The Fake Daughter Want to Be Villainess - Chapter 56
Jiang Shu pulled her hand away from Pei Wang. “It’s too hot.”
She brought her fingers together and fanned herself a few times, then looked around before moving to the eaves.
Wiping the sweat from her forehead with a piece of tissue, Jiang Shu waved to Pei Wang. “It’s not so sunny over here.”
The eaves of rural houses aren’t very large, and the buildings aren’t tall, so the shade is limited.
However, Pei Wang came over, stopping beside Jiang Shu and slightly lowering his head.
Jiang Shu was taken aback. “What are you doing?”
Following Pei Wang’s gaze, she noticed the tissue in her palm and suddenly understood. “You want the tissue?”
Jiang Shu took a packet of tissues from her pocket, pulled out a fresh one, and handed it to Pei Wang. “Here.”
Pei Wang’s expression revealed a hint of resignation.
He reached out to take the tissue, but as soon as his fingertips grazed it, Jiang Shu swiftly pulled her hand back.
She smiled with a touch of pride.
Holding the tissue, Jiang Shu raised her hand to wipe the sweat from Pei Wang’s forehead. “I figured it out.”
She balled up the used tissue, looked around for a trash can but didn’t see one, so she held onto it instead. “How far is our place?”
Pei Wang took the tissue ball from her hand. “Not far now.”
He led Jiang Shu forward, passing by two small buildings before stopping in front of a small courtyard.
The courtyard wasn’t big; inside were a few bungalows, and in front of the house, there was a small vine of grapes, with a large yellow dog tied up at the entrance.
Pei Wang compared the description on the card and then turned to Jiang Shu. “This is the one.”
He raised his hand, preparing to knock on the door when Jiang Shu grabbed his wrist. “Wait, wait.”
She quietly ducked behind Pei Wang, sheltering herself behind the courtyard wall to ensure she couldn’t see the yellow dog. Only then did she say, “You knock.”
Pei Wang turned back. “Are you afraid of dogs?”
He lightly covered Jiang Shu’s ears with his hand. “It will bark when you knock.”
Seeing Jiang Shu take another half step back, he smiled softly before turning back and gently knocking on the small iron gate of the courtyard.
The sleeping yellow dog suddenly woke up, ran to the door, and started barking loudly.
Jiang Shu instantly covered her ears.
After barking several times, a person slowly walked out of the house, squinting as they asked, “Wang Cai, who’s there?”
The person reached the courtyard gate and, after making eye contact with Pei Wang for a moment, suddenly clapped her arm, realizing, “Oh, you’re here to stay, right?”
She patted the yellow dog’s head, opened the door, and her face crinkled with folds. “I thought you wouldn’t arrive until this evening.”
The dog stopped barking, and Pei Wang offered a polite smile. “We came a bit early; sorry for the trouble.”
The elderly woman seemed a bit embarrassed. “Why so polite?”
She stepped back while holding onto the dog. “Come in.”
Pei Wang turned to Jiang Shu.
Jiang Shu blinked, lowering her hands from her ears. She hesitantly glanced into the courtyard and then pushed past Pei Wang, stepping forward. “No need to hold my hand.”
She saw the elderly woman in the courtyard and was about to greet her when the yellow dog suddenly barked again, wagging its tail as it stepped forward—
Pei Wang stepped in front of her, blocking the excited dog. “Sorry, my sister is a bit afraid of dogs.”
Looking apologetically at the elderly woman, he asked, “Could you please pull the dog a bit aside?”
He spoke softly, his tone gentle, and instinctively, the elderly woman complied, moving the dog aside. “Is this okay?”
The dog was pulled away, now resting by the edge of the field, sniffing around, its tail wagging like a propeller.
With a safe distance secured, Pei Wang turned back and extended his hand to Jiang Shu.
Jiang Shu grabbed his hand tightly, leaning against him. “Can we go in now?”
She poked her head out from behind Pei Wang, cautiously peering ahead before gently pushing him. “You go first.”
Pei Wang stepped inside first, and Jiang Shu closely followed. As she took a small step forward, the yellow dog lifted its head. “Woof!”
Jiang Shu instinctively curled her fingers.
The elderly woman tightened her grip on the leash and called out, “Wang Cai.” Then she turned to Jiang Shu, smiling. “It really likes you; barking at you is just its way of saying hello.”
That affection felt rather heavy.
Jiang Shu managed a smile and greeted the yellow dog from a distance. “Hello there.”
Then she quickly pushed Pei Wang. “Brother—”
Pei Wang pulled her into the courtyard.
The elderly woman secured the dog back at the door. “Let me take you to your room.”
She turned and walked towards the house on the right. “Right here.”
In the courtyard, there were three separate bungalow buildings, with the middle one being larger and appearing to have three rooms. The building on the left was very close to the middle one and looked like a kitchen.
The elderly woman led them to a small house that was independent, set a little further from the middle one.
She opened the door. The room was not large; opposite the door was an old wooden cabinet, somewhat dark and dull. Next to the cabinet was a double bed, and beside the bed was a round table with a plastic bag filled with various items on it.
The elderly woman entered the room, saying, “This room belonged to my granddaughter. She has gone to college now, so it’s unoccupied for the time being.”
Perhaps worried that Pei Wang and Jiang Shu would dislike it, she added, “I’ve changed the bedcovers to clean ones.”
The elderly woman patted the summer quilt on the bed. “Sleep assured!”
It wasn’t about the bedding.
Jiang Shu frowned and gently tugged at Pei Wang’s sleeve. Pei Wang obediently lowered his head. “What’s wrong?”
Just as Jiang Shu was about to speak, the elderly woman spoke up again. “This bag has some daily necessities that your program team prepared. I don’t know what’s in there, though.”
The elderly woman pointed to the plastic bag on the round table and then turned her head. “I live over there.”
She indicated the middle house. “If you need anything, you can come find me.”
She handed them the key to the room and then left, returning to her own room.
Jiang Shu raised her hand to close the door and quickly walked over to the bedside.
Finally, she had the chance to express the biggest issue with this room.
“Pei Wang,” Jiang Shu said, fixing her expression and looking serious, “there’s only one bed here.”
