Mother Jiang began to doubt if she had misheard: “What extra lessons?”

She was confused, saying, “Shu Shu is already a freshman and Xiao Wang has graduated.”

Father Jiang displayed a document on his phone: “This is a variety show I’m preparing to invest in; I just received the contract.”

Mother Jiang frowned and pushed the phone away with distaste: “I’m not interested in your work.”

Father Jiang persistently handed the phone back to her: “It’s not work; just take a look at this variety show.” He found the name of the show and enlarged it: “I want them both to participate.”

Mother Jiang looked at him doubtfully: “A variety show?”

She took the phone and glanced apathetically at the show’s name, but then straightened up, her expression turning serious.

She opened the document to see that it was filled with investment distribution details. She closed the file and quickly searched for the program online.

Then, holding her phone, she turned back to Father Jiang: “Ask the director if he can fit both of them into the program.”

There’s nothing that money can’t solve; if there is, it’s probably just that the offered amount isn’t enough.

Enticed by the prospect of additional investment, the director readily agreed to the request.

Of course, he’d weigh the option of a little extra investment against potentially losing a key investor.

Father Jiang turned to Mother Jiang and gave her an “OK” sign before hanging up: “It’s done.”

Mother Jiang still frowned: “What about Shu Shu and Xiao Wang? How are we going to get them to participate?”

Father Jiang chuckled: “Isn’t that simple?”

After leaving the Jiang family home, Pei Wang didn’t go home; instead, he drove to a nearby private hospital and registered for a mental health consultation.

At this hour, there was only one young doctor available.

The doctor, whose last name was Wang, was casually dressed in a white coat, with a bottle of opened cola sitting on the desk. He waved Pei Wang over: “Have a seat.”

He organized the documents in front of him and asked, “What’s the matter?”

Pei Wang hesitated for a moment and then shook his head: “Sorry.”

He vaguely felt that the system wasn’t something he should disclose, and compared to the notion that it was a figment of his imagination, he leaned more towards it being something that resided in his mind.

Pei Wang grasped the doorknob, intending to leave.

But the doctor called out to him: “Wait.” He handed over his phone, showing Pei Wang the dull-colored QR code: “I can’t just earn your registration fee for nothing.”

The registration fee for mental health was the most expensive in the hospital, costing a hefty 400 yuan.

The young doctor raised a finger: “You can consult me once for free via WeChat.”

He had seen many patients like this before—those who recognized they had a problem but, upon gathering the courage to come in, got cold feet and tried to leave. However, patients who made it here couldn’t be spurred on unreasonably.

The doctor shook his phone again, urging: “Hurry up; my time is valuable.”

Pei Wang’s time was valuable too. He frowned slightly, offered no explanation, scanned the QR code to add the doctor as a friend, then casually moved him to the blocked section.

He nodded lightly at the doctor and then turned to head to the neurology department.

There were clearly more people in the neurology department. Pei Wang took the expedited route and had a brain CT done.

His brain appeared to be very healthy.

Things cannot exist without a carrier; that system either blocked the hospital’s scans or was bound to his brain.Pei Wang stood in the hospital corridor, looking at the CT scan repeatedly before placing it into the shredder in the hallway.

His foster mother was hospitalized here, and he couldn’t bring the CT scan to her, as it might worry her.

The shredder’s indicator light lit up, and Pei Wang left the main building of the hospital. He first stopped by a flower shop to buy a bouquet of carnations and then queued at a popular bubble tea store to get a trendy drink before finally heading to the inpatient area with these two items in hand.

When Pei Wang arrived at the hospital room, his foster mother was sitting on the edge of the bed in her hospital gown, her fingertips tapping rhythmically on the bedside table.

She looked very thin, and even the smallest size of the hospital gown hung loosely on her. She was also pale—an unhealthy kind of pale—making her dark hair appear even more prominent, like a pool of deep ink.

She seemed very focused, so Pei Wang remained silent, standing quietly next to her and holding the items until Pei Songyu finished her rhythm and turned to see him.

“Pei Wang?” A hint of surprise crossed her face as she walked over to receive the painting and the bubble tea. “These two are for me, right?”

Pei Songyu unwrapped the flowers, took a spin around the room, then set a small plastic bucket on the windowsill and arranged the fresh flowers in it.

Then she settled back in front of her bed with the bubble tea, poked the straw in but didn’t drink it; instead, she looked up and asked with a smile, “How did it feel today?”

Pei Wang pondered for a moment, saying, “They were very kind.”

Pei Songyu’s eyelashes fluttered deeper with a slight smile. Leaning against the wall, she shook her head. “You find everyone kind.”

She took a sip from the bubble tea, thought for a while, and then asked, “What about that little girl? How was she?”

Pei Wang fell silent for a rare moment, organizing his thoughts. “She’s very lively.”

Pei Songyu’s expression seemed less than satisfied, prompting Pei Wang to recall the little girl from the Jiang family—

“Ding, the Vicious Supporting Female Character’s scheme has been exposed; the current slap-in-the-face task has been completed, earning ten reward points.”

The low-volume synthetic voice chimed again, like a buzzing mosquito, and Pei Wang instinctively furrowed his brows.

He had grown accustomed to the occasional notifications from the system, but now it had inexplicably informed him that a task was completed, which worried him about whether the system was malfunctioning.

The system was bound to him; if it broke down, would it affect his thoughts?

Pei Songyu furrowed her brows as well. After glancing at Pei Wang’s expression several times, she grasped his wrist. “Do you not like that little girl?”

Pei Wang snapped back to reality. “I don’t.”

Pei Songyu didn’t press further. She stroked the warm bubble tea in her hands and looked up. “Let’s not mention that.”

“Have I told you about Uncle Li?” she asked softly. “He visited me recently, saying he needed a guest for his variety show and wanted to invite me.”

She lowered her head, fiddling with the straw. “I owe him a favor, so it wouldn’t be polite to refuse. But—”

Pei Songyu seemed troubled. “My current situation isn’t suitable.”

She looked up at Pei Wang.

Pei Wang also sat down by the bed. “Do you want me to go in your place?” He turned his head to look at her. “We differ quite a bit.”

Pei Songyu was a cellist and a renowned musician, while he was just a businessman.

Pei Songyu smiled. “That’s fine; he just wants someone good-looking.”

“And the filming isn’t very busy; it only occurs on weekends.”

“So, can Xiao Wang promise your mother to do this?” She placed the bubble tea on the nearby rack and made a pleading gesture. “Mom hasn’t asked Xiao Wang for any favors before.”

Pei Wang lowered his head, studying her for a moment before relaxing his brows and nodding. “Alright.”

Pei Songyu’s demeanor softened, and she chatted with Pei Wang for a couple more minutes before pulling up the blanket and urging him, “I want to rest now.”

Pei Wang replied and gave a few instructions to the caregiver beside her before leaving the room.

After Pei Wang left, Pei Songyu waited a moment to ensure he was gone before lifting the blanket again, taking out her phone and messaging Jiang Tingyuan.

【Xiao Wang agreed.】

She stared at the message for quite a while until the caregiver reminded her, “Your bubble tea is getting cold.”

Pei Songyu snapped back to reality, lifted her hand to feel the bubble tea, took it into her hands, and bent down to take a sip.

Her lymphoma had already invaded her taste nerves, and she could no longer taste anything. She hasn’t told Xiao Wang about this yet.

Pei Wang sat in the car.

His hand rested on the steering wheel, the engine was on, but he didn’t start driving immediately.

He was still thinking about the variety show that Pei Songyu mentioned to him.

Pei Songyu was in the music industry and had spent more than a decade abroad; how could she possibly know anyone in the domestic entertainment circle or owe someone a favor?

She just wanted him to participate in the show.

Lately, she had been concerned about his biological parents and always worried that his relationship with Jiang Shu, the girl from the Jiang family, wasn’t good.

Pei Wang raised his hand and rubbed his forehead.

Was that variety show also involving Jiang Shu?

The author has something to say:

Pei Songyu concealed the matter of her cancer, so Pei Wang doesn’t know for now.
