Father Jiang sat in the police station.

When he reported the matter regarding Jiang Tingfeng to the police, their response was that they needed to investigate and verify the evidence.

Holding his tea cup, Father Jiang thought leisurely—

Perhaps once the verification is complete, the case can be closed.

A police officer approached him and said, “Mr. Jiang, hello.” His expression was somewhat nuanced: “We’ve looked into Jiang Tingfeng.”

Father Jiang nodded, a smile forming on his face as he eagerly awaited more information.

The officer pulled out a chair to sit down, organized the documents in his hands, and then frowned as he said, “We found out some other things.”

“Is there a child missing or perhaps lost in your family?” The officer paused and added, “Around seventeen years ago?”

Father Jiang’s smile vanished.

He couldn’t help but lean forward, pressing for details, “What did you say?”

The officer raised his hand slightly in a gesture to pause, then repeated, “Seventeen years ago, did your family or someone you know have a child that went missing?”

Father Jiang remained silent for a moment.

He looked down at his tea cup for a while before slowly responding, “We did have a loss.”

He added, “Seventeen years ago, we reported it to the police; you can check the records.”

Back then, the police didn’t operate on computers; most cases were documented on paper. However, luckily, the Jing City police station hadn’t changed much over the years, and the records were mostly intact.

“Understood.” The officer nodded, “We’ll go check the records shortly.”

He closed his notebook and then elaborated, “Some things were left behind at the suspect’s home.”

These were stored on a disk, kept among a pile of old items. Initially, they hadn’t paid attention to this item, thinking it was just Jiang Tingfeng’s personal hobby—

After all, some people truly enjoyed collecting old artifacts.

It wasn’t until an officer joked, “Do you think this thing can still be used now?” that they started to take it seriously.

This was Jaz’s disk, containing mostly data from over a decade ago. But as long as it’s properly maintained, a disk might still function after many years.

They had an epiphany and managed to borrow an old computer to read the disk, from which they discovered a folder.

Inside the folder was a video file and a conversation log.

The video was quite blurry, but it was vaguely discernible that it took place abroad, showing a small boy lying on the ground, blood seeping from the back of his head.

There were also two lines of dialogue: “He must be dead, right? Should we hit him a couple more times?”

“Just one more—”

“Someone’s coming, let’s go; he definitely won’t survive.”

The video ended there.

As for the chat log, it seemed more like a supplement to the video.

It was a conversation record.

More accurately, it was an inquiry about how an adult could smuggle a child abroad. The police officer explained, “He may have planned a trafficking or kidnapping case—”

There was a hint of hesitation in his voice.

With the current evidence, it was actually difficult to define what Jiang Tingfeng had really done. In fact, even in the beating video, Jiang Tingfeng didn’t truly appear.

These two documents couldn’t convict Jiang Tingfeng, and the police officer said, “We will continue to follow up on this case.”

He hesitated for a moment before adding, “However, since so much time has passed, there probably won’t be much outcome.”

.

Father Jiang didn’t remember how he walked out of the police station.

The driver had been waiting outside the station, and upon seeing him emerge, he eagerly got out of the car to open the back door for him.

Father Jiang didn’t get in.

He extended his hand, “Do you have a cigarette?”

He had started smoking when Pei Wang went missing, smoking heavily—almost a pack a day.

Later, when they adopted Jiang Shu, Song Shiyu told him that he should quit smoking since there were small children at home.

So, he quit smoking.

Out of concern for his son, he didn’t even carry cigarettes with him.

The driver indeed had cigarettes.

He fished out a cigarette case from his pocket and awkwardly handed it over, saying, “The cigarettes aren’t very good.”

Jiang Tingyuan didn’t mind; he took one: “Light it.”

The driver then searched for a lighter and helped Jiang Tingyuan ignite the cigarette. Jiang Tingyuan held it, but didn’t actually smoke; he just stared at the smoke for a long while before slowly walking over to the trash bin to extinguish the butt and toss it inside.

He took out his phone and dialed Pei Wang’s number.

Pei Wang was evidently busy; it rang several times before being answered. His voice was slightly low: “Dad.”

Jiang Tingyuan replied with a “Hmm.”

“I’m in a meeting.” Pei Wang paused, “What’s wrong?”

Jiang Tingyuan knew he should hang up, but sometimes emotions overshadow reason.

So he continued, “I just went to the police station.”

“I’m sorry,” Jiang Tingyuan said softly, “I’m sorry, Xiao Wang—”

He heard a bit of rustling noise in the earpiece, then Pei Wang said, “The meeting is paused for now.”

Pei Wang glanced at the time: “We’ll resume in half an hour.”

He exited the conference room, quickly entered his own office, closed the door, and then said, “Dad?”

With this exchange, Father Jiang finally calmed down; he told Pei Wang what he had heard at the police station, lamenting, “Why didn’t I think more about it then?”

“It’s not your fault,” Pei Wang comforted Father Jiang, “Don’t blame yourself for someone else’s mistakes.”

Pei Wang thought for a moment, then changed the topic: “Is the evidence enough to convict Jiang Tingfeng?”

Father Jiang sighed, “Not enough. There are no witnesses, and the video evidence isn’t direct enough—”

“Ding!”

The system notification sound suddenly rang out, completely overpowering Father Jiang’s voice. Pei Wang was taken aback for a moment, then raised his hand to bring up the system screen.

Displayed prominently on the screen was the latest system task.

“[Detected malicious male supporting character Jiang Tingfeng’s actions, please host find evidence as soon as possible to assist the police in the case, and slap the malicious male character’s face.]

“[Task reward: two hundred points.]”

Since his points had reached eight hundred, the system hadn’t issued any tasks.

Father Jiang hadn’t heard Pei Wang’s reply and, feeling puzzled, said, “Xiao Wang?””Pei Wang?”

Pei Wang came back to his senses: “I’m here.”

He said softly, “I will look into this matter.”
