Pei Wang answered the voice call from Jiang Shu.

As soon as the call connected, Jiang Shu’s voice came through: “I’ve turned on the light.”

Cozy under the blankets, she had tightly tucked the edges of her duvet all around, curling up inside.

The light was indeed enough to disperse most of her fear, but—

Jiang Shu whispered, “But there’s a vanity mirror in the room.”

There had been a mirror demon in the horror game she played today.

Pei Wang rubbed the button of the hairdryer with his fingertips, then set it down on the table, reminding her: “You can cover that mirror with something.”

There was a moment of silence on the other end, and he could only hear her soft breathing.

Jiang Shu thought Pei Wang had offered a good suggestion, but she was too scared to act on it.

After a long moment of mental preparation, she grasped the blanket and peered out from under the covers.

Taking a deep breath, Jiang Shu suddenly threw off the blanket, dashed into the cloakroom, and grabbed a coat from the rack, placing it over the mirror.

Pei Wang only heard a clattering noise, and then the little girl let out a deep sigh of relief, cheerfully saying, “Okay.”

Jiang Shu climbed back into bed, wrapping herself up in the blanket again. Lying straight on the bed, she held the phone to her ear and softly called out to Pei Wang: “Brother.”

Pei Wang answered gently, “I’m here.”

Jiang Shu updated him on her situation: “The light is still on, and the mirror is covered, so I’m not too scared, but—”

She stretched out her words: “I can’t sleep with the light on.”

Pei Wang chuckled.

He stood up and walked over to the bookshelf, searching for the book he needed while softly saying, “Then turn off the light.”

Pei Wang reassured her: “Don’t be afraid; I’ll keep talking to you.”

He found the book he needed, pulled it from the shelf, and asked, “Do you want to hear me read?”

Jiang Shu blinked. She hesitated for a moment, then commanded the smart assistant to turn off the lights, and wrapped herself in the blankets again, replying, “I want to listen.”

She waited with some anticipation.

Pei Wang’s voice soon filled the air; his tone was warm, like jade clinking together, with a hint of clarity.

His voice was pleasant to hear, but the content being read felt oddly familiar.

Jiang Shu pressed her ear against the phone, listening carefully for a while, until she finally confirmed she wasn’t mistaken.

It was “Introduction to the Basic Principles of Marxism.”

Very good, quite materialistic.

Jiang Shu peacefully closed her eyes.

Pei Wang hadn’t read for long; he hadn’t even finished the first page of the text when he heard steady breathing from the other end.

He smiled and placed the book back on the shelf.

The voice call was still ongoing, and Pei Wang bent down, lightly tapping the phone screen with his fingertip: “Good night.”Pei Wang was awakened by the alarm clock.

Since there was progress in the negotiations with Lin Yuan, he had to go to the company first to handle related matters for the entire morning, and he didn’t have time to visit the hospital until noon.

When Pei Wang arrived at the hospital, Pei Songyu was awake.

Perhaps due to her illness, her sleep quality wasn’t good; she largely relied on painkillers to fall asleep.

Pei Songyu had her hair down and a tablet in front of her. She was bowing her head, intently watching the screen.

The colors on the screen were vibrant, clearly showing that she was watching some video.

Pei Wang walked over and placed the roses he was holding on the bedside table, casually asking, “What are you watching?”

Pei Songyu paused the video and turned her head to Pei Wang. Then she elongated her voice, saying leisurely, “Your variety show.”

She added specifically, “It’s the advanced version sent by Jiang Tingyuan this week.”

Pei Wang frowned slightly.

Pei Songyu patted her hair, glanced at the bouquet of roses, and complimented, “Very beautiful flowers.”

Pei Songyu reached out to touch the roses, then raised her eyebrows and revealed a mischievous smile, “Are these flowers for me, or are you taking them to the Jiang Family later?”

Pei Wang called out to her helplessly, “Mom.”

He sat down at the edge of the bed, adjusted the bouquet of roses, and placed it upright on the bedside table, saying, “Naturally, they are your flowers.”

Pei Songyu did not argue, “Oh really?”

She tapped the screen again, and the video started playing automatically.

The video paused perfectly at the moment when Pei Wang leaned down to steal a kiss on Jiang Shu’s forehead.

Pei Songyu paused the video again and turned to Pei Wang, calling out to him, “Xiao Wang.”

Having raised Pei Wang for more than ten years, she knew him like the back of her hand.

Pei Wang was someone with a strong sense of propriety and didn’t like close physical contact with others. Most of his gentlemanly actions were rooted in politeness and upbringing.

In the last episode of the variety show, Pei Wang was indeed like that—polite, gentle, and maintaining a certain distance in their interactions.

But from the first hug in this episode, his attitude showed subtle changes as he intentionally shortened the distance between himself and Jiang Shu.

When Jiang Tingyuan sent her this new video, he sighed about how the variety show had an effect, noting that the relationship between the two kids was getting really good.

However, she spotted the clues almost immediately.

Pei Wang was boiling the frog in warm water; he was even using some minor tactics.

This was hardly the deep sibling love.

Pei Songyu tentatively reminded him, “The online commenters are shipping your sibling relationship.”

Pei Wang understood her hint and explained, “Jiang Shu was adopted by Father Jiang and Mother Jiang; we don’t have a blood relationship.”

This was information that the System accidentally revealed to him when it bound him.Pei Songyu let out a sigh of relief.

She touched the silicone rabbit on the tablet cover and said, “You’re pursuing Jiang Shu.”

Pei Songyu used a tone of affirmation, then she frowned and looked worriedly at Pei Wang, “Do Father Jiang and Mother Jiang know about this?”

Pei Wang shook his head, “They don’t know.”

He laughed, “Do you have to inform both parents when you’re pursuing someone?”

Pei Songyu smiled as well, “Isn’t your situation a bit special?”

She waved her hand, “Whether to tell or not, that’s up to you to consider.”

Pei Songyu was more concerned about something else, “The Jiang Family has never mentioned outside that Jiang Shu is an adopted daughter.”

“Does Jiang Shu know that you and she don’t share a blood relationship?” she asked with a complex expression, “You wouldn’t be the only one getting invested while she thinks you’re still close as siblings, would you?”
