- Chapter 6 - A Gift for Sister
Tears clung to Qin Siluan’s cheeks as she gathered the fallen petals and gently cupped them in her palms. Then she ran out.
It was mid-September, and the weather had already begun to cool. She wore only her school uniform and ran swiftly with the petals in her hands. Neighbors who saw her rushing away shook their heads and sighed.
“That child must have been beaten by her mother again. That woman is nothing short of a monster.”
Yet whenever someone tried to help little Siluan, they were quickly shouted down by the woman who called herself her mother.
“She’s my daughter. Mind your own business.”
Over time, the neighbors stopped trying to intervene. All they could do was look out for Qin Siluan whenever they saw her and slip her a few bites of food.
…
Qin Siluan ran as fast as she could, clutching the petals tightly. She did not understand. Other children had parents who loved them. Why didn’t she?
Her mother saw her only as a tool to threaten her biological father. Once she had taken the money, she had vanished. Her father saw her as a stain and did not want her either. The nanny hired to look after her abused her. Her classmates at school targeted her, treating her with malice.
She was still a child and could not make sense of it. She had always wanted to be kind, yet people always seemed to turn against her.
Right now, she only wanted to see Sister Jiang Ling.
In this whole world, only Jiang Ling treated her kindly without hesitation and believed in her without doubt.
She did not want to see anyone else but her.
She ran straight to the Jinjiang Community where Jiang Ling lived. But when she reached the stairwell, she stopped. Her palms were sweaty from gripping the petals, but they remained carefully protected.
Qin Siluan wanted to see Jiang Ling but was afraid she might disturb her. She climbed the stairs one step at a time, unsure how to explain her impulsive actions.
She had come without permission and had intruded.
It was impolite.
But she missed her too much.
In the end, she did not dare knock on Jiang Ling’s door. She simply sat at the stairwell outside her apartment.
She told herself that she would not bother Sister Jiang Ling. Just being closer to her would be enough to feel at ease.
Still, a small part of her hoped that when Jiang Ling opened the door, she would see her waiting outside…
So I have to protect these petals carefully. Even if I no longer have the most beautiful flowers, I will still give Sister Jiang Ling the prettiest petals.
…
Qin Siluan waited a long time. From morning until the sky turned dark, she sat silently. Suddenly, the door in front of her opened. She immediately looked up, a hopeful smile forming, only to see a woman in her forties or fifties walking out.
The woman looked momentarily surprised but quickly locked the door and prepared to leave.
Qin Siluan panicked. She glanced at the door, then back at the woman, and quickly asked, “Auntie, do you live here?”
The cleaning lady shook her head. “I just do the cleaning here. No one’s home right now.”
Qin Siluan froze. “No one? Isn’t there someone named Jiang Ling who lives here?”
“Oh, you mean little Jiang? She’s been away for several days. Said she went to another city. She won’t be back for a while. Do you know her?”
Qin Siluan nodded.
The petals in her hands were soft, but they felt sharp and painful in that moment.
“If you’re looking for her, you should come back in a few days. She won’t be back soon. I just came to clean.”
Qin Siluan numbly nodded again.
The cleaning lady studied her. The girl looked like her spirit had been drained. Worried, she asked, “Child, are you alright? You don’t look well. Where do you live? Do you want me to take you home?”
Qin Siluan shook her head.
“No, thank you, Auntie.”
She sat back down and looked at the closed door. In a soft voice, she said, “I don’t want to go home.”
“But you can’t just sit here. Your parents will worry.”
Qin Siluan remained silent.
The cleaning lady tried to persuade her a bit longer, but when it was clear she would not budge, she gave up and left.
As soon as she walked away, Qin Siluan’s tears fell.
She felt wronged.
Jiang Ling was not in Jinlong. At this moment, there was truly no one left who wanted her.
…
After leaving the building, the cleaning lady still felt uneasy. She called Jiang Ling.
“Miss Jiang, sorry to bother you.”
At that moment, Jiang Ling was lounging in Shuicheng, enjoying local delicacies one bite at a time while a pretty masseuse pampered her feet. She was in complete bliss, so the sudden call was a bit unexpected.
“Auntie Yang, what is it?”
“Well, I just finished cleaning your place and saw a little girl sitting at your door. She looked like she had run away from home and was waiting for you. She must have been there for a long time. I tried to send her home, but she refused. She said she knows you…”
“A child?”
Jiang Ling paused. At first, she wondered if it might be a thief. Then she remembered that frail little Qin Siluan.
“Was she pale and kind of pretty?”
“It was too dark to see clearly, but she looked like she had been crying. There were slap marks on her face. Her eyes were quite striking.”
That was probably her.
Maybe she had just fought with her family.
Wasn’t this part of the plot, too?
The side character often fought with her family. After each argument, she would run to her place. That was one of the key ways to gain her affection. Later in the story, Jiang Ling even took her in to keep her from being bullied by her parents.
Jiang Ling sighed. She hadn’t expected the mission to come this soon. She had hoped for a few more days of rest.
“Auntie Yang, can you ask her if her name is Qin Siluan? If it is, leave the key with her. Tell her she can stay at my place whenever she feels unhappy.”
“Alright.”
Qin Siluan sat on the stairs, head bowed. She heard footsteps approaching but didn’t move.
“Little girl, what’s your name? This is for you.”
She looked up slowly. Her movements were stiff, and her cheeks were swollen and red. Her eyes, though just recently filled with tears, still shone brightly.
She watched the woman return with a guarded look, reluctant to give her name.
Auntie Yang remained calm. “Miss Jiang asked me to find out.”
The moment Qin Siluan heard that it was Jiang Ling who wanted to know, she immediately answered.
“Qin Siluan. Qin from Qin Dynasty, Si like company, Luan as in the phoenix.”
Auntie Yang nodded to herself. It was just as Jiang Ling had said.
“Little Jiang told me to give you this key. If you’re feeling sad, you can stay here.”
Qin Siluan stared at the key in disbelief.
“Sister Jiang Ling asked you to give this to me?”
“Yes. You can stay here tonight, but remember to lock all the doors and windows before you leave. Don’t touch anything in the house. Little Jiang doesn’t like people messing with her stuff. Understand? If anything happens, call me. I’m Auntie Yang.”
She spoke gently and clearly.
Qin Siluan nodded quickly and took the bronze key. A bright smile bloomed across her small face.
She looked like she had come back to life.
“Alright, I’ll be off. Remember to call me if something comes up.”
“I will, thank you, Auntie Yang!”
She clutched the key and nodded eagerly.
After Auntie Yang left, Qin Siluan carefully unlocked the door.
She turned on the lights. Everything was the same as before. The wooden furnishings and the arrangement were exactly as they had been two weeks ago. She had only visited once, yet this place gave her a sense of peace.
Compared to where she usually lived, this felt like home.
Maybe it was simply because it was where Jiang Ling had lived.
…
After the concert and a foot massage, Jiang Ling found Shuicheng dull. The next day, she booked a ticket back to Jinlong, which was three days earlier than she had originally planned.
She had planned to return in three days, but the thought of Qin Siluan sitting at her door, crying with tear-streaked cheeks, lingered in her mind. She had to admit, she did feel a little pity.
Just a little.
She was not overly compassionate and was not easily moved.
There were even mission targets who had died for her in the past, and she had not blinked an eye.
That tiny sliver of pity was only because Qin Siluan was a child, and she was a beautiful one.
Nothing more.
But when Qin Siluan saw Jiang Ling return, she was thrilled. The moment she saw her open the door, she rushed forward and hugged her.
“Sister Jiang Ling~”
Her voice was choked with emotion. Was she crying?
Jiang Ling held back her distaste and let the girl hug her for three seconds before pulling her away. She did not want tears and snot on her idol-inspired dress.
“Why are you crying? Was it uncomfortable sleeping here last night?”
Qin Siluan shook her head quickly. “No, I’m just… just really happy.”
She was so happy.
She had thought it would be a long time before Jiang Ling came back. But now she was here. Could it be because Auntie Yang told her she was waiting? Was that why she returned?
“Sister, are you hungry? Auntie Yang brought groceries. I can cook for you.”
She pushed the suitcase inside and looked up at Jiang Ling with eager eyes.
Jiang Ling did not stop her. After all, the girl had stayed for free. Letting her carry a suitcase was not a big deal.
She did not think there was anything wrong with letting a ten-year-old haul her heavy luggage.
“Go ahead.”
“What would you like to eat, Sister?”
“Anything. Just simple home-style dishes.”
She had eaten too much junk in the past few days. Now she just wanted something comforting.
Qin Siluan nodded right away. After putting the suitcase where Jiang Ling instructed, she rushed to the kitchen. She was so small that she had to stand on a stool to cook.
While Qin Siluan was busy, Jiang Ling wandered around. She noticed the girl had not touched her belongings and had slept obediently in the study. That satisfied her.
She took a quick look around and washed her hands. When she returned to the living room and sat on the sofa, she saw a photo frame on the coffee table.
Inside it, someone had carefully placed seven flower petals. They were glued to white paper. Below them, in neat handwriting, were the words:
A gift for Sister.
