Jiang Ling originally wanted to help the child pack some clothes and school supplies. But as soon as she was about to go upstairs, the child stopped her.

“Sister, you should stay down here. I can go up myself.”

She spoke quietly and quickly ran up the stairs. Soon she returned with only a schoolbag in her hand.

“You don’t need anything else?”

At the very least, she could bring some clothes, toiletries, or bedding because she might need them.

Qin Siluan shook her head.

Jiang Ling figured perhaps the girl did not want to see anything from her old life again, and she could understand that.

Feeling for the child who had just lost her mother, Jiang Ling reached out and took the schoolbag from her. It was heavy and had sharp corners. It seemed to be full of books.

After getting into a taxi with her, Jiang Ling sat beside Qin Siluan and looked at the crime scene behind them, still cordoned off with yellow tape. Then she glanced at the little girl slowly unwrapping a piece of candy next to her. The strange feeling in her heart only grew stronger.

This child was too calm.

There were no outbursts, not even sadness. It was as if those emotions vanished the moment she saw Jiang Ling.

“Siluan, can you tell me what happened yesterday?”

Qin Siluan unwrapped the candy she had earlier received from the policeman and placed it into her mouth. The moment she heard Jiang Ling’s question, her chewing stopped, and a faint shadow passed through her eyes. She nodded.

“After you left yesterday, I went home. She brought that uncle back and then got mad at me. I was too scared, so I went upstairs. When she went to take a bath, I heard that uncle on the phone talking about needing money. He went into her room to find it but didn’t succeed. I was afraid he would hit me, so I told him she had money and could help him out. He said if he got the money, he would take me away and let me live somewhere clean. So I told him how much she had… I also said he could cook some noodles for her and cheer her up after her bath. But I didn’t expect them to argue… to fight so fiercely… or for it to end like that…”

As she spoke, regret filled her expression while she lowered her small head, looking as though she were frightened.

But not once did she call Wang Rong her mother. She only referred to her as “she.”

This struck Jiang Ling as strange.

Even if there was hatred, wouldn’t she still say “my mom” when talking to others?

Could it be because Wang Rong had died and she avoided mentioning her?

There was something else.

She asked, “Siluan, your mom passed away, so where is your dad?”

“My dad doesn’t want me anymore.”

That was the truth. Her father in the capital had indeed abandoned her.

But to Jiang Ling, it sounded different.

She wondered if perhaps her parents had fallen out, and her father chose not to care anymore. Or maybe they divorced?

Yet, she remembered the supporting character’s backstory involved growing up in poverty, being abused by both parents, and eventually developing a twisted personality.

What bothered her most was Qin Siluan’s behavior. She did not seem the least bit upset about her mother’s death. Instead, there was… relief?

Even in the story, the grown-up version of the supporting character cried bitterly after taking revenge on her abusive parents.

So why was the younger version even colder after her mother’s death?

Having lived through ninety-nine worlds, Jiang Ling was highly attuned to human emotions. Even though Qin Siluan tried to hide her feelings, Jiang Ling still noticed the subtle relaxation in her posture and the slight ease in her voice.

It was the kind of relief that came after long-term suffering.

Now Jiang Ling had to seriously consider whether the girl in front of her was really the supporting character from the script. Could she have mistaken someone else?

But without the system to confirm the target’s identity, she had no way to verify the details of the story. That made things tricky.

Jiang Ling rested her chin on her hand and stared at Qin Siluan. Her lazy gaze was like a needle prick, making the girl visibly uncomfortable.

“Sister Jiang Ling, what’s wrong?”

Jiang Ling shook her head and sat up properly.

“Just rest at home for now. When you feel ready to go to school, I’ll take you.”

Qin Siluan beamed. That meant she could live with her sister, walk to school together, and finally have someone waiting at the gate for her after class.

“Sister Jiang Ling, can I ask for a small favor?”

She looked up cautiously, a hint of sweetness in her tone. After receiving permission, she asked politely, “When we go to school, can I hold your hand?”

Jiang Ling: ?

The child quickly explained, “Because I see a lot of kids holding hands with their parents on the way to school. I want someone to walk with me like that too.”

Jiang Ling nodded. “Alright.”

Holding hands was no big deal.

…

Back at the Jinjiang apartment, Jiang Ling settled Qin Siluan in. As she lay in bed, her thoughts became increasingly tangled. Qin Siluan’s attitude toward Wang Rong’s death was nothing like a daughter’s grief.

And maybe it was just her imagination, but from what Qin Siluan said, it seemed Liu Li’s decision to fight Wang Rong came from learning she had money. That idea had been planted by Qin Siluan. Even the suggestion to cook noodles came from her, supposedly to cheer Wang Rong up.

Looking at it that way, was this girl just thoughtful or deeply calculating?

If Liu Li had only knocked Wang Rong unconscious and fled, the still-burning gas could have poisoned her. Either way, Wang Rong was doomed.

It all seemed unconnected to Qin Siluan, yet everything was also tied to her.

If it really was deliberate, could a ten-year-old possess such intricate planning?

Such precision would be terrifying.

Jiang Ling tossed and turned, unable to sleep. She had a nagging sense that the plot had veered off course. This kind of accident was not supposed to happen, not to the main or supporting characters.

Even in the protagonist’s original storyline, she only punished her wicked guardian after entering high school by sending her to jail and reclaiming her support funds.

That was a major triumph in the story.

Slapping down the villain and reclaiming her rights marked the moment when the gentle heroine finally stood tall. It was satisfying in every way.

But if the timeline was pushed forward by six or seven years, the genre shifted from inspiring to terrifying.

Jiang Ling sat up and looked out the window.

Once suspicion took root, it would grow like a towering tree.

She got dressed and went to inquire around Qin Siluan’s old home.

The neighbors, knowing she had taken Qin Siluan in, eagerly shared information about her family.

Everyone said Wang Rong was Qin Siluan’s mother, and Wang Rong had always introduced her as her daughter. Qin Siluan never denied it, though she disliked calling her “mom.”

Even the police report confirmed they were mother and daughter.

This confirmed that Qin Siluan was indeed the supporting character.

Jiang Ling still found it hard to believe.

Her mission was to bond with the villainess, and everything seemed to be progressing as planned. But she truly did not want a ten-year-old to be so numb to family and death.

…

The next morning, Qin Siluan had already prepared breakfast and stood ready with her schoolbag.

“Don’t you want more rest?”

“No need.”

Qin Siluan shook her head.

Compared to a break, walking to school hand-in-hand with Sister Jiang Ling was far more exciting.

Jiang Ling looked at her bright, expectant face and felt conflicted.

On the way, she held Qin Siluan’s hand. The child’s hand was warm, and her smile never faded. Jiang Ling frowned slightly and asked casually, “Siluan, are those two kids from the restroom still bothering you?”

Qin Siluan paused. “Sister Jiang Ling, why ask about them now?”

Because they were the heroine and hero, of course. She had to check.

“I just care about your school life. You live with me now, so I’m like half a guardian. It’s my job to ask.”

Qin Siluan’s face softened. She felt guilty for doubting Jiang Ling’s intentions. Her sister was clearly just looking out for her.

She silently scolded herself and replied, “They haven’t bothered me since you scolded them.”

In fact, Song Yanhuan now ran away whenever she saw her. She would get others to isolate her, but Qin Siluan didn’t care. As long as she had Sister Jiang Ling, nothing else mattered.

Jiang Ling responded with a simple sound.

“Have you seen them again? Especially that boy. He’s quite good-looking. Do many girls in school like him?”

Qin Siluan thought for a moment and nodded. “Yes, but he only likes playing with Song Yanhuan.”

“Who is Song Yanhuan?”

“The girl from the restroom.”

Jiang Ling nodded. That must be the heroine.

But she was curious. “Don’t you get jealous? Don’t you want to play with that boy?”

Qin Siluan blinked in confusion. “Why would I? He’s short. I don’t like him.”

Jiang Ling: ?

Wasn’t the villainess supposed to fall for the male lead at first sight and target the heroine out of jealousy?

“Sister Jiang Ling, those two over there are Song Yanhuan and Ming Ze.”

She pointed to the east gate. Jiang Ling looked and saw two kids walking together. The boy chased the girl while she scolded him.

It really was the male lead chasing the “heroine.”

Jiang Ling glanced at the child beside her and sighed. Qin Siluan really was the villainess.

A girl this calculating might be too much for the heroine to handle.

“Sister Jiang Ling, I’m going in now.”

Qin Siluan waved goodbye politely. Jiang Ling waved back and watched her leave.

Just as she turned to go, she saw a couple walking toward her. The closer they came, the stronger the smell of smoke. The woman was gaudy, and the man looked sneaky. Both had sharp, unpleasant faces.

The woman grabbed her arm enthusiastically. “Are you the one who took in that little brat whose mom died?”

Jiang Ling knew she meant Qin Siluan and disliked the wording.

“We live on the same street,” the woman said, tugging her sleeve.

Jiang Ling did not need to hear more. She already knew this woman was here to gossip.

“Sorry, Auntie. I need to get to school.”

She tried to leave, but the woman chased after her.

“Wait, girl, don’t go! I just want to ask. My daughter goes to the same school as that little brat. Her name is Song Yanhuan. We live on the same street. Let’s chat…”

Jiang Ling suddenly stopped and turned around.

The woman looked startled.

Jiang Ling asked, “You are Song Yanhuan’s what?”

“Her mom,” the woman replied.

The man added, “And I’m her dad.”

Jiang Ling looked them up and down. “Her biological parents?”

The woman frowned, and the man snapped, “What kind of question is that? Of course she is. She looks just like me!”

But Jiang Ling said nothing. She only furrowed her brow and stared.

Indeed, Song Yanhuan looked more like this woman, not the man.

Compared to Wang Rong and Qin Siluan, there was not a trace of family resemblance.

Wang Rong was not Qin Siluan’s mother. And Qin Siluan was not the villainess.

Because the villainess’s real parents were standing right here, alive and well.
