held her breath, waiting for praise.
Sister, please say you like it. Please say it. Say it…
She cried out in her heart with all her might.
But to her disappointment, Jiang Ling simply looked at it for a while before putting the frame back on the coffee table and turning her full attention to the television.
Qin Siluan’s spirits sank. She no longer had the strength to grip the spatula. After slowly finishing the dishes and setting them on the table, she stood in silence, head bowed.
Anyone could tell she was upset.
Of course Jiang Ling noticed, but she did not know how to coax her.
She had no intention of indulging this habit.
The small wooden table was now covered with three freshly cooked dishes and a soup, which were stir-fried beef with green peppers, steamed egg, sweet and sour fish, and a bowl of green vegetable tofu soup. It was a balanced spread, vibrant and full of homely warmth. The aroma instantly stirred Jiang Ling’s appetite.
Just like before, Qin Siluan had only prepared a single set of tableware.
“You’re not hungry?”
Qin Siluan said nothing.
Jiang Ling sometimes found the girl’s silence a little frustrating.
“Bring the other set over. Sit down and eat with me.”
Qin Siluan pouted. She wanted to refuse but could not bear to give up the chance to eat with Jiang Ling.
She sat beside her with her head lowered and quietly poked at the rice in her bowl.
Her actions seemed to protest something.
“I saw the petals. They were very pretty. But if you leave them inside the frame, they’ll rot. Next time I’ll teach you how to make dried flowers.”
Qin Siluan’s head shot up, and her eyes sparkled instantly.
Her voice rang clear. “Okay!”
Her sudden burst of energy left Jiang Ling speechless. It reminded her of how, in the past, she had given a Nine-Turn Soul Revival Pill to save a villain, and they had sprung up like they had come back to life.
It was just a simple compliment. Was that really necessary?
If she had praised every treasure those suitors across worlds gave her, she would have been hoarse.
What an inexperienced child.
…
After dinner, Qin Siluan took the initiative to clear the dishes and stood on a stool to wash them carefully. She scrubbed each plate thoroughly, rinsed them clean, wiped them dry, and stacked them neatly.
Jiang Ling watched from the side, a little surprised. It was hard to imagine this quiet child turning out so devious in the future, someone who would hurt the female lead.
After rinsing her mouth, Jiang Ling went to her room to unpack. When she opened her suitcase and saw the stack of small merchandise from fan support events, she suddenly thought of the framed petals on the coffee table. She considered giving the child a small gift in return.
She reached into her collection and began rummaging.
Fan pillow? No, that one had her favorite idol’s best photo.
Matching tumbler? Definitely not. She had won that at a concert giveaway after much effort.
Signed photo cards? Absolutely not.
After digging for ages, she finally found a pink fan headband wrapped with loops of yarn and topped with a fabric petal. It looked like a blooming flower when worn. It was rather ugly, and she had only bought it because it featured a group photo of the idols in the petal’s center that could glow. Unfortunately, due to poor quality, the photo had fallen off shortly after she wore it.
She had kept the photo and now carried the headband out.
“Here. Consider it a return gift.”
Qin Siluan, who had been sitting upright at the desk reading, stared at the headband for a moment before her face lit up with pure joy. She received it with both hands, treating it as something precious.
“Thank you, Sister Jiang Ling!”
She cradled the headband in her hands and whispered, “It’s so cute. I really like it. This is the first gift I’ve ever received… I’ll make sure to keep it safe.”
She rummaged around looking for a small box. Jiang Ling handed her an unused shoebox. After getting permission, the child pasted it with colored paper to turn it into a gift box, then gently placed the headband inside.
Watching her, Jiang Ling felt a little uneasy.
She reached out. “Um… I thought about it. This headband doesn’t really look that nice. I’ll swap it for another one.”
Her suitcase still had plenty of hair accessories. She just had not wanted to give one to Qin Siluan earlier.
Qin Siluan quickly shook her head. “No way. I think it’s the nicest headband I’ve ever seen.” She added softly, “And you brought it back just for me. How could I dislike it?”
Jiang Ling: …
Why does it feel like you’re guilt-tripping me on purpose?
To break the awkwardness, Jiang Ling rubbed her nose. “Alright, then once you’re done putting it away, let’s go buy materials for dried flowers. I’ll teach you how.”
Qin Siluan immediately nodded. “Okay!”
They packed up quickly. Qin Siluan had no change of clothes and was still wearing yesterday’s dirty outfit. Jiang Ling thought for a moment and decided to take her out to buy a set. Given the plot, Qin Siluan would often stay with her anyway, so it made sense to prepare.
When they reached the town’s market, Qin Siluan seemed puzzled.
Jiang Ling explained, “I’m getting you a few things.”
She walked in and began picking items. Qin Siluan followed with a red face, watching as Jiang Ling chose a pair of pink slippers with soft white bunny ears, a pink nightgown, and a clean set of short-sleeved top and long pants.
Jiang Ling went to pay.
Qin Siluan stood beside her, watching timidly and asked, “Sister Jiang Ling, are you really buying these for me?”
Jiang Ling replied, “Who else would they be for?”
They were too small for her anyway.
After paying and walking out, she noticed that the child was not following. She turned and saw the little girl dragging her feet with her head lowered, resembling a pitiful puppy.
“What now?”
She was getting used to Qin Siluan’s sensitive ways. Though she was young, she thought far too much. Who knew what had triggered her this time?
Still, the girl stayed quiet.
Jiang Ling grew more curious and approached. That was when she saw tears falling silently, landing on the ground in perfect droplets.
Jiang Ling: …
“Why are you crying?”
Qin Siluan said nothing. Her emotions were visibly surging. Between sobs, she said, “Sister… why did you… buy me things? I don’t know what to do… You’re so kind… No one’s ever treated me like this…”
Her words were tangled and disjointed. Jiang Ling took a while to understand.
She stared at the girl, speechless.
You’re crying over this?
As a so-called vicious supporting character, you’re this easily moved?
If the female lead were kind to her in the future, would she just forget who she was?
That would not do.
Jiang Ling had no intention of turning her task into some sob-fest where the supposed villain broke down at every bit of kindness.
She crouched down, eye to eye with Qin Siluan. Their gazes met, and she spoke slowly, each word firm and clear.
“A girl should not be so easily moved by a little kindness. When someone treats you well, it’s okay to give something back. But you must never cry over just a small gesture. People like that get hurt easily. Remember this. You are a remarkable girl. You deserve kindness. Do you understand?”
Qin Siluan wiped her tears and nodded.
But how could she tell Sister Jiang Ling that this kindness was not small at all? It was something she had never experienced before.
People might not be moved by a little kindness, but they would never forget the first person who treated them well.
“Sister Jiang Ling, I’ll treat you well too!” She added, “I’ll repay you!”
Jiang Ling: …
That’s not really the point I was trying to make.
But… it was not entirely wrong either.
…
After buying clothes and slippers, they went on to purchase supplies for making dried flowers, including hot glue, glass jars, drying agents, and other materials. Once they had a full bag, they headed to a flower shop.
There were few flower shops in town. It was a remote place, a small city with limited wealth. Not many had the luxury to buy flowers. The shop owners who stayed open usually did so out of genuine love for flowers.
The store they entered was tidy and well kept.
The shop owner warmly introduced every type of flower.
Jiang Ling chose a bouquet of hyacinths and asked Qin Siluan what she wanted. After thinking a bit, the girl pointed to a bouquet of blue roses.
Jiang Ling: …
“That flower doesn’t suit you.”
Qin Siluan: ?
“But I think it’s beautiful.”
Jiang Ling sighed. If she liked it, then fine.
The shopkeeper smiled and wrapped both bouquets. When handing them to Qin Siluan, she gently pinched her delicate cheek.
“Your sister’s right. This flower does not suit you. But since you like it, take it. Just promise me never to become like this flower.”
Blue roses meant “something that can never be obtained” and “miracles that will never come true.” Their language of flowers spoke of secret love and letting go.
Loving someone you could never have, longing in silence, always waiting for a miracle, thinking of them every day while hoping they might remember you.
That kind of love was too painful.
Jiang Ling finished paying and said, “Don’t worry. She will never become like that flower.”
After all, she was supposed to be a ruthless and vicious supporting character who constantly schemed against the female lead and tried to steal the male lead.
How could this flower fit her?
Qin Siluan did not understand what they were saying, nor did she know the meaning of blue roses.
She just thought they looked beautiful because they were pure and dazzling.
Simply beautiful.
