- Chapter 5 - The Most Beautiful Flower
Jiang Ling took Qin Siluan out for a bowl of spicy hot pot for lunch. Once they had finished, she prepared to walk her back.
When Qin Siluan heard she was being escorted home, she nearly jumped with excitement. But after walking for a while, she began to hesitate. Her steps slowed, and she casually said, “Actually, I usually don’t go home at noon. I prefer to read in the library.”
Jiang Ling raised an eyebrow and smiled at her with a playful look. Qin Siluan did not understand what that expression meant, only that it made her feel uneasy. She was not someone who liked reading. She simply did not want to return to that “home.”
Still, she could not let Sister Jiang Ling see her true self.
Anyone else could see through her, but Jiang Ling could not.
She did not know what had changed. She used to treat people sincerely and had never pretended or lied. Yet ever since meeting Jiang Ling, she had told lie after lie. She pretended to be gentle, kind, and well-read.
But she used to look down on those behaviors.
As she struggled with her thoughts, that gentle hand once again landed on her head. It softly patted her hair, and the voice that followed was so warm it felt suffocating.
“Oh, really? Our Siluan is such a good child who loves reading. That’s wonderful. Sister loves kids who enjoy books.”
Qin Siluan: !!!!
Her face flushed red as she nodded vigorously. “Yes, I will definitely study hard in the future!”
“In that case, I’ll drop you off at the library. You can walk back to school from there, right?”
Jiang Ling bent forward, her clear eyes meeting Qin Siluan’s. Her gaze was gentle, as if she saw Qin Siluan as a delicate flower in need of care, too fragile to withstand even the wind or rain.
Qin Siluan replied, “I can do it, Sister. Don’t worry.”
Hearing her response, Jiang Ling quietly sighed in relief. Even her smile felt more genuine than before. Earlier, she had only smiled for the mission. Now she was truly happy. She definitely did not want to drag herself out of bed just to escort a child to school.
“Our little Siluan is amazing!”
Her delicate face lit up with a dazzling smile, and her bright eyes curved like crescent moons.
Jiang Ling looked so radiant, like a small sun, that Qin Siluan dared not look straight at her.
She was afraid that if she looked too long, she would be drawn closer. Yet if she got closer, all her ugliness would be exposed by such a brilliant light.
“Alright then. Study well and do your best. I’m heading home now.”
Jiang Ling waved goodbye with a cheerful smile. Qin Siluan nodded and sweetly said goodbye in return.
After Jiang Ling left, Qin Siluan turned and headed for the library with steady, purposeful steps.
She had promised Sister Jiang Ling she would study hard, and she was determined to keep that promise.
…
Whether or not Qin Siluan actually went to study, Jiang Ling did not know and had no desire to find out.
To put it plainly, she was just a cunning little side character. No matter how pure or studious she acted, Jiang Ling would never believe it. Even if she did, whether the girl liked books or not had nothing to do with her.
In Jiang Ling’s eyes, Qin Siluan was just an NPC she needed to complete missions with. Once the task was done, she would leave. Why would she care about the girl’s schemes?
Besides, the task system in this world was broken. Apart from a few necessary plot lines, there were no minor missions at all. So Jiang Ling decided to enjoy herself. She treated this world like a trial run for her future retirement.
Lying back with joy, she picked up her phone and started buying concert tickets.
She had recently become a fan of a sweet-voiced, beautiful idol. The girl group was holding a national tour. Jiang Ling checked the tour route and found it was nearing the end, with only three cities left: Nancheng, Liaocheng, and Shuicheng.
She had already looked up information about those three cities. Each was a scenic tourist spot. Nancheng was rich in culture and known as an ancient capital of six dynasties. Liaocheng was famous for its hotpot and various noodle dishes, along with vibrant shopping districts offering food, entertainment, and shopping. Shuicheng was picturesque, known as a land of fish and rice, filled with beautiful women, and home to top-rated massages and foot spas.
There was food, fun, and sightseeing.
There was no reason not to go!
Without hesitation, she booked VIP tickets for all three concerts. These seats were the closest to the stage. Since the next plot point was still far off, she was going to chase stars and admire beautiful girls.
She could not care less about heroines or villains.
After buying glow sticks and fan outfits, Jiang Ling packed her luggage and headed off as soon as her packages arrived.
…
Qin Siluan had no idea that Jiang Ling had already left Jinlong.
All she knew was that she missed her terribly during this time.
They had only met twice, but Jiang Ling had already become the most important person in her life.
She knew exactly how happy she felt when she saw Jiang Ling, and how disappointed she became when she could not find her.
Every day after school, she would dawdle for half an hour. She would stroll slowly down the street in front of the elementary school and even wandered to the gates of Jinlong Middle School.
She waited again and again, watching the crowds come and go. Even when the campus emptied out, she never saw Jiang Ling.
Every morning on the way to school, she would pick a pretty flower to give to Jiang Ling. But each day, she returned with it in disappointment.
Lying on her desk, she counted the flowers in a glass bottle. There were already fourteen.
The first one had begun to wilt. Even though she watered it carefully every day, the petals had started to curl and soften.
This made her feel disheartened.
She had planned to give all the most beautiful flowers to Sister Jiang Ling as a gift.
She had thought her sister would love them. But now, they were beginning to wilt…
“Trying to grow flowers, are you? What, you think you’re the precious little daughter of the Qin family now?”
A sharp, bitter voice came from behind.
Qin Siluan froze, her hand paused over the petals. After arranging the flowers neatly, she said nothing. She opened her bag, took out her schoolbooks, and lowered her head to start her homework.
Wang Rong, standing at the doorway, rolled her eyes and stomped over. Suddenly, her face twisted in anger. She grabbed Qin Siluan’s hair from behind.
Qin Siluan cried out and quickly shielded her head, her face forced upward in pain.
The woman snarled, “You little brat, ignoring me now? Do you even know who’s been feeding and clothing you?”
Qin Siluan had been glaring at her, but now she smirked with cold sarcasm. “You? You actually think you’ve been taking care of me?”
Wang Rong was a nanny hired by the Qin family to look after her until she became an adult. But she used that money to gamble, eat, drink, and bring strange men home.
They had only been in Jinlong for two weeks, yet Qin Siluan had already caught at least five different men coming in and out of their house.
The entire place was filthy, except for her own room. It reeked everywhere else.
Sometimes at night, strange men would sneak into her room. That was why she barely slept. Even if she wanted to, she could not. She never knew what monsters might open the unlocked door and take advantage of her while she was asleep.
Whenever she protested, Wang Rong laughed at her for being dramatic.
Sometimes she even kicked her out in the middle of the night to make room for others.
It got worse over time. Wang Rong knew that no matter how she treated this girl, the Qin family would never question her. They had only hired her to keep Qin Siluan away from their family, to trap her in this remote town and make sure she never had a chance to rise.
In short, they wanted to destroy her.
Destroy the mistake that should never have been born.
So whenever she was upset, Wang Rong slapped her. When she felt irritated, she yanked her hair. Sometimes when a man looked at Qin Siluan too long, Wang Rong went mad with jealousy. She would tear Qin Siluan’s clothes, burn her arms with cigarettes, and set her hair on fire.
This time, provoked by Qin Siluan’s defiance, Wang Rong lost control again. She grabbed her and lit a lighter to burn her hair.
But Qin Siluan had expected this. As soon as she saw her reach for the lighter, she broke free and ran far away.
Wang Rong screamed, “Get back here!”
Qin Siluan looked at her like she was insane, and it pushed Wang Rong over the edge. She spotted the vase on the table. Its bright beauty stood in stark contrast to the messy room, which made it all the more irritating.
She grabbed the vase and smiled cruelly. She knew she had found this girl’s weakness.
The moment Qin Siluan saw her holding the vase, her mocking expression changed into fear.
Like a proud phoenix suddenly struck down.
“Put it down.”
Wang Rong grinned. “So precious, is it? Who were you going to give it to?”
“Aunt Rong, it was my fault. I should not have argued with you. Please, put the vase down, alright?” She pleaded.
The more she begged, the more pleased Wang Rong became. “Oh? Now you’re calling me aunt? Where did your tough attitude go, Miss Qin?”
Qin Siluan said nothing.
“Tell you what. Slap yourself twice, and I’ll give it back. How about that?”
Before her voice faded, two crisp slaps echoed. Qin Siluan’s cheeks flushed red, and she stared at Wang Rong.
“Is that enough?”
Wang Rong stifled a laugh. “I didn’t hear it. Do it again.”
“Slap slap~”
Two more smacks.
Wang Rong ordered, “Say you were wrong.”
Qin Siluan said, “I was wrong.”
Wang Rong asked, “Will you still argue with me again?”
Qin Siluan replied, “No. From now on, whatever Aunt Rong says is what I’ll do.”
Wang Rong said, “Alright, then. Here’s your vase.”
She smiled and handed it to her.
Qin Siluan had just breathed a sigh of relief and started to smile when Wang Rong suddenly turned the vase upside down. The flowers fell to the ground. She stepped on them with her high heels and crushed them again and again.
The fourteen vibrant flowers turned into a soggy mess.
As she walked past Qin Siluan, Wang Rong sneered. “You? Grow flowers? What a joke, you filthy brat.”
Qin Siluan’s pupils shrank. She stopped breathing.
Her body trembled as she crouched down. Like something precious, she picked up the scattered petals one by one. Her tears fell in heavy drops.
These were the gifts she had prepared for Sister Jiang Ling.
But now, they had turned into this…
What should I do?
What should I do?
