- Chapter 1 - Come to My House
The early autumn in Jinlong still carried the temper of summer. The weather remained unpredictable. At four in the afternoon, the sun that had been hanging high above suddenly vanished behind the clouds. A fierce wind swept through as dense, dark clouds rolled in and pressed down upon the town. Thunder tore across the sky, crackling with blinding sparks.
People in the small town hurried home. Everyone knew this storm would not be mild.
Even Jinlong Elementary School, nestled at the corner of the street, had informed parents early to pick up their children. After all, it was the first day of the new term, and with a heavy storm looming, the school feared the students might get caught in something dangerous. As soon as the sky changed, they had the parents come. By now, the campus was completely empty. Even the last security guard had locked the gate and left before the rain arrived.
By the time the downpour came as expected, the scent of rain and earth filled every inch of the small town. The streets were deserted.
Except for one slim figure in white. Shielded by an umbrella, she trudged through the pouring rain. Each step splashed through a puddle as she made her way quickly to a corner of the school’s outer wall.
When she saw that, just as she hoped, there were indeed a few children gathered there, Jiang Ling finally let out a long breath.
“Good. The system glitch didn’t delay anything.”
She was a world-tasker, traveling through different task worlds assigned by the system to fulfill missions and earn achievements. She had already completed ninety-nine missions. With just one more, she could retire with honor, take the system’s billion reward, and settle in any world she liked.
Unfortunately, the moment she arrived in this world, her system malfunctioned due to aging. It could not provide basic mission prompts. All it gave her was a rough idea of the storyline.
This world was originally a tragic romance novel set in an elite household. The female lead was the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy family. After her birth mother died, her rich father sent her to a remote town for school. Because of her delicate looks and graceful air, she became the target of jealousy, especially from a classmate led by a scheming girl who played the role of the villainess. Yet her kind and gentle nature won the heart of the male lead, who had also been exiled to this town.
As they spent time together, the two developed feelings for each other. They became each other’s unforgettable first love. But when disaster struck, it was the female lead who risked her life to save the male lead. However, the villainess stole the credit for this act. The male lead’s parents took their unconscious son and his so-called savior away from the town.
Heartbroken, the female lead remained behind. Years later, she was admitted to the nation’s top university and crossed paths again with the male lead. He had never gotten over her but felt guilty toward his “savior.” The villainess, now arrogant and desperate to keep her stolen credit, tried everything to sabotage the female lead.
And so began a twisted triangle of love, gratitude, guilt, and obsession. A story of “You love me but she won’t let you; I can’t love you anymore, yet you keep coming back.” A melodrama of deep emotions.
Right now, this was the beginning of it all. The first encounter between the female lead and the villainess.
According to the task description, today was the first day of school. The female lead, who had just arrived in town the day before, had not yet received her school uniform. So she wore a white dress to school. Her beauty and distinct appearance stirred jealousy in the villainess.
With school dismissed early due to the storm, the villainess seized the chance to corner the female lead outside the campus. She ripped off her backpack, pulled out the white dress, and put it on herself. Then she threatened the female lead to stay silent. The female lead tried to resist and get the dress back but failed. A passing bystander misunderstood the scene and scolded the female lead, believing her to be the aggressor.
As for Jiang Ling’s role?
She was to play the blind and foolish passerby. When the female lead struggled with the villainess, Jiang Ling was supposed to believe the villainess’s lies, help her snatch the dress, and bully the female lead. This allowed the villainess to win the first round and even become friends with Jiang Ling. She would occasionally help the villainess in bullying the female lead until the tables turned. The female lead would later get her revenge, while the villainess would blame Jiang Ling for everything. That was the end of her.
In short, she was the villainess’s elementary school cheat code and the female lead’s biggest early obstacle.
Only…
Jiang Ling gripped the umbrella handle and stood nearby, glancing between the two girls, troubled.
Which one of them was the female lead? Which one was the villainess?
Both girls had ponytails and wore the school’s white shirt and plaid skirt uniform. One, shorter, stood near the wall. The other, taller, faced her. Each clutched a rain-soaked, mud-stained white dress. They stared each other down.
Their schoolbags were scattered on the ground. It was impossible to tell whose bag the dress had come from.
The system could no longer respond, and all background data had been lost. Jiang Ling did not even know the protagonists’ names. She only knew that the female lead was supposed to be beautiful and delicate.
But even with her perfect 5.0 vision, she could not tell which of these two drenched school chicks looked more delicate or beautiful.
Besides, they were still just children. Who could judge their future potential?
Suddenly, one of the girls noticed her and waved urgently.
“Sister, please help me. This is my dress. My classmate is trying to take it from me.”
The other girl slapped her across the face. “Shut up! It’s mine!”
Jiang Ling’s eyes lit up.
The plot said the female lead was kind and gentle. The villainess was cruel and fierce. That slap made things clear, did it not?
The two girls kept arguing.
“It’s mine!”
“No, it’s mine!”
Jiang Ling made her decision. She stepped forward.
The taller girl on the outside quickly cried out, “Sister, help me! She’s trying to steal my dress!” She was also the one who had slapped just now.
The other one’s eyes were red with frustration. “It’s mine!”
That confirmed it.
The villainess was the one lying. The female lead was the one trying to explain.
Jiang Ling yanked the wet white dress from the shorter girl’s hands and stuffed it into the taller girl’s arms. She scolded with righteous fury.
“You’re lying at such a young age. Is this what your parents taught you? Which class are you in? I’ll report you to your teacher!”
The child froze on the spot.
Her face flushed with embarrassment, flickering with what seemed like both anger and grievance.
Jiang Ling felt more certain. That had to be the female lead. Bullied yet too timid to talk back.
“If I catch you bullying others again, I’ll deal with you myself. Learn some manners while you’re young!”
She patted the taller girl’s shoulder and held the umbrella over her.
“Come on, I’ll walk you home.”
The girl’s slim frame stiffened. She glanced up at Jiang Ling’s face with some hesitation and wariness. After a few seconds, she nodded, picked up her backpack, and followed beside Jiang Ling.
She peeked up again at the sister who had held an umbrella for her, then lowered her head.
In a quiet voice, she said, “Thank you.”
Jiang Ling glanced at her and realized she was genuinely expressing gratitude. Not a hint of guilt. She thought to herself, This little girl has nerves of steel. She stole someone’s things and still feels no shame. No wonder she grows up to torment the female lead so thoroughly.
But the character’s morals were not her concern. Jiang Ling just wanted to complete the mission and retire.
“Do you study at Jinlong Elementary?”
The girl gave a soft “Mm.”
“What’s your name? Which grade are you in? How old are you?”
“Qin Siluan. Fourth grade. I’m ten.”
Her voice remained small and quiet, completely lacking the earlier confidence from slapping someone. Jiang Ling found it strange. But with no detailed character profiles, she could not be sure. At the very least, in the art of slapping, the villainess outclassed the female lead.
“I’m Jiang Ling. I go to Jinlong Middle School, second year. I’m fourteen. Where do you live? I’ll take you home.”
The girl fell silent. Her hands clutched the hem of her uniform.
Jiang Ling turned to look. The girl, just a head shorter than her, lowered her gaze and bit her lip. She clearly did not want to go home.
Usually, villainesses came from tragic homes. That was how their personalities became twisted. So this was understandable.
“Come to my place then. No one’s home. You can take a hot shower.”
The girl’s head shot up. Her eyes sparkled with surprise and shyness. Though she still looked cautious, she softly said, “Thank you.”
This time, her voice was noticeably louder.
…
In this world, Jiang Ling’s identity was that of a girl from a broken home. Her parents had divorced and built new families in big cities. Neither wanted custody. So she lived alone in this small town. Each month, her parents sent her enough money to cover living expenses. Her grandmother from the countryside, out of pity, would occasionally visit.
Jiang Ling understood that this identity had been carefully arranged by the system to prevent her from being exposed.
Still, when she arrived at her residence, she felt somewhat comforted. At least the well-furnished and nicely decorated 90-square-meter apartment showed that her parents had not neglected her materially.
Thankfully, she would not have to work part-time to make ends meet.
She glanced around. The place was a little messy, likely because the NPC maintaining her character had left it untouched, waiting for the cleaner who came every Sunday afternoon.
She opened the shoe cabinet and found only one pair of pink slippers in her size. There was another gray pair, likely for the cleaner.
“If you don’t mind, you can wear these.”
She placed her own slippers before the girl and walked barefoot into the room.
She had a thing about hygiene. She would rather walk barefoot than wear someone else’s shoes.
Little Siluan stood by the door and watched the older sister step barefoot onto the tile floor. She pressed her lips together and slipped her feet into the slippers that were two or three sizes too big. Her cheeks flushed slightly.
