- Chapter 3 - This Kid Is Quite Sensible
Jiang Ling finally felt content after eating her fill. Rubbing her round stomach, she only wanted to sleep. She glanced at the leftover trash on the table and did not feel like moving.
Her gaze drifted toward Qin Siluan. The child immediately understood, placed the last bite of mini bun into her mouth, and stood up to clean the table.
Jiang Ling was quite pleased. This child had good instincts. She liked people who understood cues because communication was less of a chore.
After lounging in the chair for a while, she went to the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face. When she finished, she looked at the child who had set the trash outside the door.
“After cleaning up, go brush your teeth. I left a toothbrush on the sink for you. I’m going to bed now. Do not call me unless it is something important.”
Qin Siluan nodded obediently and watched Jiang Ling enter her room and close the door.
Once she was gone, the child tiptoed into the bathroom and smiled faintly when she saw the pink children’s toothbrush waiting on the sink. She began brushing her teeth.
However, once she was done, a question arose. Where was she supposed to sleep?
…
Jiang Ling lay comfortably on the two-meter-wide bed, every cell in her body relaxed. There was no annoying system voice issuing tasks. By right, she should have fallen asleep instantly. Yet she had been tossing and turning for two hours, trying different positions, without the slightest hint of sleepiness.
She checked her phone. It was already 10 PM.
The barbecue from earlier had made her thirsty, so she decided to get a glass of water from the kitchen.
But when she opened the door, she came face-to-face with a pair of wide, blinking eyes. In the dim night, the shimmering pupils startled her. She quickly hit the light switch and found it was Qin Siluan.
“What are you doing here? It’s so late. Why aren’t you sleeping?”
The child looked at a loss and tugged at the hem of her T-shirt without replying.
Jiang Ling stared at her awkward little posture and finally realized. “Don’t tell me I forgot to tell you where to sleep, and that’s why you’ve just been standing here.”
The child said nothing, but her silence confirmed it.
Jiang Ling was speechless. So much for calling her easy to communicate with. This child was a complete airhead. She honestly doubted if this girl could ever grow up to scheme against the female lead.
She had never seen such a soft and gentle villainess.
Jiang Ling rubbed her forehead and looked around the apartment. Besides her own bedroom, there was nowhere else suitable to sleep. The other room did not have a bed, just a desk. The dining room had only single sofas, far too small for curling up.
But sharing a room with a strange child was absolutely out of the question.
She turned back with a quilt and spread it on the study floor. Then she gave the child another blanket. “You’ll sleep on the study floor tonight.”
The child nodded obediently and even remembered to thank her.
Jiang Ling accepted the gratitude with a clear conscience. She was under no obligation to take care of children. If it were not for the mission script requiring her to become the villainess’s confidante and help her complete the task, she would never have brought the child home. What she had done was more than enough.
As for making a ten-year-old sleep on the floor being heartless, she had no interest in listening to such opinions.
She was Jiang Ling, who had survived ninety-nine worlds and seen the darkest sides of humanity. She knew that not being blindly kind to others was the greatest kindness one could show to themselves.
…
Qin Siluan hugged the soft blanket and lay on the floor. The sound of rain outside the window reached her ears. She smiled sweetly.
She closed her eyes with peace in her heart. Tonight is the happiest night of my life. I’m not cold. I’m not hungry. And I met a very, very kind and beautiful sister.
…
Jiang Ling was woken by her alarm. When she saw the time on her phone, 6:30 AM, she nearly passed out. She had forgotten she was currently a miserable middle school sophomore who had to attend classes.
She reached to silence the alarm and considered going back to sleep. After all, she played the role of a poor student, and skipping school would not be an issue.
But the moment she closed her eyes again, she suddenly remembered. Today was the second day of school. According to the storyline, the female lead would meet the male lead, who had missed the first day due to illness. When the male lead showed kindness to the female lead, the young villainess would witness it, become jealous, and lock the female lead in a restroom. The male lead would rescue her and severely scold the villainess.
Jiang Ling sat up with a groan.
If the villainess got scolded by the male lead, she, the “nanny,” would inevitably be dragged into helping the villainess and become disliked by both leads.
Another day of early morning obligations.
Once she completed the task in this world, she would pick a comfortable cultivation realm. No classes, no jobs, just endless rare creatures to eat.
With a sigh, she prepared to wash up. But when she opened the door, she found that the door to the study was already open. The blanket had been folded neatly and placed beside the desk. From the dining room came faint sounds.
She walked over and saw the child standing on a small stool, busily working at the stove.
Hearing her footsteps, the child turned around, looking slightly embarrassed. “Sister, you’re awake. Did I wake you?”
Jiang Ling shook her head. “What are you doing?”
“Cooking noodles.”
She lifted the pot lid to show her.
Inside the small pot floated thin, white noodles. Beside it, a bowl held stir-fried tomato and eggs.
“I opened the fridge without asking. Sister, you’re not mad at me, right?”
The aroma rushed out when the lid was lifted. The barbecue had long been digested, and Jiang Ling was now starving. Her stomach growled furiously at the scent.
She waved her hand. “No, go on.”
Then, feeling a bit guilty for sounding too entitled, she added, “Be careful.”
The child seemed encouraged. She nodded. “I will. Don’t worry, Sister.”
Jiang Ling smiled and went to the bathroom, where she found that the child had already prepared her toothbrush, toothpaste, and rinsing cup.
She was impressed. The girl had initiative.
By the time she came out, the table was set with bowls and chopsticks. The steaming noodles filled the room with warmth. Jiang Ling sat down and took a few bites before noticing that the child was watching her.
“Did you already eat?”
The child shook her head.
“You’re not hungry?”
No reply.
Jiang Ling raised an eyebrow. “What is it?”
Qin Siluan whispered, “There was only one portion in the fridge.”
Jiang Ling was speechless.
“Then go get another set of utensils.”
The child shook her head. “It’s fine. I’m okay.”
Jiang Ling arched a brow. What a delicate little white lotus. No wonder she’s the villainess. She knows how to act pitiful.
“Go. Get it.”
Finally, the girl stood on tiptoe and fetched another set. She stared as Jiang Ling scooped a small portion of noodles from her bowl into the child’s. “You don’t mind that I’ve already eaten from it, right?”
The child shook her head.
With noodles shared, the two quietly ate breakfast, both eating quickly.
Jiang Ling could not help but praise her. Despite looking slow and dull, this child’s cooking was surprisingly good. A simple tomato and egg noodle dish had rich color, fragrance, and taste.
Qin Siluan, on the other hand, had barely eaten anything the night before and was starving.
After finishing, the child took the initiative to clean up. Jiang Ling grabbed her schoolbag.
When they stepped outside, the sky had just started to brighten. Jiang Ling muttered, “I should’ve stayed in bed. But…”
She glanced at the child beside her and sighed.
Qin Siluan had heard her. She also saw Jiang Ling’s gaze. Like being scalded, she quickly looked away and tugged at the hem of her shirt.
She wanted to tell her sister that she did not have to get up so early just to send her to school. It was okay to sleep in. She could go by herself. She was used to it.
But for some reason, she did not say it. She thought, If Sister Jiang Ling takes me to school today, then I will be very happy.
…
As Qin Siluan had hoped, Jiang Ling indeed walked her all the way to the school gate.
The child was both shy and happy. When they reached the gate, she suddenly gave Jiang Ling a quick hug and let go immediately, her face turning red.
“Thank you.”
Then she ran off, leaving Jiang Ling bewildered.
“Are villainesses these days so easily embarrassed?”
She adjusted her baseball cap and crossed the street to the wonton shop opposite Jinlong Elementary School.
The reason she brought the child all the way was because, during their walk, she had asked what else the girl could cook besides noodles. The girl had replied that she could make wontons that were just as good as the ones at this shop. That had stuck in Jiang Ling’s mind, and after getting her confirmation, she decided she had to try them. After all, half a bowl of noodles was not enough to fill her.
…
Qin Siluan hummed as she walked toward her classroom. Her mood was indescribably joyful. In all her years, she rarely felt happy. But last night and this morning, she had been truly happy. Even the clear sky seemed more beautiful than usual. The grass by the roadside looked greener. Everything seemed newly colored.
“Qin Siluan!”
A voice called from behind.
She turned and saw the classmate who had tried to steal her dress last night. The girl was glaring at her with a vicious expression.
Qin Siluan’s face fell. She became more alert.
“What do you want?”
The girl stormed up to her, her face twisted. “Don’t think I’ll let you off just because someone helped you last night. You better hand over that dress, or I’ll make sure you can’t survive at school!”
Qin Siluan said, “I won’t give it to you.”
The girl grabbed her braid and threatened, “Say that again.”
Qin Siluan winced from the pain and covered her hair, but she did not speak or back down. Her gaze turned colder.
Her eyes landed on the other girl’s name badge. Clearly printed on it were the characters “Song Yanhuo.” She looked at it a few times as if committing it to memory.
“What are you looking at?”
Song Yanhuo noticed the strange gaze and looked down at her badge. She quickly covered it with her hand.
Qin Siluan turned away and ignored her.
Song Yanhuo grew angrier. She raised her hand, ready to slap her, when a voice shouted.
“What are you doing?!”
