Qin Siluan was very well-behaved. Even after entering Jiang Ling’s home, she did not look around or wander. She simply clutched her backpack and stood stiffly by the entrance. Her big eyes only dared to look at Jiang Ling.

After taking a few steps, Jiang Ling turned and saw the girl still standing there. She waved her hand. “Come in.”

As if she had just received a pardon, the child shuffled forward a few steps but still did not move too much.

Jiang Ling felt speechless. Was this timid little girl the same one who had just slapped someone and snatched a dress? All that fierce energy was gone. Now she looked like a lamb awaiting slaughter, timid and innocent.

“No need to be so restrained. You can look around and move freely.”

Jiang Ling was not that familiar with the house either, but after traveling through so many worlds, she had learned not to show it. Her eyes swept over the room, and she quickly got a general sense of the layout.

The apartment was not large. Its style was minimal, with natural wooden tones. To the left of the entrance was the kitchen and dining area. To the right was the living room and balcony. A hallway in the center led to the bathroom. On each side of the hallway were two rooms, one of which was larger and the other smaller. One had a bed, wardrobe, nightstand, and another balcony. The other had two large bookshelves and a desk, likely a study.

Jiang Ling liked the apartment’s style. What she could not stand was the hygiene.

She entered the bathroom, adjusted the water temperature, and waved to Qin Siluan who was still standing in the hallway. “Put your backpack on the chair and come take a hot shower.”

Qin Siluan looked a bit shy but obediently placed her backpack on a chair in the dining room and slowly walked toward her.

“South side is hot water. North side is cold. Adjust it yourself. This is a new towel you can use. Just wear the slippers for now. I brought you a clean T-shirt and underwear. They should be clean. Make do with them for tonight.”

Qin Siluan listened carefully to her instructions, but this kind treatment made her feel uncomfortable. So her attention was not fully on the bathroom setup. Her gaze occasionally drifted to the sister who was not much older than herself.

“Is there something on my face?”

Qin Siluan quickly shook her head and looked away.

Jiang Ling found it odd. She walked to the sink. In front of the makeup cabinet was a large mirror. When she saw her reflection, she froze, then sighed in exasperation.

The face in the mirror was hers, just younger. That was intentional. All missions used the tasker’s own face, adjusted to fit the character’s age. So she was not unfamiliar with the face. What unsettled her was the chaotic makeup smudged all over. Colorful eye shadow, thick mascara, and eyeliner had all run from the rain. Her face looked like a disaster scene. Her hair was a wild mix of gold and pink.

It was no longer just a disaster. It was a horror film.

No wonder the child had still dared to follow her home.

She quickly grabbed the makeup remover and wiped off the mess. Then she tied her tangled gold-pink hair into a bun. When she finally saw a normal-looking person in the mirror again, she let out a breath and turned to smile at the child.

“Sorry if I scared you.”

Qin Siluan had been watching her the entire time. So when she saw her smiling after washing up, she quickly lowered her head. Hearing her words, she shook her head.

Softly she said, “You didn’t.”

Jiang Ling did not mind. “Take your shower first. Just toss your dirty clothes here. I’ll clean up later.”

Qin Siluan lifted her eyes and saw the bamboo laundry basket. She nodded and lowered her head again.

Out of Jiang Ling’s view, her fair little face blushed slightly.

Jiang Ling shut the bathroom door and went to the bedroom to fetch a pair of disposable slippers. After putting them on, she walked down the hallway, frowned, and started tidying up the house.

Strictly speaking, she did not have a cleanliness obsession. She just did not like mess. She preferred her space clean and simple. Instead of flashy designs, she liked layouts that made her feel relaxed.

This was a lesson learned from completing ninety-nine tasks. Mission success was not the most important thing. Living comfortably at every moment was.

In past task worlds, others had served her. This time there were no maids. There was only a child in the house, and the cleaner was not scheduled to come until the weekend. She could not wait, so she had to do it herself.

She quietly cursed the colleague who wrote this mission’s script.

At least the NPC hadn’t completely ruined the place.

After loading the dirty clothes into the washing machine and mopping the floors, the place finally looked like a proper home. She adjusted the cushions on the sofa and hung the cleaned mop before heading to the kitchen.

She boiled a kettle of water, found two glass cups, and made two glasses of vitamin C water. At last, she slumped into a chair, hugged one cup, and pulled out her phone to browse the takeout menu.

Jiang Ling had two great loves in life, which were lounging and eating.

She could cook, but barely. Unless she was in a post-apocalyptic world with no chefs, she would never lift a finger in the kitchen. If someone else could do it, she would never do it herself.

And now she was finally in a modern world with takeout.

Fried chicken, beer, and grilled skewers were all things she craved.

Her last world had been an apocalypse. She starved and froze for over a hundred years. She was dying to indulge.

…

After her shower, Qin Siluan quietly opened the bathroom door a crack. Her large, grape-like eyes peered out anxiously. She wanted to call out, but felt shy. Her face turned red with worry.

Jiang Ling, sitting in the dining room, heard the door open. But after a while, the child still had not come out. Curious, she got up and walked toward the bathroom. Just as her head peeked around, the door slammed shut.

Jiang Ling: ?

She approached and knocked.

“Qin Siluan? What’s wrong?”

There was no answer. She thought the child might be in trouble. She grabbed the doorknob and pushed. A faint resistance pressed against the door.

“Sister~”

The soft voice came from inside.

Jiang Ling pushed the door open a crack. Through it, she saw the child holding the door with one hand and tugging down her T-shirt with the other. Her legs were pressed together, her face red.

“Sister, this shirt is too short…”

…

Jiang Ling paused, then realized what she meant.

“Ah, sorry. I forgot to get you shorts.”

She had always liked to wear an oversized T-shirt at home after a shower. She had forgotten not everyone was like her. She hurried to the bedroom, fetched some shorts, and passed them through the door.

The child took them, closed the door, and reopened it a minute later. Her face still held an uneasy blush.

“Thank you, Sister.”

She spoke softly.

It was then that Jiang Ling finally got a good look at the girl.

Her undeveloped frame was slightly thin. Her skin was pale as snow, smooth and tender. After the shower, it held a faint pink glow. Her small oval face was delicate like a doll. Her eyes sparkled like crystals. Her long eyelashes looked like little feather fans. Her hair, still damp, was tied up.

Jiang Ling could not help but marvel, If the villainess looked this angelic, how beautiful must the female lead be?

“Here’s the hair dryer. Do you want to use it yourself or should I help?”

“I can do it.”

The girl took the hair dryer and began drying her hair.

Jiang Ling leaned against the bathroom doorframe with her phone. “What do you want to eat tonight? There’s no food here. I’m ordering takeout. Is there anything you like or dislike?”

The girl looked at her reflection and shook her head. After a moment, she softly said, “I can eat anything.”

Jiang Ling looked pleased. “I like children who aren’t picky eaters.”

Qin Siluan’s lips curved into a slight smile at that.

After drying her hair, Jiang Ling handed her a warm glass of vitamin C water. “Drink this. You got caught in the rain. VC will help your immunity.”

Qin Siluan froze, then took a sip. It was strawberry-flavored. Warmth spread through her stomach.

She had not felt this warm in a long time.

She sat obediently in a chair at the dining table. Jiang Ling ordered takeout, then took her clothes to shower.

She usually wore a simple T-shirt after bathing. But remembering how bashful the girl had been, she changed into a pink nightdress.

Her shoulder-length gold-pink hair was tied up. With a face mask on, she carried the laundry basket out, pulled the clean clothes from the machine, and loaded the dirty ones in. As she prepared to hang them, Qin Siluan came over and helped.

Jiang Ling’s impression of the girl improved a lot.

Deep down, this girl still understood manners. Maybe they could get along.

Once the clothes were hung, the food arrived.

When Qin Siluan saw the table full of beer, barbecue, and fried chicken, she froze.

“Not eating?” Jiang Ling looked at her.

Qin Siluan quickly shook her head, took the fried chicken Jiang Ling handed her, and slowly took a bite.

One bite. Her face changed. Too sweet…

A bite of grilled sausage. Too spicy…

Grilled tofu. Too salty…

In the end, Qin Siluan could only nibble on a grilled mini bun.

Jiang Ling did not notice her troubled face at all. She only felt thrilled.

In this world filled with spices and ingredients, life was too good. She never wanted to chew cold, tough zombie meat again.
